Bolero style cardigans - In or out?

Valsoldknickers · 22/05/2015 21:02

Usual story - I like to keep my arms covered but am just wondering if these cardigans are still in or are they out of fashion? I'm thinking of something along the lines of the 'Carrie' one from Hobbs as shown here.

If they're an S&B no no what is an acceptable alternative please? Looking forward to your opinions, thank you!

Very grumpy. Went to a wedding recently and no one under 60 was wearing one. Lots of bolero/ bolero style cardis were worn by the oldies. Don't do it. Plenty of lovely jackets it there.

Kelly1814 · 23/05/2015 18:54

Out, out out!!! When were they ever in?!? They are hideous.

Lucy61 · 23/05/2015 18:54

Frumpy not grump!

I recently bought this and it's lovely. Can be worn with lots of diff things.

MamaLazarou · 23/05/2015 20:04

Bit grannyish IMO, sorry.

cococandyfloss · 23/05/2015 20:13

I wear cropped cardi's with either peplum tops or with certain style dresses-those that are saying to wear jackets instead ...that would make me look so much bigger. In a cropped cardi (not a bolero style one though) You can see my waist and sillouette so its a lot more flattering.

LynetteScavo · 23/05/2015 20:15

They are probably out, as I one one in every colour, to go with various Monsoon dresses.

But then, what else do you wear over a dress at UK wedding?

StatisticallyChallenged · 23/05/2015 20:19

Agree Cococandyfloss. I quite like fuller skirt/fit and flare/fifties type cuts (I have big hips, big boobs, and a relatively small waist) but they look awful with longer jackets over them as they don't sit properly. And my waist gets lost.

I have several like this - I tend to wear them unfastened but on me they're really flattering. They accentuate my waist rather than hiding it.

The shape of the one OP linked is possibly a little dated - I have a couple of fluffy ones in that shape which are ok but combined with a plain knit it's a little dull - but I don't think short cover ups are a blanket no.

Lucy61 · 23/05/2015 21:07

Lunettes- you wear a light jacket. See link

LynetteScavo · 23/05/2015 22:36

But the trouble is, my mother in her '70s would wear a jacket like that.

I know they've probably come full circle, but I'm definitely getting a Country Casuals vibe.

There are some nice dresses with coats on the Monsoon website, but I have no wedding invitation, and even if I did I'm not sure if I'd want to spend over £300 on one outfit.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 23/05/2015 23:37

I don't think anything in Monsoon can possibly be 'in', can it? If you're bothered at all about being 'in', that is.
I was surprised to see boleros when I was in Hobbs theother day; I'm with whoever said: 'I've recently decided not to buy any more sleeveless or short sleeve things. Don't know if I'll stick to it but that's the plan!.' But I'm over 50. Make of that what you will. Smile.

bblondemoment · 23/05/2015 23:38

Cropped cardies - totally different kettle of fish than boleros , look fab with wiggle dresses, pencil skirts etc x

Valsoldknickers · 23/05/2015 23:51

Thanks so far! Just wondering if anyone has a link to cropped cardigans (preferably without buttons)?

I initially posted because I was suspicious of bolero style veering towards frumpy. I am interested in every day wear (not occasion wear), because of the fact I am not happy with my arms.

I find cardigans hard to get right and appreciate your views.

I'm not sure I've seen any cardigan shaped ones without buttons, but I have lots from fever London in similar shapes to the one linked upthread and great plains do some too.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 24/05/2015 09:24

Hobbs cropped cardigans usually fit well.
Also LK Bennet, but I haven't looked there recently.

SevenEleven · 24/05/2015 09:34

I've just bought one to wear over a 50's style dress. Cropped cardies like the one in one of the links look awful on me as I have a long torso, jackets never fit as I have broad shoulders long arms and no bust, and those kimonos have been done to death, so I'm left with the option of a shrug/bolero cardi. I may not be stylish, but at least I won't look like a man in a woman's jacket!!

NeitherHereOrThere · 24/05/2015 09:41

Frumpyville - esp if you have large shoulders/boobs.

Cropped cardigans are much better - there are loads at Boden.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/05/2015 10:01

Body proportion plays a huge part - I'm short waisted so a lot of cardigans shown as cropped come to the top of my hips which looks awful. I need a short crop - but I can see why on someone like SevenEleven that would look like you'd put on a toddler's cardigan Grin

Runningupthathill82 · 24/05/2015 10:11

I have a long torso and, on me, boleros are the most unflattering thing I could wear. They cut me off just below the bust and make me look a v odd shape indeed.

SevenEleven · 25/05/2015 13:16

StatisticallyChallenged Grin that's exactly what I look like in them!!

I think this thread shows that what looks good on some people looks awful on others. Just go with what suits you and you'll look much better than if you are trying to follow fashions that just don't flatter your shape.

StatisticallyChallenged · 25/05/2015 14:22

I once sent DH upstairs for one of my cropped cardis, and he somehow came back with one of (then 4 year old) DDs cardis instead! BlushGrin

SevenEleven · 25/05/2015 16:09

Grin brilliant!!

Valsoldknickers · 25/05/2015 16:32

Because of sizeable norks the crew neck short cardigans look very matronly on me. They make me feel huge!

I am not tall enough to wear a lot of the longer styles favoured here either.

Jackets are too formal / restrictive for every day around the house wear.

Thank you to StatisticallyChallenged, had a look at Great Plains (never saw their clothing before) and I am going to give their Festival Nights cardigan a whirl Smile

I never button mine up - if I do (especially in a good bra) it can be a bit "here are my boobs, my ass will be along later!"

I'd love to never have to wear cardigans but my office alternates between oven and igloo so if I go sleeveless I freeze at some point, but often long sleeved dresses wind up being too hot.
