Can I ask for advice please?

Dd is coming up for thirteen and has said that she would like to start to wear some make up and so I'd like to buy her a set of essentials. I rarely wear much more than a lick of mascara and lip gloss so I feel out of my depths so what would you recommend? I'd like to get stuff that is kind to her skin too. So tell me what she needs and what brands you'd recommend too please?

I am NO expert - and I have a 3 year old son, but I think I would stick with mascara, eye liner, lip gloss and maybe a blush? An eyeshadow pallete too maybe?

Brand wise I am again, no expert, but rimmel was my very first thought. Also, super drugs own brand which I can't remember name of has some good bits too.

I don't feel like I've been any help at all here - hope someone more knowledgable is along soon for you!

I wouldn't buy her anything. Let her choose herself. She may not want to use foundations and powders etc. if you buy her a full face worth of stuff she may feel she 'has' to use it.
Go shopping with her and let her pick one or two bits maybe.

I agree with SealSong, but I might steer her towards a BB cream (if she needs it), then Rimmel / ELF / Boots No 17 mascara (brown black is more subtle and flattering than black if she is paler) and the same for an eyeshadow duo / palette

I also agree with SealSong - she doesn't 'need' anything so I would just let her experiment, enjoy it and yes, get it wrong sometimes. Just try and make sure she takes it all off before going to bed

Boots 17 brand is really great quality and cheap. Would be perfect for your dd. I use a lot of their products. Also Superdrug 'MUA' brand is good. They do eyeshadow palettes which are cheap but highly pigmented and last ages. I have perioral dermatitis so have to be very careful what I use and 17 makeup has always been very gentle on my skin.

I agree with others that say to steer her away from foundation etc. and pick out a bb cream or tinted moisturiser if she really wants to wear something on her skin. Definitely make a day of it. She will love it!

I was going to take her out to choose but just wondered what I should be buying for her. Some great advice, thank you at least I have some idea now what I should be looking at. We'll make a day of it before she has to go back to school.

Yes take her to Superdrug and give her a tenner. You will be amazed at the prices of MUA. £1 for a lipstick. She doesn't need foundation. I don't even wear it every day, never have. The trend for teenage girls is defined eyes so mascara, eyeliner and something for eyebrows.

I think I'd set an appointment at someplace like BobbiBrown and ask for an age appropriate, low key make over. Then I would buy one or two items, that she wanted. Finally, I'd let her buy make up from the drugstore out of her pocket money. I'd reserve the right to veto her leaving the house with too much makeup on, and I would reserve the right to selectively judge what was too much. (unfair, but them's the breaks!)
