Are button through denim skirts still in and, even if they are, is this one too frumpy?

Just that really. After years of thinking denim button through skirts had become really frumpy, suddenly they were in again. Do people think they still are?

If so, what about this particular one?
www.artigiano.co.uk/art/denim-skirt-askf585ind24

I find Artigiano generally very frumpy. But this is what I've been looking for - ie, a button through that fits me (size 22). The long length can easily be sorted - no problem getting it taken up as necessary - but my prejudice against Artigiano leads me to suspect there must be something just a bit 'off' about this, like so many of their pieces.

Doesn't help that I'm afraid people round here would probably think I'm still wearing my denim skirt from the last time around!

Lastly, any tips for what to wear with this type of skirt if I do get one?

Is there a reason why you particularly wanted a button through one?

Its an awful lot of money for something that you would need to alter the length of so drastically. Evans have 2 much nicer denim ones, one long and 1 shorter here and here.

polyhymnia · 24/08/2015 14:09

Yes I did really want a button through as I think that for some reason they are - or were?- more current.
Agree it's a lot of money though!

I've got one (charity shop) that I've worn a lot with bare legs and a t-shirt this summer and hope to try with tights, heeled ankle boots and a turtleneck jumper when it's cooler.

polyhymnia · 24/08/2015 14:32

Yes that would be the ideal source Remus. I certainly regret having given a couple I had from 'last time around' to a charity shop a few years ago!

I know you've got style. Do you think the one I posted, duly shortened and pricy though it is, could fulfil a similar role in my wardrobe as your wise buy does?

Honestly, I have no style at all but I do like clothes! I think it would work well. If not too long, it could work with knee high boots as well, and that would be more 70s. I must admit, I tend not to worry about 'fashion' trends, and just wear what I want/like though.

polyhymnia · 24/08/2015 14:58

Thanks for the encouragement. I like clothes too, size 22 or not!

I can get the nice local alterations lady to make it whatever length I want for a modest sum.
And strangely enough I just this weekend unearthed in a clear out some knee length boots which I think would go well.

Leaving aside that it's Artigiano (I've ended up on their mailing list too Grin) I think the main issue I would have is that it's 65% tencil which I think is one of those natural-but-man-made fibres that can be a very clingy. I can't link at the moment but Top Shop have one on their website that looks very similar and is 100% cotton (and at leat half the price).

Floisme · 24/08/2015 15:34

Sorry - just remembered Top Shop only do comedy sizes. I'd still like to think thare are 100% cotton ones out there somewhere.

Capucine00 · 24/08/2015 15:37

The more flattering cuts are A line and you need to try them on because if the waist yoke isn't cleverly cut, it can make your abdomen look much plumper because the button up bulges over that area.

I think the one you link to is a bit too long. On the knee is flattering, especially with knee high boots, high heeled mules or clogs. They look best with sturdier shoes to balance out the heaviness of the denim fabric.

This season the look is a bit seventies preppy. Think Ali Mcgraw in Love Story, all thick polo necks, skinny rib sweater, scarves, polished leather zip boots. That's the way to make them look fresh and stylish.

MetallicBeige · 24/08/2015 15:43

Next had them in last time I noticed.

polyhymnia · 24/08/2015 15:45

Thanks for that Capucine. Good point about button on tummy etc. I recall those issues now from last time round. If I do buy and keep I'll definitely get shortened if necessary so just on knee.
I have the boots at least for the look you're talking about! Not Ali McGraw looks though.

midi length?
more faded
a nice navy one
maxi length?

polyhymnia · 25/08/2015 15:52

Thanks. I liked the first one of those the Asos one.

Based on observing bloggers, I think the hem length is quite hard to get right. I love denim and A line but the button through is a difficult look to pull off. I am sure it suits some of you though!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/08/2015 17:19

The Topshop one looks really nice. Might try that one myself.

mayum1 · 26/08/2015 09:11

Each and every high street store in Australia has one right now! But the short kind.

sleepyelectricsheep · 26/08/2015 09:18

"Doesn't help that I'm afraid people round here would probably think I'm still wearing my denim skirt from the last time around!"

Do people really think like this?

And why on earth do you care?!

WhiteHairReally · 26/08/2015 10:38

For the same price as the Artigiano one, East has a 100% cotton denim A line. No buttons but a neat seam instead. I've had loads of wear out of mine all summer and will into AW too. Great vanity sizing too! Could well be well frumpy though!
'East denim skirt' is my 'link'!

polyhymnia · 27/08/2015 10:16

Thanks for the East suggestion, white.

Good point, sleepy. It's true some people I know are still wearing A line denim skirts from their last time in fashion. But I think I'm actually projecting on 'others' my own view that these skirts - which I'd worn myself on their first time round - had become frumpy, until their recent revival.

I agree that, if I find one I feel happy in and can put together with other things I have, it would be stupid to worry about 'what others think'. And I don't think I'm really that daft!

Capucine00 · 27/08/2015 11:58

I think you can bear in mind what others think without worrying about it. Nothing wrong with wanting other people to admire your dress sense, to think of you as stylish. And hopefully this accompanies their thinking that you are also an intelligent and interesting person when they get to talk with you. :)

KnockMeDown · 27/08/2015 13:21

I would personally be very wary of the button through style - it can gape and stick out very unattractively, and add unwanted inches to the tummy area.

You are much better off going with one of the flat across the tummy styles.
