Frumpy to fab for our anniversary - please help?!

Dh and I have a very rare opportunity to go out sans ds on Saturday for our anniversary, the last time we went out was Christmas time! I really want to look as good as I can.

I've lost a bit of weight recently but I still have a mum tum. I'm a size 14 pear (slightly smaller on top but busty). I have weird yellow toned skin, very dark brown pixie crop hair, and brown eyes. My budget is pretty low £40 if possible. I love 50's style and am described as a 'quirky Confused' dresser by friends. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it, I know I've left it very late in the day but shopping with ds is a nightmare.

Have you got something in your wardrobe you that fits and flatters? Anything at all? Wear that, or borrow from a friend.

Spend your £40 on eyebrows and a blow-dry or undo, paint your own nails. Anything over get a new lipstick. Focus on grooming rather than clothing.

If you have an outfit you like, then I agree with TheRealMary.

I always feel good about my appearance with my nails painted, hair done and a new lipstick.

Or new underwear? I can be wearing a sack and I'll feel like I'm super fancy if I have new matching underwear on.

You'll have a fantastic night whatever you wear. Eat, drink, have fun.

Lindybop have a good range of '50s style dresses in your price range (I particularly like their wiggle dresses).

Agree with getting your eyebrows done professionally - makes a huge difference to looking 'groomed'.

Thanks everyone for the tips - I already do spend fair bit on hair/make up/grooming. I have a couple of nice dresses but I wanted something he's not seen before (for a bargain price because I'm a spendaholic as dinner will be pricy.

I love Lindybop, I have a few of their dresses already. I'll have a quick shopping window while ds is with my mum tomorrow, so I'll have a scour.
