Have just had straight flicky shoulder length hair cut into sleek bob.....except it's not. Previously straight hair has sudennly got manic waves and currently look like wild woman, and sticks out all over the place. Bad hair MONTH. Advice on very cheap but very good hair straightners needed.

Ok what hair products do you use first of all?

fizzbuzz · 16/11/2006 08:14

Mousse to make it have more volume, and smoothing stuff on top of that. Hair is not fizzy at all, it's quite smooth, but has developed wave all round one side, so hair culs under at one side, and curls out at the other. Totally random

Ta very much. Will try and face Argos when feeling brave...or may get them delivered.
As a side issue why why do Argos always try and sell those pathetic warranty things. Bought ds a cheap (and I mean cheap) watch, and Argos tried to sell me one of those warranty things that cost more than the watch!

fizz - my hair tends to go curly ( a drop of moisture in teh air and look like a bush!) i slap on hair serum as soon as i towel dry it and get the hair dryer on it as soon as possible. i have bought one of those brushes with bristles that clamp together with the ait between which work great. they were about £4 in boots. after i dry it - the straighteners go on. i use vidal sassoon ones - about £25 from argos. i give it a good straightening and leave it for a while. then i whack some mouse on a brush and use the brush and teh straighteners at the same time.

hope that helps!!

Can you use them on wet hair? I have very stubborn hair that will only respond to steam heated curling tongs. Normal tongs don't touch it. Is it the same with straighteners?
Why do you put mousse on brush? I'm sure these are very simple questions, but I am new to the whole experience!
My hair doesn't frizz when damp, it just goes limp.

Get some Bumble and Bumble does it all spray and a fine comb, invest in some GOOD straighteners like GHD's and some decent finishing spray/shine spray, after blow drying, leave some moisture in the hair. Straighten section by section and when you have finished blast it with cold air from the hairdryer. I have curly hair but noone would believe it - well after years of straightening I am pretty good at it now!!!! Also if you have had your hair cut shorter it has less weight in it and waves seem to be increased!!! Good luck x

Please dont use them on wet hair, it will totally ruin your barnet!!!

fizzbuzz · 16/11/2006 11:10

What is Bumble and Bumble? And where do you get it from? This is a whole new learning experience for me! Are those hair sraighteners hideously expensive?
I had this damn hairstyle as I thought it would be low maintainence, as have baby dd. Currently most difficult hairstyle I have ever had. (except
mohican in 80's, but lets not go there!)

fizz - i use mousse on a brush as it tends to calm those wee fly away hairs!

and i agree - dont use them on wet hair - you will scorch the heck out of it!

the key as longlegs says - is to focus on wee sections.
good luck - off to do mine now

I admit that after 3 pairs of cheap straighteners I gave in and added GHD's to my xmas list and it is the best thing I ever did!
Try using Charles Worthington Stay Smooth Straightening Iron Protection Spray. Costs about £4 but lasts ages (and I have quite long hair so use more than you would). You just spray it on each section before you run the straighteners over and it protects that hair and helps it go straight easier. Have tried cheaper alternatives and they don't work nearly as well!

Mousse on brush? Is this whilst blow drying, or when brushing prior to straightening?

I get mine from my hairdressers, its pricey bout £16 for a huge can but it lasts for ages and ages. You have to see what works best for your hair. AFter spending a fortune on hair products both cheaper and expensive I have to confess I have stuck with the more expensive stuff purely cos it works for my hair. Sebastian products are fab too but again they are pricey. Try www.HQhair.com it has some good deals on GHD's at the moment, and they come with a couple of freebies too! Its worth investing in a good shampoo and conditioner too, again after years of testing I have finally found ones that work. And its the sebastian stuff - from the hairdressers. Theres a reason they use these products and your hair always looks fab when you leave there! You can achieve the same results, you just need to practice with your irons!!!! x
