Inspired by the other thread on long hair vs short hair, I'm wondering what a mum cut is? Pictures please!

Sam Cam? Yes I'd say she has a mum cut - it's just a bit nothingy.

just wanting to avoid slumping into mum style, nastiness is in your interpretation.

No, nastiness is applying negative qualities to the term "mum" and maybe then posting examples and laughing at women who have hair like that.

In my world 'mum hair' is hair that hasn't seen a hairdresser for 3months or more!

I used to have mum hair - it's curly and i had a few shorter layers round my face and it went from long bob to shoulder length between cuts.

I now have an actual style - graduated bob, still curly but now with a definite shape and silhouette and needs cut every 8weeks. I feel soooo much better :)

I think really we are asking what is frumpy, no? I am finding this quite interesting as it happens. But I agree with you soup dragon- and I would've thought assigning negative qualities to mums, particularly on mn is fairly off. What is mum style and why woukd you want to avoid that? Mum style is basically someone who has children. Can you imagine if a man said you had a 'mum cut'?!

But as you were because I was genuinely finding the discussion about what is frumpy interesting. Fwiw (not much) I think it is to do with the whole style and not just the hair.

Just read back. Perhaps projecting as I feel frumpy as hell and I can see museumum has a different interpretation. Ignore me!

Interesting.

There's a Pinterest Board (or a link to one) which describes this exactly.

Apparently, it's anything above chin length which is too 'done' and is a bit 'poufy' on the crown. Like this:

There are also sub-sets (depending on where you live) with varying degrees of bright colours and stripy highlites.

I suppose the opposite of a mum cut would be something wild and flowing, or maybe a shaved side/undercut.

I haven't been to a hairdresser for over 20 years!

Noddyholder do you cut it yourself? Or do you have long mermaid waves of hair? Twenty years is impressive the longest I managed was about 18 months!

I hate that browny red obviously dyed look that I have but can't get rid of without dying it very dark I think it's frumpy/everyone seems to have it. Over summer I'm thinking of going white or ash blonde that wouldn't be mumsy??

Or frumpy. Whichever word we're using now Wink

So that's just about every style and length of hair described as mums on this thread. Skinhead anyone? ????

My personal style nemesis is Pat Butcher- it will happen to me one day, I know. I'd be interested in pinterest link if you have it?

No mermaid waves i cut it myself!

Gilbert I wasn't talking about hair cuts, but about how adding "mum" to things suggests they are unadventurous and boring (mum hair, mum jeans, mum car, mum job etc).

Ah I wish I had the nerve to do that. I hate the hairdressers. Been looking at the velaterapia (Brazilian candle cutting) as they just burn off your split ends. I have a stepmother and half sister in Rio but the flight cost a bit steep for some charred hair!

I am currently growing out a very short inverted bob AND haven't been near any hair dye for best part of a year so my hair is also silver. I guess I have a mum cut then

Would this look awful on a 'normal' person?

What is a mum cut?

Jessie - that would look awful, as if you CBA to condition it and let your toddler hack at your long hair...

I think SamCam has mum hair - not exactly a style but can be tied back easily

Whenever there is any discussion about what's 'mum' or frumpy there is rarely any consideration on what actually suits an individual. I have very curly hair so some of these non-frumpy styles would be a complete horror on me or just impossible.

It's like deriding the boot leg an worshipping the skinny when skinny jeans make people with short legs look bloody awful.

I don't think has much to do with the actual cut tbh. It had to do with the whole package, that being your clothes , the way you are in your body. What looks rather dull on one woman might look great on another.
My hair is very thick and straight . I had a short bob for ages, now growing vigour. I have it cut every couple of months. I look at styles in magazines but know in reality my hair wouldn't ever look like that .

Ah but mabel curly hair is fabulous and doesn't need a style as such - Ive actually thought about getting a perm like I had as a teenager.
