Boys clothing range - limited...

Hi all

Would you agree that the options available for boys in retail shops in terms of clothing is very limited? I am a new mum of a 1 year old and I often found myself walking into children shops where most of the shop floor is taken over by pretty girls clothes when the boys are often found in a hidden corner for a quarter or even less space? Is this just me, or more mums out there share the same problem?

I think the toddler age can be difficult to dress for both boys and girls. I think it's because they aren't quite babies but pre-school aged clothes don't always seem right.

When I was pregnant with ds, I remember seeing lots of pretty girls clothes and nothing for boys. He's now 5 and has lots of lovely clothes.

Dd, on the other hand, I struggle with, but she's just turned 3 so it's no so difficult now.

As the mother of 4 boys (now aged between 12 and 18) I completely agree!! I've counted the racks of boys v girls clothing in shops over the years and there is always much more girls stuff. Plus the boys stuff is always so samey and never really varies over the years either.

FluffyCubs · 21/08/2015 16:15

It really irritates me no end, especially as my boys care about what they wear. We like h&M. TK MAXX. Sainsbury gave surprisingly nice stuff. Shoes n coats from m&s. Just bought my son v stylish school shoes from next

I have a toddler boy and struggle to NOT buy clothes for him! He has lots of white company, mini Boden, bit of joules and Zara, loads of vintage stuff. (I only buy on eBay or clearance)

I really enjoy shopping though and look around for him, if you just pop into a kids clothes shop I can appreciate the girls stuff far outweighs the boys.

jenniuol · 21/08/2015 18:36

To an extent I agree, lots of shops do have much more variety for girls. I have a 2 year old boy and I like baby gap, P.O.P, mamas and papas (only in sale!), sometimes the supermarkets can be good if you're selective, boots too.

GreyBird84 · 21/08/2015 21:30

I agree.

Zara is fab as is john Lewis.
Debehams too is quite gd, we've a wedding next wk & I gut DS (1yr) a really beautiful outfit but it took a lot of searching - I'd have had a girl dressed in 5mins!

Dukketeater · 21/08/2015 21:32

YES!

And then you have to rule out 2/3rds of the clothes unless a rhino wearing a bowler hat on a sailing boat is your style...

Shhhh · 21/08/2015 21:38

Been there , done that & bought many stunning shirts Grin ! You may
Even find some of my old threads about this very subject !
I find the following have a fab, funky, stylish range :
Boden (even now that ds is 8)
P.O.P
John Lewis
Joules on occasion
And....tbh ds does get a lot of designer, more than dd (10) and only because I can dress her fab from next ,m&s, Boden etc. with ds I pay that bit more but he gets less but I try & mix & match.
For designer I usually buy from :
Ralph Lauren
Paul smith
Armani

Yep completely agree! I have a daughter and then 2 sons! I loved shopping when my daughter was little, so much to choose from and so pretty as well. So hard with the boys, on a budget and found most stuff was all dull colours - khaki, Browns and navy with either skulls, sharks or footballs on. Just horrid. So hard to find 'nice' things. I find my opinion now is pointless anyway - they are both superhero obsessed and are happy as long as their t shirt has iron man or superman on it. I do ensure they have a nice smart shirt and a Lacoste or polo Ralph Lauren polo for occasions.
I still find a massive problem with shoes though - girls are amazing! Endless choices of beautiful shoes. Boys are black, brown or navy. and that's it. Wish clarkes and startrite would bring out nicer styles for toddler boys x

Ally1234 · 23/08/2015 16:11

But until your son has an opinion of his own try Boden (although I haven't like much this season tbh), frugi, next and monsoon x

Vintagebeads · 23/08/2015 17:57

I love name it,lots of colour and cotton for boys and priced around the next price point.

BikeRunSki · 23/08/2015 18:01

As the mother of a 6 year old boy, I agree.
As the mother of a 3 year old girl, if you take out anything pink and glittery/frilly from the girls' stuff, it's even more limited.

Boden, H&M, John Lewis, Sainsbury's and Little Bird (at Mothercare) work well for both my DC, and Gap for DS.

burnishedsilver · 23/08/2015 18:17

Website shopping is ok but there in no selection in the physical shops. It gets worse when they are older and are between boys sizes and mens sizes.

NewBallsPlease00 · 23/08/2015 18:49

I agree but in fairness there are more shapes of clothing for girls ie skirts, shorts with tights, dresses etc

I have a 4yeae old ds and frequently look at photos thinking he'll be weary by larger version of same at 10/13/15...

BornToFolk · 23/08/2015 18:58

While I agree that there is way more choice for girls, I've never found it an issue finding nice things for DS (7)

The vast majority of his clothes are from H&M as they are brightly coloured (vital for DS who prefers really bright colours), hard wearing and well-priced. I get the odd things from John Lewis, Gap and Landsend in sales too.

bikeandrun · 23/08/2015 19:01

I think it is harder to find stuff for boys in cheaper shops, buying a few basics for the kids in George at Asda, wasn't any t-shirts for boys without stupid characters or slogans. If your son is of a skinny build( ie French!) decathlon has great kids clothes, less obviously pink for girls / tractors for boys and can be very cheap. Got some nice t shirts with a sort of mountain motif for £2.49 each.

Branleuse · 23/08/2015 19:04

most of the stuff for girls is shite princessy stuff though. I think the range for boys is great these days
