Shall I get my colours 'done'?

I have name changed so I can include my location to ask for recommendations.

I feel stuck in a style rut, hate shopping and not feeling good about my clothes. I am thinking of have my colours and body shape done.

I am confused about house of colour/colour me beautiful/john lewis/kettle well colours. I have heard that colour me beautiful are not as good but their web site is better and their prices are clearly displayed. Kettle well is near me but I don't think they do body shape. Can anybody recommend someone or offer advice? I live in Newcastle.

Thanks so much Bumble that's really helpful. Might treat myself...

It's an interesting experience but don't do it thinking it will be an automatic confidence boost, it wasn't for me. I was distraught that many of my "best" colours were either massively out of fashion or I hated. And the brown "neutral" lipstick was horrifying on me (I am apparently an autumn). I still wear plenty of black which I love, it was interesting to see cream vs white being better for me. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the experience but I do know some people who have got an awful lot out of it.

To be clear I did house of colour.

How do you know if they have your colour palette correct?

Yika · 02/06/2015 23:09

It'll be correct if you find you look good in the colours.

I did it with HoC about 7 years ago, enjoyed the colour session so much I went back for style too.

Such great value and a fun day out.

I mix colours now with total confidence knowing they are all in my palette.

I love yellow but would never have worn it because I didn't think it suited me. Now I know which shade (and there's only one, very pale, in my range) wear it a lot and am so delighted!

I still refer to my colour palette and style book frequently.

Had my colours done - I'm an autumn, i have concluded that i have cool toned skin, so with cool colours - charcoal grey being the worst, my skin looks cold and grey. But the other extreme is mustard which gives me a jaundiced look....so when I wear warm deep tones my skin tone looks more alive, but many of the shades in my autumn palate were horrible...I discovered a few gems and now i wear more colour - deep colours....I'd probably say it was worth it but just don't be a slave to it.

I did it at Christmas and think if you are reasonably interested in clothes but not one of those amazing people that gets it right constantly, you will save the money back quite quickly. I was initially distraught as I hated my colours (bright spring, I wanted muted autumn!) but five months on it's been so useful. Underwear is a great place to start with buying bright colours that you're not used to - I thought I hated and despised yellow, but bought an ivory and yellow Elle macpjerson bra at 70% off - totally gorgeous colour for me. I think as well you can do it gradually - just moving from black and white to navy and cream with tan leather bag is so flattering for me. Also have had tons of compliments since 'moving over' - more about looking well than anything else. Finally, what did it for me was seeks the effect on the ladies I did it with - they were honestly transformed, it was all quite emotional by the end! In that one lady had had quite a hard time recently and was heavier than she wanted to be and you could just see she was in this greige-wearing cycle of self loathing and by the end she was bobbing off cheerfully to buy a couple of winter scarves etc in colours that really changed how she looked.

More feedback after a week or two has passed. I wish I had done it sooner!

I am ebaying my old clothes off like crazy (interestingly I have loads that I rarely wore, so I guess at some level I knew they didn't suit me but I kept making the same purchasing mistakes!). I think one thing I have been guilty of is seeing something on another person, and wanting to copy it, with no regard for whether those particular colours suited me. Now I don't try to mimic anyone else (well it's only been few weeks), I just try to pick things that should suit me.

It's also tonnes easier when you walk into a shop because you can make a beeline for the colours (and then styles) that should suit you, rather than the endless/pointless browsing that I had grown to hate over the last few years. And slowly my wardrobe is starting to look more 'together', as the new things (and the old things I can salvage because they happen to be right) all co-ordinate well together because they are based on the same palette of colours. I always wanted a capsule wardrobe and hopefully I am heading in the right direction now. I am also hoping to reduce drastically the number of things I own, the reasoning being that everything should be mix-and-matchable so I won't need that many items to be able to form different outfits. It's is liberating clearing stuff out and envisaging a much reduced but far more wearable wardrobe.

I did HoC and has made me a very picky but also a very speedy shopper. I can walk in the door, look round and just go 'Nope' and walk out again. Alternatively I feel more confident spending more on individual items sometimes because I know I will wear and wear and wear them. And I ruthlessly return anything to mail order companies that isn't quite right....

I have booked an appointment for next week! eeek! I am a little nervous about it. Not totally sure why though. I am so set in my ways, mainly wear black and have a fairly plain but reliable wardrobe but I have recently lost weight and I really don't want to waste money on the wrong clothes (which I do, far too often!). I need some more cheerful colours! I am happy to report back if anyone is interested in how I get on?

Yika · 11/06/2015 19:45

Yay! Yes please report back!

kavv0809 · 11/06/2015 19:54

Yes! Very interested do report back.
