Hair suddenly started getting really greasy :-(

I have noticed recently that my hair is getting really greasy very quickly Hmm - I wash it at 6am and by 3.30pm, the front/fringe looks bloody awful and it is embarrassing as I am at still at work.

Whilst I have always had to wash it everyday due to it being prone to greasiness, it has always looked ok all day and it has got greasy overnight so this is definitely a new development.

Has anyone else had this and any tips to stop it happening?

How old are you? I'm 47 and my hair is getting more greasy. I've just started using superdrug's Apple and tea tree oil shampoo which seems to be helping.

I am 41 - wonder if it is pre-menopause related? For some reason, I thought hair got drier as you got older - clearly I was wrong Sad

I have the driest hair ever, so when mine started to be a bit greasy out of the blue, I swapped shampoo. Johnson's baby shampoo is it for me now. It appears that I was developing an intolerance to regular shampoo.

bobbins thanks for that - I might try that. What is the difference in baby shampoo?

Looking at the label and comparing it to OH's shampoo, baby shampoo has non ionic surfactants in it and regular shampoo has anionic ones like sodium Lauren sulphate. Also baby shampoo usually has a pH closer to water, which is about 7.

I started using soap for washing my hair. I tried some from this shop

I have been using soap for nearly 2 months and am never going to go back to shampoo and conditioner.

I am 49 and definitely my hair changed how it responds to washing them.

JustWantToBeDorisAgain · 27/08/2015 22:24

Has the shampoo changed formula? Have you thought of using a cleanser once a week to reduce build up ( I use t-gel every so often not for itching ( anymore) but to reduce the build up)

bigbuttons · 27/08/2015 22:44

I had this recently. In the end, after trying all sorts, I swapped to a lush shampoo. I think it was all the crap in regular shampoos that was building on my hair. I couldn't get it clean. I also had a really itchy scalp. My hair's great now. I hate how expensive lush is though and will be trying a faith in nature shampoo next.

bigbuttons · 27/08/2015 22:46

I have also toyed with getting something from funky soap but was worried it wouldn't clean properly.

RainbowFlutterby · 27/08/2015 22:48

Shampoos with fructose (or something like that) can cause greasy hair. Timotei (sp?), for example, made my hair awful.

antimatter · 27/08/2015 23:04

bigbuttons - order one bar of soap, I am using it on my body too, very convenienet Grin
one bar lasted 6 weeks so not very expensive over all, one comment I can make - it needs to dry left out exposed or it gets very wet, but that's not difficult to manage

So far I finished a bar of Black Walnut Hull Shampoo for Black/Dark.
I started few days ago Coffee Shampoo Bar for Brown/Dark Hair.

I think my hair has changed since I started the menopause. I have always washed and conditioned my hair every day, but just recently I washed it using shampoo only (no conditioner). It seems to have done it good, it's shiny and soft and not at all greasy.

onlywhenyouleave · 28/08/2015 04:07

Thanks everyone, some really helpful suggestions.

I have to say that I have a really itchy scalp aswell (and I have checked over and over for nits and it isnt that) so is it linked?

It is not due to a change of shampoo formula as I changed shampoos a couple of weeks ago to see if that made a difference but it didn't!

BobbinThreadbare · 28/08/2015 08:45

The itchy scalp is linked, I would say. I had the same thing. It's all of those sulphates! There are some shampoos that are worse for me than others; those Aussies ones destroy my scalp and yes, fructose ones like Garnier basically cause gluey, matted looking hair.

yazzy85 · 28/08/2015 10:29

Baby Shampoo works for me too, also Neutrogena T-Gel for Greasy hair every once in awhile.

bigbuttons · 28/08/2015 10:50

I will order some shampoo/ soap then! I have dark brown/ auburn hair. How have you found the shampoo for dark hair ?

Yes itchy scalp is definitely linked with the grease. I think your scalp is irritated from the chemicals and is producing oil to compensate. Your hair shaft will also be coated with layers of silicone so it is nigh on impossible to actually clean the hair itself as there are layers coating it and each time you wash you add another layer and irritate the hell out of your scalp!

Well that's my theory!

Libitina · 28/08/2015 18:29

If you use a decent shampoo such as Aveda or Philip Kingsley etc... you should get no build up of product.
