Tipping hairdressers for idiots

OK, I've never figured this one out.

I get that you're supposed to tip.

What I don't get is how much and just how. As in when do I do it, who do I give it to, what do I say? And if I get a £30-40 wash and cut at a salon, how much tip?

Other option is a home hairdresser, they charge less does that mean you tip more or less or not at all as they keep all the money and can charge what they like in the first place?

I've been getting my hair cut at the kids hairdressers with the kids and just telling them to keep the change, and I'm not sure if that's even right - sometimes they've pressed me to take it anyway. Thinking I'd like to get a proper grown up cut now and I don't want to offend. Help oh wise ones!

I sometimes tip, but not always.

I only tip the junior who washes my hair if it has been a good hair wash and she has taken my friendly but minimal responses to her chatter to correctly mean that I'd like a few minutes peace!

ltk · 16/07/2015 16:39

I tip £10, which is a bit more than 10%. I leave £2 for the hairwasher. I give the tips to my stylist directly and ask her to pass the £2 on to the hairwasher.

silverglitterpisser · 16/07/2015 16:40

My colour n cut is £45, I always top up n give £50. I love the job my hairdresser does n she is cheaper than most which I also love so I just show ny appreciation.

SlightlyJadedJack · 16/07/2015 16:46

I pay £55 for a cut and blow dry and leave £5 tip.

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/07/2015 16:57

I tip my stylist £5 (wouldn’t tip if she owned the salon though) and I always tip the junior. Juniors only earn a shilling an hour.

RockDownToElectricAvenue · 16/07/2015 17:03

My last haircut cost forty quid and it took 45 minutes. The time before that I had an updo that took 20 minutes and that cost me thirty quid.

I didn't leave a tip.

Actually, I never tip anyone....

SinglePringle · 16/07/2015 17:19

Always tip my hairdresser £10 on top of a £100 cut and colour. He gives £5 to the junior.

I tip beauty therapists 15%.

And round up taxis to the nearest pound or next 50p if it's, say £5.80.

Judydreamsofhorses · 16/07/2015 18:12

I don't often tip, because I feel I pay a lot (£62 every six weeks) however I do always tip when I go for a free fringe trim between cuts and usually bring wine at Christmas.

thomashardon · 16/07/2015 18:39

I go every 10 weeks, and tip my hairdresser £5 (costs £35 for a wash, cut, blow dry). She always fits me in for a fringe trim at the five week mark, and I am so happy with my hair since I started seeing her. I'd happily pay more if I could!

ggirl · 16/07/2015 18:42

I used to tip ..before the last recession.
I paid £120 for cut and colour today , pay £52 for cut and blow dry .
I havent tipped in yrs.
If you don't tip it avoids the awkwardness ..and saves you money ..win win!!

I don't feel responsible for the juniors low wage.

Blueberrymuffint0p · 16/07/2015 18:52

I never tip,I pay £45 for an hours work-call me tight but I think that's pretty decent.

ThisOneAndThatOne · 16/07/2015 19:12

How come hair washers are not subject to minimum wage regulations?

CatMilkMan · 16/07/2015 19:21

cant you just tip normally? Shake the persons hand and say thank you and have a note folded in to a square in your hand?

catkind · 16/07/2015 19:24

Is that seriously how you do it catmilkman? I thought that was how you gave bribes! Not seen anyone shaking hands with their hairdresser...

I had a mobile stylist come today and I tipped her £10 because she was very good and cheap even though she is John Oliver trained with many years experience.

Usually I tip £5

I have had times where I haven't tipped at all though.

CatMilkMan · 16/07/2015 19:33

Absolutely, I already have some cash folded in my wallet and iPhone case just to be discreet.
Unless it's on Holliday and at the end of a tour or something that requires a large tip then I just say thanks for looking after us and give them cash.

dementedpixie · 16/07/2015 19:56

I just stick it on the counter if I decide to give any. no hiding it here

Outwith · 16/07/2015 20:01

I show my appreciation for my haircut by saying thank you and paying for it Blush. It's £45, which I think is pretty steep.

maybemyrtle · 16/07/2015 20:07

I'm so glad someone's asked this as I'm a bit lost too.

I get my hair cut at a salon academy, the stylists are fully qualified but it's like their CPD, they do an afternoon a month under the watchful eyes of senior staff to improve their techniques etc. So they have clients in their usual salons that pay £40+ for a cut and blow dry, but because it's in the academy I only pay £10. It takes ages, that's the catch!

So I tip them £10...I never know if that's a decent tip, or if, because I'm paying so little, I should tip more to balance it out?

Missanneshirley · 16/07/2015 20:20

my stylist is also the owner so that confuses me a little and I don't tip. Blush
haircut is £35 so I normally ask for the £5 to go to the girl who washed my hair. I noticed that they all had named tip jars under the till so it does go straight to the individual unlike in some bars etc

snowmummy · 16/07/2015 20:22

Don't and won't tip. I pay a small fortune for a cut and colour and that's enough. Sorry, but I don't earn enough!

PurpleDaisies · 16/07/2015 20:28

I don't tip either. I assume the price they're charging is what they expect to receive for a service they are offering at a cost that pays all the wages and makes them a profit.

CatMilkMan · 16/07/2015 21:19

I felt bad saying I tipped since I'm a guy and the same guy has cut my hair for the last 10 years, his price has gone up 50p a year to a whopping £17 for a wash dry and cut.
But I asked DP and she pays a ton at a big fancy place and she still tips. I hadn't thought about it for women before.

Doobigetta · 16/07/2015 21:26

I pay self-employed stylists around £50 for a cut and blow, and around £80 for foil highlights. No juniors or Saturday girls. Does anyone know roughly how much of those fees the stylists will keep, and how much will go to the salon owner?

TwinPiques · 16/07/2015 22:34

I pay £35ish for colour and about the same for the cut - I end up leaving £3 each for the colourist/stylist and a quid for the shampoo junior. But I completely COMPLETELY agree with posters saying, please charge me a fair price and don't make me guess how much your staff require to eat lunch.
