Early 30s or so? Where do you shop?

I feel at an awkward point in my life. Apart from the none ripped jeans in Topshop, places like River Island haven't appealed in years. I find say, Marks and Spencer too frumpy and have the added problem of having short legs so I have difficulty with most jeans/trousers.

I seem to have fallen into a rut of Boden Breton tee shirt and Topshop skinnies for none work.

Anyone else feel a bit lost in the style department? Should I just stick to quality basics and try to perk it up? Dangly jewellery is unfortunately a no go with young ones. Ah!

Ooh thanks LBOCS - I'll look out for that. x

I'm redoing my wardrobe from scratch, most of its from H&M, our town has only got one very recently and I'm super impressed! Grin

Mermaid36 · 15/08/2015 20:14

I'm 35 and can't fit into anything from Gap, Top Shop etc (and I'm only a size 16).

I get basics from Next (black trousers etc), but also Matalan, Tesco and H&M. I also like Fat Face and Joe Browns.

I'm ever so slightly goth and 50's so a lot of my going out stuff is Little Booteek, Lindy Bop, H&R London, Collectif and Lady Vintage.

Shoes are Ruby Shoo and TUK for normal stuff and Hawkshead for outdoorsy stuff.

Lindorballs · 15/08/2015 20:15

I'm 32 next week and I shop in oasis, h+m, Dorothy Perkins and quite a lot online where I buy stuff from a variety of different brands through sites like zalando and house of Fraser (I've got bits from brands like Great Plains and therapy). I quite like Oliver bonas as well. For weddings and events where I want to spend a bit more I've gone for Ted baker for example.

Lindorballs · 15/08/2015 20:16

Also a few bits lately from sainsburys! (Tu range)

LoadsaBlusher · 15/08/2015 20:32

River Island
EBay
Tesco
Boohoo
Missguided
Miss Selfridge

Happy36 · 15/08/2015 20:36

Try Zara, Mango, H&M.

NeverNic · 15/08/2015 20:59

32 and I would say almost everything I've bought this year has been from primark, h&m and new look. In the winter I buy bits from zara and asos.

I really don't get the outdoorsy brands like fat Face and Jack wills. It doesnt suit my personality and it's really yummy mummy casual. I live in a large town surrounded by the countryside so everyone dresses like this. I don't get the sludgy colours or the price tag!

I wear a lot of smart leggings (patterned or tux style, some I've got from next) or skinny jeans with loose silk blouses, embellished jumpers or thin tshirts / loose vest tops. I favour fabrics that look more expensive than they are and have something unusual. I get more 'fashiony' bits especially in summer from new look. I spend money on my hair and skincare. Oh and funky necklaces

rubybleu · 15/08/2015 21:24

Hobbs, LK Bennett and Jigsaw covers 90% of my work wardrobe - I work in the City & wear mostly dresses with co-ordinating jackets for meetings. There's zero crossover between my work and play wardrobes.

For casual I wear a lot of Gap, J Crew, Massimo Dutti, & Other Stories and a bit of Jigsaw.

Drivinghomeforchristmasornot · 15/08/2015 21:26

Warehouse, oasis, Dorothy Perkins, next, gap, sainsburys

squizita · 15/08/2015 22:44

Vintage, alternative shops (Etsy, little booteek etc), TK Maxx, River Island, Bicester Village outlets.
Also posh charity shops (my secret designer sources). Wink

I'm mid/late 30s. I don't think I dress younger than most 30+ women round my area, it's quite diverse and there are affluent bits.

Some MN favourite shops are more where my mum shops than me...

SomeKindOfDeliciousBiscuit · 15/08/2015 23:16

I'm 33. I shop at the White company, jigsaw, next for jeans (after much soul searching I realised that they fit me much better than all the expensive ones I tried - I'm destined for affordable jeans Grin ) cos, French connection, Laura Ashley... I think my style is probably quite conservative, but not as dull as it sounds!

ephemeralfairy · 15/08/2015 23:23

I'm 34. I like H&M, Oasis, Primark, find odd bits in COS (overpriced though!), Joy, Oliver Bonas, ASOS, boohoo. I find Topshop overrated, and overpriced for the quality. Shoes from Office. Also get lots of stuff from charity shops and random boutiques and markets.

I never find anything in Zara, the cut and sizing seems to be way off for me.

One of my former colleagues described me as 'dressing flamboyantly'. I do wear a lot of leopard print, clashing prints, bright colours. I suppose I don't really 'dress my age'. I don't have an office job so I don't have to worry about smart workwear. My only concession is that I don't wear anything really short in summer. I have lots of bright/printed cigarette style or ankle grazing trousers which I wear with pointy flats and sleeveless blouses or shell tops.

squizita · 16/08/2015 11:32

Somekind Ooh are Next jeans good? I'm a label or gap jeans girl, but thanks to their huge kids wear range I'm often in Next now. The adult clothes aren't often my style but the jeans look nice.

Dynomite · 16/08/2015 17:58

For work - Austin Reed, Reiss, Hobbs, Massimo Dutti for casual Friday. I work in the City and I have to dress quite conservatively.

For weekends - jeans from Levis and tops/dresses from wherever, usually Zara or Massimo Dutti.

Dynomite · 16/08/2015 17:59

Oh, and shoes from Gabor. They fit me really well and are very comfy.

Runningupthathill82 · 16/08/2015 18:44

I'm 33. Topshop, Warehouse, Asos are my staples.
Gap black trousers for work, but nothing else from there. Zara and Oasis occasionally.

Currently in Asos mat jeans, River Island loose 3/4 sleeve top and warehouse vest underneath (baby bump cover!)

I can't believe the number of people my age saying they shop in fat face, Boden, Joules, White stuff etc - surely it's yummy mummy frump?! My mum (63) looks fine in her Joules hoody and jeans. Anyone younger - sorry, just don't get it.

As a pp said, you've got the rest of your life to start wearing comfortable sweatshirts in bright colours...

DeandraReynolds · 16/08/2015 19:18

I've never been a follower of fashion really - my wishlist for clothes is basically comfortable, natural fabrics and decent quality Grin

squizita · 16/08/2015 19:19

Running YY that's my mum's style too! Grin

LBOCS · 16/08/2015 19:21

I'm the same Deandra. I resent paying quite a lot of money on something which will date quickly or is made of synthetic material, which seems to be what the high st shops mainly offer.

stripytees · 16/08/2015 19:50

I don't get the hate about particular shops. Have you looked at the Boden website recently? Short fitted dresses, pencil skirts, skinny jeans, good quality knitwear in lovely colours etc.

Mermaid36 · 16/08/2015 19:58

I think I'm lucky that I can go to work in fairly casual stuff. Tomorrow's outfit is a H&M skirt with hearts on, a tshirt with My Little Pony on it and a pair of black converse (I work for a large multi national insurance company)

squizita · 16/08/2015 20:02

I live near an actual Boden shop. It does very well and the clothes are well made, but 30-40 year old women very rarely go in.

Really, no one round here (not hyper trendy, family bit of London leaning towards more affluent) tends to wear it in their 30s. People either go with city/classic preppy or follow trends or go designer if they're minted.

I'm not 'hating' it just mystified about its apparent popularity with my age/lifestyle/demographic ... MN is the only place I've seen it promoted for 30 year olds - and I read up on clothes/style from a number of angles.

Flowershower · 16/08/2015 22:27

For casual, Superdry have some nice stuff, if you go past the hordes of teenagers buying colourful t shirts and hoodies to the back of the shop...they do really good jeans!! Also have a few Hollister t shirts and jumpers. All Saints is good too.
