What Mysteriously happens between 49 and 50!

Another article today (this time from The Mail online) about how to dress at 50. Can someone please explain to me what mysteriously happens after leaving your 49th year? Do you suddenly have to dump your style and wear boring, stretchy, oddly patterned clothing?

I'll tell you in October when I turn 50 - just ordering my nice beige crimpolene trousers with the sewn in crease in preparation

In reality I expect I'll just keep wearing what I already wear!

Costacoffeeplease, I don't know why crimplene type fabric become de-rigueur at 50 either, but please hang fire on the order LOL. I'd like the brains (not sure this is the right word!) behind 50+ fashion to justify their choices and explain their thinking. We don't have 50+ men targetted in the same way they do women.

A lot changes. Your children start moving out and start to have more time for yourself and you start to have money again!

I'm in my 40s, so I haven't hit 50 yet but I find as I get older something is changing in my attitude to fashion - something freeing. If I feel like something looks good I'll wear it. If I feel like overdressing or under dressing for an occasion I will. I think what happens is confidence, knowing who you are and knowing what suits you.

I think I'll be be better dressed in my 50s than at any younger age.

burhishedsilver, I am not questionning the life experiences, but the fact that they seem to think their is a look, when I agree that how you dress is about how you feel and how it makes you feel.

It doesn't help that the photos are styled and posed like its a catalogue shoot from the 1960s.

Good grief hose outfits are very frumpy.

LOL! I turned 50 last year - soon to be 51, and I wouldn't be seen dead in those outfits! Frumpsterville.

I am 53 and don't dress any differently than I did 10 yrs ago ,those outfits are hideously frumpy.

I was looking at a group of elderly ladies today and wondering when I would start dressing like them..I can't see it ..ever.

One change I have made is i wear less makeup as makeup seems to age me now.

I'm 52 and those outfits are gopping! I wouldn't wear a single item on that page. Agree re. the styling; there's something outdated and ageing about her hairstyle as well.
I've pretty much stopped wearing over-the-knee skirts; I actually have good legs but something a bit scraggy starts to happen after 50 ime (or maybe that's just me). Don't judge anyone else who chooses to go short though.
Again, tiny shorts would be a no-no, although I'd have felt a fool in them anywhere but a beach/holiday resort even 25 years ago!

50 here - and yes, those outfits are truly vile. On the other hand it is nice to see Honor Blackman is still working and looking great for her age !

Blimey, I'm in my 50s and would class myself as the antithesis of fashionable but I wouldn't wear any of those!

They are frumpy - and even then, they still have arms showing in 4 out of 6 outfits! I am 47 and my upper arm looks like a pig's back. What 50-something wants to show their arms, apart from Marie Helvin?

Those look like the sort of outfits MIL wears and she's 75. I'm 49 on Sat and today I'm wearing shorts and a vest top (am on holiday) maybe I should try to make my hair wavy for some ageless elegance!

I have fabulous upper arms sticky hence the vest top which shows there isn't an over 50 style just a what suits your body shape style.

Ha! I turned 50 in May and today I'm wearing a skinny maxi dress, cropped denim jack (I've had this jacket for 20+ years) and converse. Should I change?

Bizarre article. It says "Marcelle D'Argy Smith models..." but that's not her, is it? Unless she's taken the facelifts to the extreme. The clothes are dreadful but, as it's the DM, I'm not surprised - they would like women to look like sexless 50s throwbacks.

Can I just point out that Marcelle D'Argy Smith is very, very, 50 plus - she is in fact nearly 80.

I'm 53. I have a 14-year-old and a 12-year-old. Today I am wearing jeans cut off at the knee and a white linen top.

I'm 51 and am being inundated with emails from "50 plus" - most of their clothes would look great on my mum who is 84!!

I'm 51, not particularly fashionable but definitely age appropriate, black ankle grazers, green silk vest top and leather jacket today (pissing with rain here). I wouldn't even glance at those clothes in a shop. They remind me of M&S classic collection. The styles look for much older women with big silver haired shampoo and set bouffants.
