Late 30's ladies how is your facial skin holding up?

whosthefairestofthemall · 08/09/2015 22:56

I am now in my late 30's and I am seeing my skin change, not deep wrinkles as such but fine lines round eyes, forehead, mouth, bridge of nose. Also skintone is a bit uneven if I don't use my glycolic. If I am standing at a social distance I don't really see them much but in good light up close they are visible. I shouldn't care but I don't like them not so much for what they are now but for what they could become.

It is difficult to know what is normal for this age as I don't want to peer at other peoples faces up close although I would love to! I have tried to have a discussion on skin changes with friends but all but one told me they didn't have any lines yet at all when without even peering I could see they did. Possible they just don't care that much about their skin and so don't think about it which is great but I do and would love to get a handle on what is normal signs of aging for a 38 year old?

From what you discribe I'd say you are doing well I'm your age and not too bad my eyelids are a bit crepy which is pretty normal I think for 38 and I too have fine lines where I move my face.

I also agree that at our age everyone starts being a bit selective with how they see themselves as you say saying they have no wrinkles when to absolutely do have massive deep lines under their eyes. Its the same as everyone over 35 thinking they are "young" for their age. It doesn't really matter though does it? Whatever gets you though the night and all that.

I'm 38.

I have fine lines around my eyes and on my forehead. Far more visible in bright daylight than in electric like everyone else. Skin is still firm and not sagging. I think I'm doing reasonably well against the range of what I've seen on other women my age. I've never been a sunbather and haven't smoked for the past 15 years but on the other hand I can drink a lot - it's genetics mostly I reckon.

My skin has improved since paying more attention to my cleansing routine - hot cloth/acid/serum/oil at night. It looks brighter and clearer, which is youthful I guess.

I'm not going to hang around on here as I can barely remember my late thirties - I just wanted to agree that women who say they're not looking any older may genuinely believe it to be true but it doesn't mean they're right. Often you just don't see it in yourself.

I still look great in the mirror but photos .... Jeez who's that round faced woman with massive jowls wearing my clothes?

Fraggled · 09/09/2015 07:17

Im 37 and I still get ID'd being alcohol! When that stops I'll know I look older! Grin

I have firm ski and some fine lines around my eyes but otherwise fine. Grey hairs a-plenty though!!

maybemyrtle · 09/09/2015 09:18

Lots of grey hair, fine lines around my eyes, my upper eye area seems to have dropped iykwim, skintone benefits from glycolic, but I still think I look OK. I'm 38 and I probably look my age. Don't drink, haven't smoked for 5 years, stayed out of the sun for most of my life.

Incidentally, I was at an exhibition last week that had a facial recognition/eye tracker piece and that decreed me to be a "young adult female". I was delighted!

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 09/09/2015 09:24

No lines, a couple of grey hairs, rosy cheeks, eyelids still where they ought to be. I'm 38.

A combination of good genes, lots of sunscreen and lots of vegetables - I'm sure it is mostly the genes, women in my family age very well.

Naicecuppatea · 09/09/2015 09:41

Just this year I have developed fine lines on forehead, a few under eyes, slightly dropped eyelids, and worst of all my eye bags are very noticeable. Loads and loads of grey hairs. I am a couple of months away from 40. I use glycolic acid and have noticed a good glow from it.

StormCoat · 09/09/2015 09:50

43 here, but facial skin looking ok compared to that of acquaintances who are smokers/sunbathers - I'm a pale Celtic type who defaults to Factor 50 in summer. The expected fine forehead lines and smile lines at the corner of my eyes.

The only rather battered bit is my bluish under-eye shadows, which are inherited, but my mother has lovely skin and is about to turn 70. The person I know of my age who looks oldest drinks too much, and restricts calories on food so she can drink them instead.

The thing I've found that has made a definite difference to my skin is never using wipes to cleanse unless I'm away/camping/there's an emergency. Hot cloth cleansing works well for me.

OddBoots · 09/09/2015 09:52

I have more smile lines than frown lines, if that continues I'll be very pleased.

NotTodaySatan · 09/09/2015 09:56

I'm mid thirties rather than late. My hair has gone silver but my skin is pretty fantastic. I have a few crinkles at the edges of my eyes when I laugh and a wee bit of darkness under my eyes but my resting bitch face is smooth, clear and taut. No spots or blemishes. I don't smoke, don't drink that much and never expose myself to the sun.

