I know it's been said before-but why oh why are dresses with bloody sleeves so bloody elusive?

I know there are dresses with sleeves out there but they are in the minority- you have to scour T'internet and even them it's often slim pickings.

I know there are some sites that sell some dresses with sleeves, but what I don't understand is why, in winter is it all sleeveless party dresses that require a cardigan? and why in summer is it all sleeveless summer dresses that require a cardigan? and don't get me started on cap sleeves which are designed to maximize arm flab.

Maybe I'm stuck in the 90s but I don't get it. A woman either has to show her biffa bacon arms off or spend extra on a cardigan or bolero which in turn adds bulk, OR you have to look in the over 50s catalogue and buy something with an ugly big print all over it that makes you look like you're going to work on your day off.

Even the plus size shops have sleeveless and strappy dresses in sizes that go up to 30. I have never met a woman with large arms who loves to show them off.

I'm just sick of searching and sick of companies making so very few, like its a speciality request or something.

I think that someone who hates women sent a memo to all dress manufacturers saying that nobody wants sleeves anymore so please don't make them.

Sewing an elasticated waist is a skill I must learn as well then I could alter some tunics with sleeves I already have to make them more flattering

Jessie - go for it ! My friend makes all hers now . She used an old sheet as a mock up so didn't feel afraid to make mistake ! She used Tilly and the buttons book and blog .

JessiePinkman · 30/05/2015 16:58

Oo that's a good idea to use a sheet as practice. Thanks !

While we're talking sleeves, has anyone else found sleeves are really narrow at the moment? I'm a 10-12 but have chunky arms (and thighs!) but a relatively narrow torso.

If I find something nice to fit me on the body, you can guarantee its too tight in the arms. Jackets and blazers are the worst for this.

I like sleeves as I'm a bit nesh and even in the middle of a British summer I prefer a nice dress with sleeves. I have a July wedding to attend and I really don't want to have to have a cardigan which generally on me spoil a dress completely.

I keep an eye on just last season
You can filter on 'dresses with sleeves', I look out for the Kaliko and occasional Planet jersey dresses (the other brands aren't my cuppa) and there's often great bargains to be had.

Megan - yes, although I'm not quite at the bingo wing stage I still find it hard to get my arms in quite a few sleeves Sad

King Tut Sorry for late reply [Wingz www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-3-4-Length-WingZ-Shrug-UK-size-6-8-10-12-14-16-18-20-22-24-26-28-W064-/251539608799?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item3a90edd4df] you wear them under the dress

I would like sleeves and dresses made of cotton not some viscose at £40

MissBattleaxe · 31/05/2015 12:12

I would like to be able to buy dresses with sleeves without having to look on websites like it's specialist clothing or some such.
