Where do you shop in your 30's?

TopShop, New Look, River Island, et al seem too young for me/my "style."

I'd like to buy some nice quality pieces that hold up better, hold their shape, etc. instead of buying super cheap items so I can have more stuff.

I'm on a budget though, so some of the expensive chains are out. I'd like to take 6 months and spend £50-100/month until I've built up a solid, interchangeable (capsule?) wardrobe. Jeans that can be worn any season, layers for when it's colder, etc.

I work from home and do a fair amount of walking for school runs, and meet friends for coffee and toddler group, that kind of thing.

Where should I try?

h & m is excellent for plain classic styles that aren't frumpy

Hi,

I'm 37 and a size 12/14 sahm. Most of my clothes are from Mango, Asos or Peacocks. Occasionally Debenhams but that tends to be brands like Oasis for going out clothes. I also have quite a bit of Boden and Desigual.

Peacocks are better than primark or the supermarkets in my opinion and similar prices.

You're right mrsnec, peacocks IS way better than primark. I went into primark and couldn't find a single thing that I didn't find vulgar and garish. I went into peacocks and got some pretty decent t shirts

I'm 34 and have just started doing the same as you. To be honest I find fat face, white stuff, boden and phase 8 to be to old for me.

I've recently bought a lot in Gap, Banana Republic, Zara, All saints and Mango.

Zara and mango are great if you are on a budget.

I would recommend getting a really nice Handbag and summer coat / jacket.

I'm early thirties and probably shop in H&M most. Agree find it v difficult to find stuff in Topshop nowadays. I buy Ralph Lauren high street dresses in the sale and highly recommend them. I love whistles too if I've got a bit of cash. Hobbs is good for coats/basics. Don't like White Stuff/Boden/Fat face - find them unflattering and frumpy on my shape (short size 12/14 hourglass)

I also shop in charity/second hand shops and occasionally Primark although I bought a jacket from there recently and it ripped almost immediately Sad

I'm 35 and shop mostly in river island, h&m and zara. I always get vest tops from primark though as they're really long and wash well.

ImBrian · 18/05/2015 09:49

In topshop everything's always to short or cropped!

TarkaTheOtter · 18/05/2015 09:54

H&M
and other stories
All Saints
Banana Republic

TarkaTheOtter · 18/05/2015 09:55

Oh and Zara too

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 18/05/2015 10:10

I'm 37. For work I wear Hobbs, Mango (although selected with care, it can be hit and miss), Massimo Dutti, Warehouse (again can be hit and miss quality-wise), LK Bennett, White Company, &Other Stories... Agree with PPs about the Phase 8 dresses, from time to time they have useful flattering ones. H&M or Gap or Uniqlo for layering vests and other basics. I want to like Jaeger and Whistles but I'm far too short and not in any way slender and lithe.

For casual I like Comptoir des Cottonniers, Monki (if you fish through and avoid the teen stuff), Wrap, Vila (ASOS stock them, boozt is also good for Scandi brands), Zara...

I buy everything on sale with the exception of some of the basics. House of Fraser sales online are amazing for a lot of brands. Why pay full price in a struggling retail market?

Naicecuppatea · 18/05/2015 10:53

39 and shop in Gap, Top Shop, Uniqlo, Oasis, H&M, Urban Outfitters and occasionally Boden for basics.

LucilleBluth · 18/05/2015 12:38

I'm 34 and I know people on here hate it but I love White Stuff, their stuff is cut to flatter a size 12 with a three pregnancy knackered tummy ie me. Not keen on Boden but have some bits. Like ASOS, Dorothy Ps for cheap and cheerful. Office for footwear.....and a shit load of Retinol products for the rapidly ageing face Wink
