I had a cut and blow dry yesterday and loved it. Although my hair didn't look any thicker, it certainly didn't look flat.

I have fine hair and use a light oil product in it for blow drying finally found one that doesn't make my hair look greasy . I sometimes use a little finishing cream if I have flyaways.

Yesterday everyone was telling me my hair looked amazing. I've washed it this morning and it looks flat again.

The only way I can give myself a proper blow-dry is to use a Babyliss Big Hair styler. Definitely makes my locks look more groomed and salon fabulous.

Of course it can be done. Well, as long as you're flexible enough to reach.
But you have to take time. You know how long they took in the hairdressers? Well, you need to take longer, as there pros AND they can reach easily.

I use a powerful hairdresser that is still light enough to hold for ages , and some clips to section. And a big round bristle brush if I want to add volume, which I mostly do. And sometimes, tho not always, product. I rough dry it all first then I blow dry.

I have never ever managed to achieve anything with a hairdryer, but Babyliss Big Hair is amazing for me and my fine, frizz-prone hair. It is dead easy. Really really worth it.

Oh and I use Kerastase Ciment Thermique, swear by it.

Thanks for the replies. My 10 year old has left a clip lying around, I'll use that and my bristle brush. I just looked up babyliss big hairs. There are two from what I can see, the diamond that has 2 brushes and a cheaper one with one brush. There are also big hair-alikes, but I think it looks like the babyliss is the best option going by the reviews.

I won't get one today though so will try it manually. I'm going out this afternoon and want my hair to be lovely Grin

Good old fashioned hair mousse at your roots works wonders. Seriously. And a blast of cold air to the roots as you finish each section

CremeBrulee · 10/09/2015 18:14

I've never been able to do the blow drying with a brush and hairdryer thing. I have Babyliss Big Hair and it's ok but not amazing. I rarely use it as its a bit of a faff.

I recently bought a SteamPod and I love it! It leaves my hair with that shiny, blow dried look but it super quick and easy to use. It doesn't leave hair flat and poker straight like GHDs. I wash & rough dry my hair first (usually the night before) using the SteamPod cream. Once it's thoroughly dry, I apply a little of the serum and pass the SteamPod over each section once or twice (10 mins max) and voila - hairdresser standard hair!

I manage to do a passable blowdry now I have had some practice. I finally found a round bristle brush that suits my hair and is comfortable to use. It wasnt expensive ,I think it was from B&M or Home bargains but it does the job nicely.
I rough dry my hair then start blow drying continually turning the brush from top to bottom with the hair dryer concentrated down the length of the hair. I always blow slightly backwards so that once dry the hair has a tiny bit of rise to it which gives some fullness. I don't put anything at the roots of my fine hair as it drags it down. And I only out the merest suggestion of product at the bottom to smooth out any flyaway hairs.

I can do this in about 10 minutes at a push and often get compliments .But it took time practising first to get to this stage.

lucysmam · 10/09/2015 21:57

Practise!

Lots!

And lots!

And then some more!

I can almost do a passable blow dry now but I get bored doing it. & I can't do it using a mirror - the backwards image confuses the fuck out of me.

hookedonamoonagedaydreem · 11/09/2015 00:19

I watch how they do it in the hairdressers and often buy whatever they have used in my hair. I have a couple of brushes, clips, babyliss big hair type thing and GHDs. If I am going somewhere really special I put a mirror behind me so I can see the back as I'm drying/straightening it.

I rough-dry my hair, then go over it with Babyliss Big Hair to finish it off. BBH is the only appliance that even vaguely replicates a salon blow-dry and I really couldn't manage without it.

EmGee · 11/09/2015 11:48

I agree with the comments re BBH. Fantastic piece of kit!!! (I have shortish hair though)

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 11/09/2015 11:56

Tell me more about the Steampod, please.

Mimigolightly · 11/09/2015 12:25

The keys to a successful blow-dry are:

  • The brush you use: can it easily go through your hair, is it small/large enough for your hair length, is it the right bush for what you want to achieve?
  • Sectioning your hair off and making sure you dry each section thoroughly, working from the underneath layers to the top layers.
  • The amount of tension you use on each section of hair via the brush - you actually need to use a lot of tension, especially around the roots to get volume.
  • The heat of the dryer - hot for drying, cold for setting.
  • practise, practice, practise
