Small holes always appear in my tops..... how to stop them??

foolmadammas · 06/08/2015 09:02

So, I've noticed over a long period of time that most of my tops (cotton t-shirts, woollen/cotton knits etc) all seem to develop small holes in them - usually at waist height at the front i.e. where the waistband of my trousers is.

I spent some birthday money last week on new clothes, and one longish tunic top, in cotton t-shirt material, already has three or four holes in!!

My thoughts are that it is either

a) my belt catching my tops? (I don't always wear belts though)

b) the waist band on my jeans catching the tops?

c) or maybe it is caused by the seat belt when driving??

d) or my washing machine?? (but the holes seem to usually be in the same place).

Does anybody else have this happen?? It is so annoying and wasteful! I have put another new top on today - gorgeous silk knitted loose top - I am wearing jeans, no belt, but I am paranoid that this is going to get holes in today as well!! But no point in having clothes in the wardrobe and not wearing them though.......

Thoughts??

Worktops are below the holes....I'm going with belts

RealHuman · 06/08/2015 13:13

Navel worms.

Lindy2 · 06/08/2015 13:17

I get this. After much pondering on the matter I decided the holes are exactly where my fingers touch when I take the top off, pulling it over my head. I am blaming my finger nails combined with buying cheap thin material tops.

woodhill · 06/08/2015 13:17

I still maintain it is poor quality clothing as none of my old stuff ever did this. I have had holes in the backs of my top usually White Stuff and Oasis, perhaps it's the manufacturing process and the idea that we will keep buying more.

i think the wool jumpers are much worse and bobble on first wear.

Lindy2 · 06/08/2015 13:18

But I quite like the idea of belly button worms too.

GrumpyOldBiddy2 · 06/08/2015 13:20

Not just you. Doubtful it's the washing machine as it's always the same place.

My vote is cross body bags / belts / buttons and seat belts rubbing.
or a mischievous pixie who sneaks into the drawer at night and takes bits of your clothes to make clothes for himself

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 06/08/2015 13:23

May I add that I blame my laundry basket for the little belly button height holes? That, and the kitchen work tops.
The only viable solution is no more housework whatsoever.

Likeaninjanow · 06/08/2015 14:10

I get these, and have decided it's thinner, poor quality material. I've switched to a lower spin on the washing machine, and wash my tops separately on a delicate wash. Problem solved.

cashewnutty · 06/08/2015 19:22

I think it is from jeans buttons rubbing the fabric. I used to get this all the time when i wore jeans. I got a bit porky and now wear jeggings with no buttons all the time. I have not had a single hole in a top for well over a year now.

skinnyamericano · 06/08/2015 21:38

I'm convinced it's the washing machine, although can't explain the placing of the holes.

I wash my tops inside a pillow case now and it hasn't happened recently.

So annoying when it happens to one of your favourites!

NuzzleandScratch · 07/08/2015 00:23

For me, I'm certain this happens from the zip on my jeans, as I caught sight of my jeans zip sticking out one time, touching my top where there was a hole. I think it's exacerbated by the lap bit of my seatbelt.

Paperblank · 07/08/2015 07:49

I get this and I've lots of ruined tops too Sad

I am sure it's jeans - buttons and zips. I think I'll have to resort to a naice pair of elasticated waist slacks!

auldspinster · 07/08/2015 07:58

I get this, i've put it down to my belt rubbing against the fabric when i'm sitting at my desk at work.

SomewhereovertheRainbow02 · 07/08/2015 08:04

I was talking about this to my DP last night. I came to the conclusion it's when I'm cooking over the hob and splashes of oil hit my top.

They are very annoying. nearly in every top I own Angry

BestIsWest · 07/08/2015 08:17

Not carrying children. DS is 6'5". I haven't picked him up for many years. Belts.

jennymac · 07/08/2015 08:37

I think it is something to do with the kitchen worktop and belts! I never had this problem until I moved into my current house and I think the worktops are at a slightly higher level. All DHs t-shirts used to be covered in these tiny holes but since we have moved, his t-shirts have been fine and mine have been ruined. Also, never seems to happen to my work clothes which I change out of as soon as I get home which is why I think it is to do with the worktops and not seatbelts or washing machine.

White stuff t shirt are really bad for holes.

I always get two holes. dH gets then in the sleeve on his shoulder, which can't be worktop rubbing. Unless he does have strange habit I don't know about!

DD has them on back of thigh in leggings. Car seat rubbing? All happens after the first wash or so.

I blame poor quality cotton.

I never had this with my clothes 10 years ago.

Eyre89 · 07/08/2015 15:02

It happened to us too it was our washing machine.

FrugalFashionista · 07/08/2015 15:18

I never get those holes. We have a granite countertop but I am 5'8 and the countertop hits my pubic bone ie at least an inch or two below any jean button and belt.

I deeply dislike and look for thick cotton in the most unlikely places, Decathlon was great last year.

foolmadammas · 07/08/2015 16:17

So, today I have a thin knitted top on, with no holes in it at the start of the day. I have put a longer length camisole on underneath it - something I probably would have normally down with this particular top. i have jeans on, but this camisole is covering the waistband and zip. I have washed up a couple of times, carried my ds around, worn my cross body handbag, been out and about in the car too wearing the seat belt, and so far no holes have developed...........

I will keep checking!!

There is a woman who posts on here who is obsessed with this, and has a long running thread somewhere. And most logical argument is that it is in fact washing machines

TeddyBear5 · 07/08/2015 17:04

It cannot possibly be the washing machine!

Everyone is experiencing holes in exactly the same place on multiple tshirts. That's more than a coincidence and a WM would throw up more random holes.

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 07/08/2015 17:06

You'll have to do a search. To say she was fanatical was an understatement

GreenShadow · 07/08/2015 21:02

I had this and finally concluded it was a very slightly rough top to the tall chest-of-drawers at which I did my make-up. I must have leant against it most mornings and unbeknown to me the rough bit was catching my top.
