charity shop wardobe

It occurred to me this evening whilst doing the ironing (wild sat night and all that) that almost my entire wardrobe is from a charity shop... not a bad thing at all but am amazed at how much good stuff I've picked up. Latest haul has been a jojo maternity top £3.99 - I'm 8 months pregnant, plus a fat face blouse £1, leather saddle bag £4, grey wool Boden peacoat £10.. it's got to the stage where I really can't bring myself to pay full price for clothes anymore & balk at the prices of new clothes. Anyone else feel the same? Or have I become a bit of a scruffy cheapskate?!

Almost everything I own comes from charity shops!

StewedFruit · 12/09/2015 20:37

My h&m maternity jeans were £1, and I picked up a warehouse 100% cashmere cardi for £4 not long ago. Amazes me what people get rid of..

Same here, I have barely anything new. However, I am finding I have to be a bit more discerning now, I had lots of nice things but no outfits as such.. I've just taken three massive bags of clothes back to the charity shop! Oh well I guess I'm keeping my local ones going!

Ludways · 12/09/2015 20:39

I'm a second hand rose and I'm often complimented on my clothes.

Blodss · 12/09/2015 20:41

I love second hand clothes but get mine from ebay.

SometimesItRains · 12/09/2015 20:44

Look up Knickers Models Own on Facebook. She's raising funds for cancer research by wearing a different charity shop outfit every day. Some of the outfits she puts together look amazing.

blibblobblub · 12/09/2015 20:45

I just can't be arsed with charity shops. The ones round here are just full of Primark/other overpriced cheap crap...or just ugly clothes!

confusedandemployed · 12/09/2015 20:49

I did have loads but I too have found the quality's dropped off recently. That said I have some fab bits, Monsoon skirt £3, White Stuff corduroy skirt £3, Boden linen dress £10... I still look out for stuff but am finding less and less these these days.

StewedFruit · 12/09/2015 20:50

Think I'm lucky where I live, lots of good stuff gets donated. Got a charity furniture warehouse too which is amazing! Will take a look at that blog..

I live abroad but had a ganders when I was back home in the summer - I was staggered at the high prices for women's clothes. Anything (even if really scruffy) that had a label such as Hobbs, Boden etc was ridiculously over-priced.

Over the years, have had some great buys though. My sister is a regular charity shop shopper and she gets some brilliant things.

StewedFruit · 12/09/2015 21:18

Yes some shops overprice, e.g. white stuff dresses at £15 which I'd never pay, but I've also discovered several shops that sell all clothes for £1. They must surely make more money for the charity.

The charity shops here are crap but I buy a lot on eBay and have got some great bargains. Most recently a Boden velvet shift dress for £7 and a Next dress for £4.

ChristineDePisan · 12/09/2015 21:36

I've never found great things in charity shops Sad I'm a whizz at hunting out TK Maxx bargains, but haven't got the knack of charity shops

Sunnyshine · 12/09/2015 21:39

Was having this conversation today with a friend. I cannot remember the last time I bought anything except bras, knickers and pjs in a "normal" shop!!

squoosh · 12/09/2015 21:52

I love a charity shop rummage. They key is to find a decent shop that isn't trying to sell second hand Primark clothes for more than they cost new in Primark.

Sounds like my wardrobe. Fine in my opinion. I like the eclectic mix and the fact I don't look like I've walked out of Next like the other girls at work.

Lurleene · 12/09/2015 22:09

I bought a striped tunic yesterday for £3.99 in brand new condition. It was made by a brand I'd never heard of, - I just googled it and the tunic was originally £55 Grin.

I've started going round charity shops regularly in the last 6 months and have found some good stuff. Although I don't really buy clothes from there, I get my son's clothes in charity shops sometimes as kids clothes are stupidly priced for how long they last until they grow out of them! I did buy a nice laced jumper for about £2 and a cardi for about the same price... Brand new they would have likely been around £15 each. But I also got my son a Cars backpack for £1.95 when I saw it for about £10 new. Amazing! I guess where I live people tend to stick their noses up at things they've had for more than 2 years or so. Very quick to throw away their money here! Wink
I've also got some nice ornaments and other things that I just wouldn't have paid the shop price for at all! Love it.

Greengardenpixie · 12/09/2015 22:51

I very rarely find anything i like in the ones round here. If i were to go into town though, there is plenty. Most of the charity shops i have round here with the exception of one, its old lady style or tee's that have lost their shape, jumpers that are similar or odd coloured clothes.

SolidGoldBrass · 12/09/2015 23:02

I've always loved charity shops. For one thing, you don't end up wearing the same clothes as all the unimaginative high-street shoppers. I got a gorgeous vintage dress to wear to my brother's wedding for £2.99 a few years ago, and pretty much my entire work wardrobe comes from charity shops (I need boring, unobtrusive clothes for work and see no reason to spend more than a couple of quid on anything: I have Berketex, M&S and Next trousers and BHS shirts, and a couple of Bon Marche tops my mum bought me which basically covers the lot.)

MyBoysAreFab · 12/09/2015 23:12

I love buying from charity shops ever since i was a student. I'm much more selective now, but it's amazing what you pick up.

I was fancying a dark brushed cotton checked shirt to wear with skinnies and brogues - I got a perfect dark green and navy one today in the charity shop for £3..
