Did Gok Wan do anything for women?

I'd like to think so . Some of his style ideas I found rather off the wall. Like stitching a huge chunk of fake gold costume jewellery onto one shoulder of a top or dress.

Another time he bought two £50 p,eared skirts ( wtf?) and layered one over the other to make a longish dress. Then added more bling than you could shake a stick at .

However I'd like to think he helped women gain confidence to experiment with fashion and do their own thing and make as much of themselves as possible.

What does the panel think?

I thought the whole point of being an hourglass was big boobs and bum, little waist Hmm

whattheseithakasmean · 27/07/2015 21:50

He tried to do all that 'love your curves' line, then stuffed all the chubbier women into modern day corsets - not much self love in thinking you have to wear acres of sweaty restrictive lycra to be acceptable.

Also high heels, always the high heels. His clothes looked so uncomfortable and drag queeny. Not a very progressive or practical look, if you ask me.

squizita · 27/07/2015 21:51

I agree with PP ... be proud of your body he said - then made everyone hour glass! Just replacing one body type with another, really.

This new wave of body positivity where actual body shape is celebrated without disguise rather than the limited 2 choices of "model slim/tall" or "pushed up hourglass" is far more to my taste morally and aesthetically.

squizita · 27/07/2015 21:56

FWIW I am hourglass ... G cup boobs, 25 inch waist and a bum maintained by squats and yoga. It is a shape I can imagine it being very uncomfortable to create by spanx/bra etc ... and it doesn't look right if you just belt in the middle. The curves/angles are wrong.
Just as if I wore a minimiser, spanx and heels I wouldn't suddenly look gazelle like and elegant. I'd look boxy.

Loafliner · 27/07/2015 21:57

I'm curvy but I don't want to look like Jessica Rabbit. My curves are curvy enough, i don't need to extend my boobs and arse to make my waist look smaller. Every week i saw him do the same thing.

AngieBolen · 27/07/2015 21:59

I'm not sure he truly understands woman's bodies, and what it's like to try and dress when you have curves (or don't and are just a blob).

But apart from that, he's lovely. Smile

I'd forgotten about Nicky H-J. She was quite good.

Doobigetta · 27/07/2015 21:59

Sorry, no- I think he's vile. Made me really angry the way he groped all his subjects. Being gay doesn't give you a free pass to assault people. It was nothing to do with boosting their confidence, it was all about his ego.

maybebabybee · 27/07/2015 22:01

Doob seriously...that's pretty insulting to people who have actually assaulted. Don't be so utterly ridiculous.

maybebabybee · 27/07/2015 22:01

Been assaulted, that should say!

TobleroneBoo · 27/07/2015 22:01

I have a Tu dress and I love it! It is navy with lace down each side and it has a hefty Spanx like underlayer and it makes me feel great SmileSmile

His recent range at the local sainsburys sold out in 24 hours. I bought a top for work and have been asked who the designer was of it.

Wasn't a fan before but am now.

MadeMan · 27/07/2015 22:05

"Plus, he calls tits 'bangers'."

I've heard him call them Chesticles.

plentyofshoes · 27/07/2015 22:13

He just annoyed me and still does. So no.

Doobigetta · 27/07/2015 22:26

Groping someone's tits without their permission is assault. I'm glad you don't think it's serious. I certainly would if it was me on the receiving end.

Loafliner · 27/07/2015 23:20

I hated that whole obesession naked too, what was that? Voyeurism sold a lot of programmes for him.....

afink · 28/07/2015 06:40

He pissed me off with that weird belt under the boobs thing he insisted on doing to hourglass shapes. It does nothing for that shape! I look pregnant if clothing is nipped in under my boobs - it needs to be pulled in at the waist because that's the narrowest part as any fule know.

SanityClause · 28/07/2015 06:51

Groping someone's tits without their permission is assault.

Furthermore, doing so on television appears to normalise it as acceptable behaviour.

HelenF35 · 28/07/2015 07:04

The jeans from his Sainsburys range are the most flattering I've ever owned. I love them.

SpidermanAteMyHamster · 28/07/2015 07:27

I like him. He does seem to really like women rather than just treating them as 'things' to dress up.
Those people saying about him putting belts on everyone, I think the message was 'celebrate your curves' rather than 'try and look thinner'.

I really like the section on his programme when he would get a woman to look at other women and try to pick the one nearest to their measurements (I'm presuming the women were happy to be there) - invariably they picked someone bigger than they actually were. It really stuck with me, the skewed perception we have of ourselves.

I think he's a nice bloke.

squizita · 28/07/2015 08:00

Spiderman I think the issue is exactly that - replacing thin with curves. Many women, even bigger ones, don't have thar "curve" look and rather than celebrating their bean/apple shape he forced them into a faux curve shape.
