Skirted leggings - would you?

Is this a huge fail? I'm being seriously tempted by the navy and grey leggings with the built in straight mini skirt here

I'm thinking a nice top and ballet flats for the summer. Have I lost my mind?

I'm a size 12, but not hefty and I've got nice legs Smile

I see your point but I have tried leggings under a dress when it's been a bit cooler and I think it looks nice. And it's practical.

In fact, I was on the site to get some regular navy and grey leggings for under dresses.

I think the straight ones look nice as long as they are worn with flat shoes.

GoodToesNotSoGoodToes · 17/06/2015 09:49

Get a straight one for casual.

squizita · 17/06/2015 09:51

If you like the look why not buy a skirt or two you could dress down with leggings or up with tights? Twice the use! Grin That would be my main objection really - like sewn together shirts with tanks I never "get" hybrid clothes.

Round here (an affluent and trendy end of London with a fair share of more mature women too) leggings over a dress or skirt for casual is quite often seen. Depending on dress and shoes it need not look 90s and is a thousand times nicer than a fucking Boden tunic and leggings though I've no doubt broken mn code by saying this.

LettuceLaughton · 17/06/2015 09:53

I wouldn't wear them 'cause it's just not my style but there's no difference, looks wise, between them and leggings with a stretchy mini, is there?

TBH I'd be thrilled if the thin-leggings-with-short-top-and-pants-on-view brigade moved over to these instead.

squizita · 17/06/2015 09:53

Oh and I wear a floppy tartan skirt with leggings. Having said that I did go to drama school Grin So that might explain it...

squizita · 17/06/2015 09:56

...3rd post.

Just had to say - skirt shape in the OP is not great but 100% not 90s. 90s would be a line or straight with split sides like a pinny. The leggings would be more yoga pant style, looser at tge ankle.

50ShadesOfSummer · 17/06/2015 10:05

I'm with squizita. If you like this look then why not buy leggings (available everywhere in loads of colours, lengths) and separate minis (again, wide selection) and do it yourself? Cheaper and more flexible.

Having said that, I do think this look (like the tunic and and leggings) is a bit dated now and not terribly smart. I'm currently going with opaque tights (some footless) as an alternative to leggings. (Although, no doubt these are a fashion faux pas to some.)

formidable · 17/06/2015 10:31

What's the difference between footless tights and leggings though?

I get the point about buying a separate skirt and getting twice the wear.

I own very few skirts actually. Maybe this is an avenue I could explore....

Yes there is a major difference - from someone who often sports this admittedly marmite look Blush - with separates, you can NEVER get exactly the same shade of especially black leggings/mini. Also a problem with grey. Two tone black really puts this look in the unacceptably casual scruff category (yes I KNOW that for some, it is already there!)

I might buy the black for this reason alone!

ChilliAndMint · 17/06/2015 10:45

I think they are quite nice, not a new thing. Skirt could be awkward to iron.

formidable · 17/06/2015 10:46

I wasn't planning on ironing leggings!!

Summer dresses get ironed if they look particularly ragged coming out of the dryer. Nothing else Blush

ChilliAndMint · 17/06/2015 10:50

I meant the skirt part, the flippy ones..

NashvilleQueen · 17/06/2015 10:55

If you like them give it a whirl. I don't think they are sufficiently controversial to warrant extreme hatred. At worst I could possibly muster up a meh. For a casual day outfit that's comfortable and easy to wear they seem find to me.

Dunno, really. Tights just seem smarter to me and footless ones stop my feet getting too hot in this "almost-Summer"!

As regards matching, I'd probably go for a contrasting colour between skirt and leggings, tights.

formidable · 17/06/2015 10:58

I find cotton leggings a bit cooler and more comfortable. I've never liked the whole crotch thing that tights have going on.

No no no

TheOriginalWinkly · 17/06/2015 11:07

This look screams 'ice skater' to me.

I thought footless tights were thin and had a gusset, whereas leggings are thicker (often not much thicker) and gusset-less?

Gusset is an awful word.

RoobyTuesday · 17/06/2015 11:08

Well it doesn't look much different to someone wearing a dress or tunic over leggings surely? Personally I'm not a fab of leggings and don't wear dresses or tunics with them so these wouldn't be for me but I can't really understand the outrage!! There are women wearing skirts/dresses/tunics over leggings all over the place, it's not an unusual look!

ScrewFix · 17/06/2015 11:14

I'd wear it to the gym possibly...

deadwitchproject · 17/06/2015 11:25

The flared skirt with leggings looks a bit clownish to me. Having said that I've not seen it on anyone in real life so it may look ok.

hugoagogo · 17/06/2015 13:18

They are a whole lot better than see through leggings, I thought the nineties were back anyway?

I wander around clothes shops lately goggling at the stuff I last saw on Sabrina the teenage witchShock

VanillaTwirl · 17/06/2015 13:30

Lol, I've seen some young girls/women starting to wear this look again!

I was also a 90s adopter of such style (was in my early 20s at the time).
It's been like stepping back in time to my favourite memories recently Grin

I like it actually, with the straight skirt - although I actually think an A-line mini is more flattering overall.
I wouldn't mix separates, that can get too bulky with different waistbands.
