Can you dress teen dd for me ?!!!

Hello Smile

Dd1 has asked me if I can get her some new clothes for our summer holiday and for next weekend (she is - in her words - unable to dress herself!). We are going to Europe for a month, not on a package type thing and next weekend she is going to a party and a day out.

Ideally she would like;
-new bikini - BIG boobs so always a struggle

  • new dresses

-some new shorts/skirts
  • tops

-and things to wear in the evening when to too warm for a jumper but too cold for nothing
-general holiday wear

She is a size 14 (quite overweight) and about 5"5. In her words, she would like clothes to make her look slimmer and minimise her bust - we have had a problem with attention from older guys Sad

She wants quite fashionable clothes as she says she always feels frumpy around her friends (size 6, blondes)

She is almost 16.

Could I have some advice please and maybe a few links?

TIA X

also.. username does need to be updated but don't know how Grin not appropriate for summer !

All very well asking you to get her clothes, but she' ll need to try them on. Does she not enjoy shopping?
I'd take her to wherever is your nearest big mall, either early at a weekend or week day late, and actually walk around a few shops to see what appeals. Then take loads into a fitting room and try it on, to start eliminating what doesn't suit.
Start somewhere cheapish with a lot of choice , like H &M , to get ideas re colours and shapes. I wouldn't bother with M&s, way too frumpy for a teenager.
My 17 year vold niece likes River Island and Top Shop.

New look bikinis aren't bad for chap ones, and bra stop had some cup size ones in the sale.

Gap had some nice little dresses if she suits a high waist- I don't! And some nice shorts in the sale too.

Coloured cropped jeans 50s style might suit her- I saw some ££ ones in crew but bet they have similar elsewhere?

A maxi skirt is a good cover up if chillier- or sunburnt- a fitted jersey one is more flattering than a fuller one.

Thick soled flip flops give a sneaky bit if extra height!

That uniqlo dress is nice but the chest pockets might not be good on a big bust!

If you get her one nice properly fitted bikini top she can mix and match with cheaper bottoms. Last year on holidays I noticed very few teens wearing matching tops and bottoms.

Good tip further down the thread - go to the Mall if you have one at 5pm on a weekday... me and DD went to Bluewater last night - arrived at 6pm... was empty, no queues in the changing rooms, very pleasant experience compared to a Saturday.

Thanks ladies ! Will try and get to Trafford centre at some point but may not be able to, so will order online first.

Would maxis make her look slimmer or the opposite? She's a bit body conscious Hmm

I would go for a jersey vest top shaped maxi dress in grey or white. H&M or primark. No stripes, not good if you're feeling 'big'. Get a couple of these, a stack of cheap/cool bangles, cute sandles and different bags/necklaces to mix and match.

Denim or other short shorts, teAmed with vest tops, boohoo.com have some cool embellished ones, one with lots of fringing round the hem would be nice. Those flat gladiator sandles that lace up your leg and big sun glasses. Very on trend.

Asda usually do good and bigger sized swim stuff. Go for one pattern and 2 plain in complimenting colours and you can mix them. Throw on a kimono jacket on top and she's covered up. Add a belt and a pair of shorts. That's an outfit.

I'd take -
2 day jersey dresses
4 shorts
4 vest tops
Playsiut
1 dresser top
High waisted jeans with a couple of crop t- shirts
Kimono jacket
Hoodie
Sandles
Vans

Personally I think maxis are fattening. Just too much fabric. I'm not a dainty flower myself.

denim jacket for cool evenings? Can be very good over a bust.

maybe a second hand/vintage one, or a little stretch in it like this one

If she is confident about size, you can often get good value bikinis on Figleaves. I am a FF / G cup (depending on brand) and have got some great swimwear on there and although not particularly overweight, I do find a good bikini top with decent support makes the most of my figure. If she's a bit overfat in the hip area (I am), I also find the boy short options are great. I'm 34, so might not be totally up to speed with teen fashion, but I've seen plenty young folk wearing them and they look great, without being granny pants.

I'd be careful with maxis too. (BTW, obvs you DD can wear what she likes, but this is on the basis she's a bit self-conscious and I've been there.). SuperDry do a lot of cotton maxis - they're super comfy but one season only. They are great if you're pear shaped / hourglass, but utterly unforgiving if apple.

Hate to focus on weight / size, but purely because I've been there, consider thigh chafe. If not an issue for your daughter then great, but I merrily went o Capri one year in a skirt I'd have worn in the UK on a nicer day (5', size 8-10) and was miserable walking about in the heat. DP had to nip to a chemist to get me an anti-chafing cream from some pharmacist who apparently suffered the same problem! Point being, if chafing an issue, consider light trousers or 3/4 length. Shorts are fine, but again, if large of thigh they can ride up.

If you aren't going to walk about lots, completely ignore me Grin

I think, and feel free to ignore me, that dresses that hang from neck with no sleeves rather than strappy dresses showing upper chest, are more flattering on someone of a certain size and body shape (of which myself and my DD are two!).

This is an example - whenever I put on something like this I immediately think "yes" and DD is the same - we are similar size and often nick each other's tops.... here

DD has spent many a time getting stressed and upset in changing rooms but now we know what suits her, we are immediately drawn to that style and shape and work with her curvy figure. I have told her, you have what you are given, love yourself, and one day hopefully this will sink in. She is now 16 and is beginning to accept herself the way she is. Her BFF is a size 6, petite girl so they are poles apart from BFF wishes she had more curves and DD wishes she had less .... you can't win but you have to work quite hard to find your style but when you do ! happy days...

My other tip is order a ton of stuff from a catalogue, free delivery, try on at home which is always easier then she will get more of an idea of what suits her.

Definitely ASOS. She could pretty much get her whole wardrobe from there and they do great bikinis in cup sizes. I'm also 32G and get all my bikinis from there.

For £9.99, you get free next day delivery for a year and also courier returns so you don't have to go to the post office etc. Quite useful if you want to order lots in various sizes and styles for her to try on.

Also look online at the next kids wear. Basics are cheaper than the adults and go up to age 16. I find next come up fairly big so should fit her still. Also there vest tops with wider straps are great value in the adult section. Fab with skater or maxi skirts and denim shorts etc.

Honestly if you can't afford a bravissimo bikini as well as the rest just get the bikini top and everything else from primark!

My 16 yr old is similar but teeny back as well. She can get holiday basics ok in primark but cheap swimwear just embarrassed her and would attract more adverse attention I reckin.

Elder dd isn't teeny and had a lovely skirted swimsuit from devenhams ( she looks 50s cute, I'd look like grandma init)
