Does anyone else have odd quirks that dictate how they dress?

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 12/09/2015 11:17

Sometimes I think I'd like to change how I dress, but it seems like dumb things hold me back. For example:

Shoes. I have to wear comfortable shoes. I don't like sandals, can't walk in stilettos, etc. Many shoes that look comfortable, like Converse, actually hurt my toes if I wear them and walk in them too long. I'm happy that running shoes have been trendy, although I'm sure that's getting old.

I don't like my legs bare. I can't stand being sockless. I like to wear opaque tights (so happy it's autumn again!)

I don't like my waist and hips constrained. I like how skinny jeans look, but sitting in jeans or tailored trousers on a train journey would make my lower back hurt. I don't like waistbands touching my navel, either. I prefer to have tights pulled up halfway between my hips and armpits!

I don't like to iron and own almost nothing woven. No little cotton button blouses for me!

Patterns and matching colours can intimidate me. I do like big bold bright things, sometimes. I admit I think some of those Boden tunics are adorable. I'm especially wary of anything necessitating new shoes. I stick to black shoes and fear the can of worms that a navy dress opens.

Basically, I wear tons of jersey. Right now I'm wearing a light long jumper under a long cardigan (waterfall I think they're called?) On the bottom I'm wearing a tight jersey miniskirt (the kind sold for a fiver at Primark) over opaque tights and blacl/grey trainers. Everything is charcoal or black with a colourful scarf and some pink in my trainers

I would be happy to live in tights and tunics.

Is this a rut or knowing what works for me?

I could have written that post except for the bits where you don't like having to get new shoes (never been a problem for me!) and wearing trainers with skirts. Everything else though is the same for me. I LOVE Autumn and being able to wear opaque a and boots again (not yet though, still a bit too warm). But the have to be comfortable boots now. Gone are the days when I used to totter around in high heeled boots. Now it's flats all the way although I haven't ventured into Ecco or Gabor territory yet! Also I tend to wear lots of tan accessories (bags and boots) cos it goes with nearly everything!

desperatehousewife2 · 12/09/2015 13:17

In answer to your question, why change a good thing! If it works for you keep doing it! If you're not comfortable you're not happy

desperatehousewife2 · 12/09/2015 13:18

Oh also, waterfall cardigans look terrible on me but they can work in other people. I'll stop replying now!

burnishedsilver · 12/09/2015 13:50

I have a friend with mild sensory issues who has all the same complaints.

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 12/09/2015 16:00

After I posted this thread I Googled "wear the same thing every day."

And I've decided that I'm going to wear tunics and tights every day. Or pretty close to that. I don't care what other people think. I'm not going to try and buy things outside my comfort zone any more.

moab · 12/09/2015 16:05

I wear the same thing as you every day. I've often thought about changing, but I'd rather be comfy !

steppemum · 12/09/2015 16:06

It sounds like a lot of your quirks are comfort related. If you did want to change something, you could add colour?

Spidertracker · 12/09/2015 16:09

I don't know what to wear full stop.
Because my mum dresses very young so everything I put on looks too granny for me or I like it and think it is right then see teenage girls wearing it on the way to non uniform day at school.
I am 32, I have struggled to find clothes since I was 25.

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 12/09/2015 16:46

I already do colour, although usually in the scarf. But I'm happy to wear a colourful tunic or jumper. It just all has to coordinate with black and grey. So one bright thing.

I wear boots and have to use leg warmers to fill in the tops because my calves are skinny. I like to wear bright red ones with a black and grey outfit.

Tailoring matters less when everything is jersey, so I can wear a lot of Primark stuff and look perfectly fine..

OP posts:
MuttonDressedAsGoose · 12/09/2015 16:47

I just need to accept that this is how I like to dress and stop looking at stuff that isn't really along those lines. I've got so much stuff I'll never wear!

Spidertracker I think the thing to do is first figure out what colours suit you. Then figure out what silhouette works for you. Find a couple of basic things that you like and feel comfortable in. Figure out what elements of them you like. Find variations on that.

I am short but need comfortable shoes or I end up in a lot of pain, so end up wearing a lot of wedges and boots with block heels. this time of year when i can't wear my wedge sandals and it's not really time for boots yet is really difficult for me. This massively affects what I wear as it pretty much always needs to go with boots.

Dowser · 12/09/2015 17:45

How does your mum dress spider tracker and how old is she if you don't mind me asking?

Dowser · 12/09/2015 17:47

I love colour but often fall back onto black opaque tights and boots in the autumn winter.

I'm going to sort my autumn / winter wardrobe out. Some of my stuff looks really old fashioned compared tomy summer wardrobe .

