Most people who wear trainers have never seen the inside of a gym.

I think they idea that trainers=gym is VERY old fashioned

PUGaLUGS · 05/09/2015 17:50

I have just been to NY.

DH wore Skechers
I wore Skechers
DS2 wore Nike Safaris

All of the above bought for NY. All were like wearing slippers.

DS1 wore Vans baseball boots.

Guess who had a massive blister and aching feet?

One day we walked 13.5 miles.

DH and I went to NY previously and wore the wrong footwear. Never ever again! We tried to discuss this with DS1 before we went this time but he was having none of our advice.

You will not look out of place with Skechers /trainers believe me.

I love Adidas Sambas or Gazelles. To my mind more attractive and skirt friendly (though less on trend) than full on trainer styling, but a bit less comfy for walking miles in - I've done 9 km in mine today and my feet are making me aware that they'd have preferred fitflops.

You could look at fitflops - they come in various styles, not all hideous and are the ultimate defence against pavements. eg these are pretty inoffensive

Gillybobs · 05/09/2015 18:00

I never ever wear trainers at home (Struggle with casual) but I've bought a pair of navy New Balance for our trip to NYC and DC in October. .you will walk miles and miles, you need trainers!

EachandEveryone · 05/09/2015 18:02

I need a bag to put them in. For instance, we are going to the Met, The Frick Collection walking through Central Park to The Boathouse for an early dinner. I'm not going to be able to wear trainers in there and I'm not going back to the hotel.

Just carry a rucksack and change for the restaurant if you feel you need to.

Gillybobs · 05/09/2015 18:10

Ah I love The boathouse!! Keep nice little flats in your bag and keep a folded up cotton tote in there too, change shoes and pop the trainers in your tote?

mathanxiety · 05/09/2015 18:18

If you are going to the Frick Collection you are definitely going to need sneakers, ditto walking through Central Park, which is two and a half miles long and half a mile wide.

You will have to check a big handbag at the Frick, so bring a small one as well as the big one if you need to keep any items to hand while you are looking at the collection (phone, wallet, etc).

The Met - bring a big bag plus a plastic bag from a drugstore and put the sneakers in the plastic bag in your big bag. Don't put wet shoes or shoes that have trodden the pavements directly into your bag.

mathanxiety · 05/09/2015 18:20

Foldable and squashable ballet flats

Squooshed · 05/09/2015 19:49

The frequency at which Skechers are recommended on the S&B boards distresses me greatly.

EachandEveryone · 05/09/2015 20:26

When I said I was walking in Cenral Park I only meant from the Frick to the Boathouse. I have to be there for 3 pm so imagine I won't do that much that day. Does anyone know how far the walk is?

I went a week ago so it was hot.
I wore Birkenstock all the time
Do not bring anything you can not walk miles in.
To see the sights the quickest and cheapest way around is walking and the subway.
You can always buy trainers when you are there
They are cheaper than England but come prepared in very comfortable shoes

BaxterDawes · 05/09/2015 21:19

I was there last month.

I wore Birkenstocks or trainers all the time and I was covering enormous distances.

Your Frick to Boathouse is only about 8 blocks? (I may be wrong...)

EachandEveryone · 05/09/2015 21:27

Any other must do's? Did u buy anything?

"The frequency at which Skechers are recommended on the S&B boards distresses me greatly."

Why?

There are a lot of people who prefer comfort over looks, especially if you are doing a lot of walking. I like pretty shoes, but if I am on my feet all day I couldn't care less what my feet looked like as long as they are comfortable.

mathanxiety · 05/09/2015 22:17

It's not a long walk, but how much trekking around the Frick do you intend to do? Sneakers are perfectly acceptable in art venues unless you are at a reception (and in some cases especially if you are at a reception).

Actually, wearing smart shoes there would mark you out as someone who wasn't into the art at all and just got dragged there by someone else.

Bunbaker, I think it's Skechers in particular and not comfy footwear in general that is being frowned at.

BatonRouge · 05/09/2015 22:28

EachandEveryone - I wouldnt recommend those Hueraches on Ebay. Two read flags - Price and that their being exported from Hong Kong.

EachandEveryone · 05/09/2015 22:28

How big is the Frick and where should I head for in the met? I'm guessing I'll have 10-230 to explore before the boathouse. I'm trying not to panic. Not thinking of coats yet.

I would get black on black Roshe run. £70 in office or urban outfitters - 10% off if you can use a student card.

DD asked my American sister in law last week whilst in NYC if she could get away with trainers with a little black top shop dress and SIL really couldn't understand why anyone would ask the question it is such standard dress.

I find galleries are where I need the trainers most - that slow shuffle is harder on the feet than normal walking.

See European art at the Met - so much more than I ever saw in one place in Europe.

The Whitney is in a new building in the meat packing district and pretty fab for a visit.

mathanxiety · 05/09/2015 22:45

The Frick is quite small, with under ten galleries iirc.

The Met is more sprawling. I like the Asian and European and Modern collections. Here is a 'suggested itineraries' link that might help you narrow down your interests.

EachandEveryone · 05/09/2015 22:45

Yes I might go there when I do The Highline
