I've never worn lipstick before and I want to start

After 2 years of having braces as an adult they're finally off! I'm having my teeth whitened next week and I'd really like to buy a lipstick to celebrate. For as long as I can remember I've been self conscious of my smile,I've never worn lipstick just lip balm.

I just don't know where to start with lipsticks,it's all new to me. I've got naturally pale skin but I use a gradual tanner, blue eyes and light brown hair. I'd like something that doesn't feel heavy or gloopy, that lasts a good few hours, nothing high end and nothing too bright-I think I'll build up to that. I still feel like I've got bucked teeth at the moment!

Can anyone help please?

Get yourself to a make up counter!

Hi muffin, with lipstick I find you can get a lot more life out of the big brands if you prepare your lips first. My mum showed me how to do this when I was a teenager and I've never regretted it! All you have to do is get a stick of butter and gently rub it over your lips, then smudge it up with your fingers before applying the lipstick. It doesn't smell and makes everything work much better. Try it out yourself!

Max factor have a lovely new lipstick/tint/balm out that you can build up. I bought one on a whim the other day as I struggle with lipstick dryin my lips out and not lasting very long and I love this stuff. I'm going to buy it in a different colour tomorrow :-)

I've just discovered the Bourjois lip crayons They give a subtle colour and respond to your natural lip tint so don't be put off by their seemingly garish colours!

Fantastic, thanks for the suggestions-I'm going to boots later so I'll try the bourjois and Max factor ideas.

Bourjois for sure.

Or treat yourself - clinique are good for colour that's not too in your face.

If you have a local Avon lady ... I love their mid price lippies.

Op I've been trying out lipstick too at the grand age of 58! Most brands are just too full on for my liking - I feel like I'm 4 years old and raiding my mum's make up bag. But I like Burts Bees lip shimmer which is basically a lip balm with just a hint of colour. It doesn't last that long but then neither has any other brand I've tried.

I'd start with a tinted lip balm. If you don't mind going spendy the Clarins ones are lovely and give a sheer, flattering wash of colour.

Start gently with a lightweight/sheer formula (you can normally tell from the shelf description or name which ones these would be), and a shade that is similar to your natural lip (such as a pinky-brown).

Revlon lip butter in 'pink truffle' is lovely, easy to wear, a 'my lips but better' shade and moisturising.
