Best type of dresses for those with bigger stomach/ Apple shapes?

Sallystyle · 01/07/2015 22:06

I am looking for a few dresses.

I am a size 10 but I have bit too much fat on my stomach and saddlebags right now.

I am looking for something that flatters these areas or at least doesn't cling to them.

I never wear dresses but I want to start. I am also 5ft 1 so need something that won't make me look shorter.

Thank you in advance.

Empire lines look great if you are a) pregnant or b) skinny as fuck. Fit and flare is the way to go.

Are Skater dresses the same as Fit and Flare?

I'm not usually an apple, but I'm postnatal so currently am!

I disagree that skater / fit and flare type dresses are good - they draw attention to your flaw!

Styles that skim your tummy much better especially if you're a size 10 overall - show off your slim shoulders and legs by having a short dress in a tunic or swing style. Not necessarily empire line but certainly fitted around the shoulders and bust and more floaty around the middle and bum.

I like the Hush Astrid one linked and the Asos cocoon one. Finery London also have a cocoon one in their sale.

Drop waist dresses are also flattering for big tums.

Empire line is a godawful suggestion. You will look 5+ months pregnant.

Damn right, empire line is the worst for apple shapes!

abearcalledpaddington · 06/07/2015 20:56

I like empire line dresses and i would say i am an apple, although i have very large boobs so i think that balances it out, if you have big tummy small boobs then it might well make you look pregnant!

Iatemyskinnyperson · 06/07/2015 22:25

I always end up in shift styles. Can't wear a structured waist. Just bought this very Flattering

Chillywhippet · 06/07/2015 22:29

I'm curvy and petite and can't do too smocky/too many gathers but a dress with high ish waistband is good as it is slimmest at the bottom of your ribs and skims tummies.

You don't say how old you are so sorry if these are too middle aged but the shapes might be helpful

White stuff dress. You may not like pattern but nice shape:

Nearly all these mantaray dress have high ish waists

mantary at debenhams

This was really flattering on me. I was surprised.

Fat face always have similar shapes too. Anywhere that caters for mummy tummies/hips!

Chillywhippet · 07/07/2015 07:42

Also obvious really but petite ranges can really help as waist in right place, sleeves shorter and dresses shorter can look nicer and in proportion.
Dorothy Perkins, Top Shop, M&S etc.

Sallystyle · 07/07/2015 08:08

I love so many of those Mantary dresses! Thank you. I think I want them all Grin

I am going to go into debenhams and try some on at some point.

I am 34.

Thanks again for everyones help.

I have the opposite problem - I'm 5'8" and long waisted so pretty much everything looks empire waisted on me, even when its not!

I've started to realise I may have to avoid anything with a stitched waist, for like, forever. Oh well.....
