Is it OK for a wedding guest to wear a mainly black dress?

I know I personally didn't care less what guests wore to my wedding (SIL kept emailing to ask if such and such a dress was OK, and I was a bit bewildered), but are people still bothered by such things?

I'm just trying to avoid spending a fortune on a wedding guesty dress that I will never wear again. It's a London wedding in November. Dress code just says formal.

(I'm pretty excited I've found something in Debenhams that isn't totally revolting. But I haven't tried it on yet, so we'll see).

Crikey! I put this up and then got distracted by the kids and totally forgot. Now the app is down (is it still down?) I don't get to MN so much :(

Anyway, it appears that opinion is divided. My view at my wedding was that I didn't care what people wore as everyone was just going to be looking at me Grin (I'm not normally like this btw!).

I know the groom very well (and he obviously won't even notice what I wear), but the bride not so much. Maybe I'd be better playing it a bit safer? Also, I didn't realise the dress was being advertised everywhere, it does put me off a little bit. I'll have a click through some of the links you lovely people have put on here...

I'm definitely looking for a dress with sleeves which narrows it massively. The Quiz and New Look dresses would look a bit hideous on me I reckon, I have a long body and fairly big boobs, so the waist would likely be far too high, and the high neck would make me look more massive. I will be wearing dark tights underneath whatever I buy I reckon, I have calves like tree trunks! My goal is to look acceptable to the wedding party (I reckon parents of the bride might be quite traditional), not like a fat heifer in front of an old ex who will be there Wink , and not too Coast wedding guesty.

I like it, much nicer than a skater dress.
