Is there such a thing as a stylish fleece?

We're going camping next week and I need to get a fleece because I Kon Mari'd my wardrobe and threw out anything I didn't love. The decade old fleece did not survive. However, I think I'll freeze without one so can you point me in the direction of a not hideous one? That's warm and not expensive?

Try uniqlo for some very compact and thin down jackets that might work as an extra layer with the aforementioned merino or under your jacket of choice.

Fleeces are practical,not stylish.
Personally I'd go for one without ribbed cuffs, because they get wet and stay wet,and go for an outdoor brand.
Much better than wool, in that wool holds the wet, gets heavy and itches.
You're camping, not on the catwalk, and I think fleeces have had a bad press!

I have this www.sandwich.eu/en/fleece-jacket-red-ff0000/product/1023/
Can recommend for warmth and non fleece looking fleece

I got a should have been pricey one in the go outdoors sale, think it's north face, and am now a total convert to expensive fleeces. Totally different to cheap ones! And it has sort of wooden buttons.

Or totally submit to fleece and get a wolf print one?

RaisingSteam · 10/08/2015 23:55

How about a pile lined hoody type one? like the ones Boden do for kids?

oh look!

I think practicality might have to win out on this occasion, layers, a God quality fleece if I can find one for cheap cheap and/or uniqlo down thingy which I was planning to get for winter anyway. And I can wear a fleece to the gym on cold mornings so I might actually get some wear out of it. Sorry, stream of consciousness there.

Nosey, love the Norrona but had to buy a new washing machine last night so my budget just got smaller Confused

RaisingSteam - my girls have those, didn't know they did adults.

Fairy biker . I like that jumper/ fleece and I agree with the poster I feel that mostly fleeces do not look smart but that one has possibilities.

I cannot see any prices on the website. Am I doing something wrong?

100% merino is absolutely the way to go. Mountain Life, Trespass, Decathlon are all good, but try on first as sizing and itchyness can vary hugely. I love my woollies Grin OTOH they're not particularly stylish.

But I disagree that fleeces are not proper technical gear. We camp and hillwalk a lot, and each of us has several fleeces of various grades. After a few wears we know whether a fleece is more suitable for a lowland summer camp, a wintry hillwalk, or wild camping. And it's not always related to price. That said, 90% of the time you get what you pay for with the specialist makes, but Peter Storm can come up trumps, too.

For stylishness... The ones without wrist or waist elastication look best IMO.

Ah - risk of looking like family-that-buys-everything-from-Boden!

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 11/08/2015 17:27

Someone beat me to the wolf fleece! Sad Grin

I agree that fleeces have their place - often on a wet and windy walk, as nothing dries faster IME

I think you need to be clear about what you want from this garment: wearing it all the time (even maybe to sleep in); something to pull on to walk to the shower blocks; something to wear doing activities etc etc, as you might get a different answer each time.

My usual advice on buying this sort of stuff holds true here, though: try TK Maxx - they have all sorts of things like merino base layers and decent quality coats, esp if you are prepared to ferret around a bit on the racks

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 11/08/2015 17:28

And unless you are tiny, don't discount men's stuff - it is often better made (and not only in sodding pink or purple)

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 11/08/2015 17:31

Not stylish as such but not hideous
