Lost 3 stone, hair falling out, will it grow back?

I've lost three stone with healthy eating over the last eight months.

My diet consists of lean meat/chicken/fish, veg, fruit, full fat milk, cottage cheese, wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, low fat greek yoghurt, porridge etc. I take cod liver oil daily too.

However my hair had been falling out constantly for the last couple of months. I'm getting bloods done next week to check for anything but in the meantime can anyone advise?

If you've lost weight and maintained the weight loss and had a lot of hair loss like this, did it grow back?

(I've lost about one third of my hair volume.)

I've lost about 3.5 stone over the past 12-18 months but also had a baby in that time so I just assumed my hair loss was hormonal but maybe it is weight loss related too...

Maybe your body has been deficient in various minerals and vitamins or maybe it's the 'shock' from weight loss?

I would say that I have also lost about 1/3 of my hair, especially at the temples. It was shedding constantly for a few months, everywhere I went there was a trail of hair. It's disgusting and so upsetting I know Sad

Mine has just slowed down now, a year on so I hope the end is in sight for you.
I'm still shedding but not to the same extent and I do see new hair growing along my hairline.
Are you taking a multi vitamin?

Good luck with your bloods xx

Ps, if you do a search on here you'll find dozens of hair loss threads Smile

Thank you for the reply, very interesting. I haven't been taking a multivitamin, but I've just bought one especially for hair so fingers crossed.

I'm glad you're noticing new growth, that's comforting to know.

Thank you.

quietbat possibly as I'm 45. My cycle is still regular. I really hope it's not hormonal as my hair is looking quite thin now.

I've lost 3.5 stone over the last year due to health issues but haven't had any problems with hair loss. I've never heard of hair loss as a side effect of losing weight - it's normally more to do with hormones isn't it?

velourvoyageur · 30/08/2015 19:53

I have actually heard of telogen effluvium happening due to weight loss (which does mean it'll grow back without your doing anything), yeah, but you could also check for a deficiency?

The weight loss might be a red herring though - are you itching at all....I have dermatitis which used to cause bad hair loss. Maybe some of the new foods you're eating are triggering this. Just an idea.

Hope things sort themselves out soon and congrats on the hard work :)

Hi again,
just wondering if the bloods showed up anything?

poocatcherchampion · 07/09/2015 10:48

What is your bmi? If it is very low that could be a factor?

Duckdeamon · 07/09/2015 10:50

Yes what's your BMI, or category? Have you been on a low calorie type diet and lost weight quite fast?

stripytees · 07/09/2015 11:16

My friend had weight loss surgery and hair loss has definitely been one of the side effects but that's more about her system not absorbing nutrients until about a year after the surgery.

This shouldn't happen through healthy eating and a sensible pace of weight loss. Yours might have been a bit too quick unless you had a lot to lose?

lorelei9 · 07/09/2015 12:22

I would be surprised if weight loss is linked.

if it's any help, I lost hair after an illness. I took biotin and I think that helped it grow back. It is possible that it grew back as I recovered but it could be worth a try?

wokeupwithasmile · 08/09/2015 22:52

I had massive and very upsetting hair loss some years ago, due to stress. Obviously I do not know what the cause of your hair loss is, but mine slowly 'grew back' and I was not feeling uncomfortable about them at all when pregnant with my first baby.
After the second, I am now having the same issue, partly due to stress but possibly also because of the breastfeeding/lack of nutrients for myself.
One thing that helped me was cutting my hair short. Less chances of breaking them when brushing/washing/etc. Aussie shampoo also reduced the amount of hair I could see in the shower after washing them. Probably because it makes lots of foam compared to others, which I know is not good but...