Maybe it will all go tits up in the next few years but right now I definitely do look younger in the face than 35.

franksidebottom · 09/09/2015 09:59

I'm 38, grey hair at the front, can't see the back! But I dye it every month. I think it's receding as well my forehead is massive looking. Fine lines under eye and on my forehead but have had those since late 20s. Use sunscreen, barely drink, gave up smoking early 20s, poor diet though. But I do have a young looking face,(I've been told). Thinking about botox for the forehead lines or cheaper alternative of a fringe. What is glycolic acid?

squoosh · 09/09/2015 10:21

I'm 37 and pretty pleased with my skin to be honest. I've very pale so have shielded myself from the sun since I was a nipper and that seems to be paying dividends. Not many lines and wrinkles (and I'm brutally honest with myself) only real signs of ageing are around the eyes, lines under my eyes when I smile as opposed to crows feet.

The main thing I'm aware of is that my face is slightly saggier than it was. That's why I'm intrigued by the ideas of facial exercises.

squoosh · 09/09/2015 10:25

In terms of people looking younger than they are I only really notice this when people get to their 60s and 70s. I think that's when you can see huge differences between people of a similar age.

mayum1 · 09/09/2015 12:45
  1. Fine lines under my eyes but that's about it really.
ShamelessHarpy · 09/09/2015 20:37

I think I'm in pretty OK nick. Very fine laughter lines and beginnings of those smoker lines around lips (I dont smoke Grin...but I purse my lips a lot, apparently Hmm).

Other than that, no wrinkles yet, but I can see that I am going to get nose-to-mouth lines eventually, and the scaffolding is starting to gently drop - bit more hollow around the eyes, slight sagging of eyelids.

The actual quality of my skin up close has def changed. I had flawless, dewy skin in my twenties. I'm a bit blotchy now (rosacea) and my skin feels 'thicker', but its nothing a bit of foundation won't help.

On the plus side, I've always stayed out of the sun and worn factor 50/sunglasses, eat fairly healthily, exercise and drink lots water, and my mum has aged very well. On the downside, I smoked for years and up until 2 years ago ...and I do like a drink Blush.

BearFoxBear · 09/09/2015 20:45

I'm a few weeks off of 40,and I've noticed more fine lines over the past year - but that may be because I have a crazy 14 month old ds!

I'm taking more care of my skin, but I do need to add highlighter to my foundation to give me a bit more of a glow. It's the forehead lines that are starting to bother me though - they aren't deep but I really notice them. I'll probably do something about them soon.

Doobigetta · 09/09/2015 21:59

I have quite deep naso-labial lines and a deep 1 between my eyebrows that bother me. Crows feet are still hardly visible, I think because I've always worn sunglasses if it isn't actually raining. A couple of horizontal lines on my forehead, but they're quite fine. Overall my skin has improved over the past year, since I started hot cloth cleansing and using serum in the daytime and facial oil at night. I used to have a few old acne scars on my cheeks that have all but gone, and generally it looks clearer and less blotchy than it used to.

orlakielyimnot · 09/09/2015 22:03

Everyone's different. There's a woman on a current reality show who's early 20's with striking forehead wrinkles.

pinksalt · 10/09/2015 21:01

I think even some kids get forehead lines, like some kids get grey hair. I think that a bit of slight sag, less firmess and more noticable fine lines are the norm.

IJustLostTheGame · 11/09/2015 08:30

Hair is now 50% white. Not even grey. I dye it. I'm weirdly excited. When it's all white I can dye it a mad colour every week. My hair was almost black before and I'm interested to see how I'd look blonde.
Ive got very pale celtic skin. I've always used factor 50 but I also smoked until recently. I have one faint forehead line and one between my brows. They've both improved to almost non existence since I started retinal a. My forehead also had horrid brown spots and began to look a bit leathery but that is improving too.
My eyelids are sagging a bit and are a bit creepy. I guess I'll just have to live with that.
On a tired day I look about 50. The other week at a wedding someone thought I was mid 20s. Although it was dark and we were all drunk.
Meh.
Aging sucks.

squoosh · 11/09/2015 10:42

Yes some little kids have forehead lines, they aren't always a sign of ageing.

I have a friend who wants to get botox because she thinks her face is too wrinkly when she raises her eyebrows! I tell her that even newborn babies have wrinkly foreheads when they raise their eyebrows.