PennyPants · 12/09/2015 17:53

I won't wear any patterns or too much colour.

velourvoyageur · 12/09/2015 19:20

I don't really wear any colour except navy, or at a stretch dark green! I won't wear full black (reminds me of my faux-goth teen days) but a typical outfit is grey, dark grey and black. No stripes or patterns. Maybe a colour in nailpolish like a plum purple. Very sober.

I've done my autumn shopping: four LBDs, grey skinnies, black ripped skinnies, basic white and black tank tops, black desert boots. Maybe I'll have sorted myself out by the time I'm in my 30s?

amazonqueen · 12/09/2015 19:43

I look better in V necked clothes but cant wear anything cut too low as I have had a radical mastectomy 6 years ago and not had a reconstruction .I wear a prosthesis but its not perfect and the deep indent is still visible if I lean forward. Plus the false breast inches up and can be seen . So all of my tops have to be unflattering high round or crew necks for safety.

Also connected with the mastectomy ,I have what is called a dogs ear which is a fatty lump under my arm. This makes tighter clothes pull in a weird way and make me look even fatter than I already am.

I dont wear dresses much because of my cankles and fat arse. Any that I do wear are non lycra and in plain colours so I can blend into the background.

I have to wear comfortable shoes because my feet swell and my toes really hurt after a while wearing 'normal' shoes. I have had to resort to Hotter .

My heart belongs to sweetheart necklined ,short swingy dresses and patent leather stiletto shoes.

BlueEyedWonder · 12/09/2015 20:36

I don't do any pattern except stripes or spots.
I don't do colour except khaki, olive or bottle green or maybe teal.
I refuse to buy anything that says dry clean only.

I still manage to have more clothes than I need though!!
I don't like anything too fussy or frilly.
I don't like acrylic knitwear.

Judydreamsofhorses · 12/09/2015 20:49

I'm not sure it's to do with quirks, but I have a kind of "uniform". I really enjoyed this blog post earlier in the year, and have tried to shop with my own "style concept" in mind.

www.littlemisskaty.co.uk/2015/02/style-concept-wardrobe-spring.html

So mine is pretty much:

Skinny, high-waisted jeans
Blouses or tops that end at my waistband or just below, otherwise I look really hippy
Stripes
Leopard print
Slightly boxy jumpers
V-neck cardigans
Dresses that fall just above my knee - mainly striped
Chelsea boots
Brogues
Opaque tights - sometimes in dark colours other than black, eg, purple, dark wine, bottle green

I don't do any sort of small or "ditsy" floral print, and I hate anything in pink shades. My wardrobe has a lot of black, navy and mustard in it.

GrannyAch1ng · 12/09/2015 20:54

Are we just talking personality quirks or physical? I'm three sizes bigger on the top than the bottom, have prop forward's shoulders, 5ft 5 tall, size 8 feet (probably an evolutionary benefit designed to prevent me falling flat on my face from the weight of my bust) and no waist.

I don't wear skirts because I can't find any that sit right and tights are uncomfortable, this annoys me a lot because my lower legs are quite decent, big and muscular, but shapely.

On the personality side, I like to fade into the background, especially in unfamiliar places, so wear far too much black and navy and have only just accepted that people won't point and laugh if I wear something feminine.

mayum1 · 12/09/2015 22:31

I usually dress in phases.

Last Winter, it was jeans, Uniqlo ultralight down vest, fleece heattech, and Adidas trainers for me, +/1 beanie. Winter 2014, it was Dr Martens phase.

Summer was plain black top and twill or denim shorts with sandals.

There was one time years ago when for several months I was always in a dress and cardigan.

Now I am in a jeans, long-sleeved shirt, and Nike Air Max phase.

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 13/09/2015 13:51

I think I do phases, too.

But I'm going to work on some version of a capsule wardrobe of the things I like and just stick with it.

I love skinny jeans and opaque tights with dresses, my quirk is that I can't bare the look of my ankles coming out of the top of boots. It's the gap between the top of the boots and my leg iyswim? So even when I'm wearing opaque tights, leggings or skinnies I have to wear a pair of slouch socks or leg warmers scrunched down to fill the gap. This looks great in your teens and early 20's but in your early 40's not so much Blush

I think i must look a bit sad really as I'm happiest in skinnies, biker boots and black or grey vest tops and a biker style jacket. I do have pillar box red hair to add a bit of colour but I guess I really should start to dress more feminine and age appropriately Sad

My son who is incredibly stylish is always threatening an intervention. I must embarrass the life out of the poor lamb Grin

PennyPants · 13/09/2015 14:30

skinnies, biker boots and black or grey vest tops and a biker style jacket

MissT This is me 90% of the time too. I've got no plans to change anytime soon.

MissTMornings · 13/09/2015 14:36

Penny Its good to know I'm not the only one. I don't know how old you are but do you think that you will ever feel too old to dress this way? And how do you cope with the ankle gap....Grin
