Shoulder length to crop, do you think it'll look good?

Sorry for the essay!

I'm going to wait until after DS3 has arrived (due end of June) and hopefully the hair shedding will have calmed down before the end of Summer so I can get on with it.

The first pic is of my hair blow dried with fresh perm colour on it, the one of my fringe is where it got a tiny bit wet and immediately curled and the 3rd is what I'm thinking of having done.

I've seen a few stylists over the years who have been wary of cutting my hair any shorter than chin length and I think it's because although my hair is naturally curly I always go to the salon's with my hair straight from previous blow drying and I haven't had the guts to really push it because I don't know what the curls would be like that short.

To save money, for the last 18 months I've had DH literally do a blunt cut every couple of months using proper scissors to take 1/2" off the ends for me and I do my fringe myself. I also do my own colour, usually some form of light brown.

So I'm going to spend the next few months saving up to go somewhere professional, but would like to know if you lovely lot think I'm wasting my time!

Doesn't Audrey Tatou have short curly hair? Have a Google! I vote do it Grin, but I'm biased.

averythinline · 15/05/2015 09:26

like it and think it would suit you...only when I had shorter hair it took more work and definitely needed cutting more often as lost its shape quicker....I grew mine as a way of saving money! I also found I needed to be able to put it up when had little time.... eventually cut it again when heading back to work as had extra cash....

I would go for a jaw length bob with blonde highlights to lift you a bit. We have similar shape faces, same brown hair( mine not curly) and pale skin . I think long to jaw and layered at back will look amazing on you.

Especially with blonde highlights.

If you don't go too short on first cut you can be a bit daring next time.

You and I have same strong jawline that suits a layered bob.

Dowser · 15/05/2015 09:44

Here...number 1 in first row or number 1 in third row

I think you'd look amazing with that.

At the moment I feel your over all colour and length drag you down a bit

( hope I haven't been too honest ;-))

You have the right hair for the Audrey Tautou cut and it is beautiful, go for it. I think it will look lovely on you!

Thick curly bob hard to carry off - can easily look old-fashioned/frumpy - and to maintain, ime.

DahliaBloom · 15/05/2015 10:20

And if your hair is naturally wavy, trying to force it into a sleek bob is so much work and if it's drizz or raining it'll just turn into a big frizz ball anyway.

BattlestarSpectacular · 15/05/2015 10:22

According to daily fail (I know! I followed a link then got sucked into sidebar of shame Blush) if the space between bottom of ear and chin is less than 2.5 inches, a crop will look good.

So now you know!

doctorboo · 15/05/2015 10:31

Dowser I love honesty Smile and funnily enough I've had very similar cuts and colours (I've been everything from blonde to black). It was last cut like that autumn 2013 and did look very nice.

Usually I work some highlights through the top to break it up, but am doing the basic grey coverage at the mo and existing on chocolate, weak coffee and any time I can get to sit by myself... The realisation that this isn't going to change anytime soon is a bit scary Wink

I think it would look well but there would be a lot of work in keeping it looking well. You'd have to style it every day and have regular cuts.

MyFirstName · 15/05/2015 10:59

I think it would look good. Would really make your beautiful eyes stand out.

And - the worst thing that could happen? You are not keen. You grow it again. And you know not to crop again.

Find yourself a really good hairdresser. Get a pinterest board of various crops you like (plus another of ones you don't/really hate) and book for a re-style/consultation and have a really good chat with the stylist. Ask them if it would work. Ask for recommendations.

And follow up pic please Grin

Olinguito · 15/05/2015 11:12

I think the curl in your hair looks really nice, so I would go for a style that doesn't require straightening.

KissyBoo · 15/05/2015 11:18

I think you could pull off a crop but would need make-up. Nothing major- a bit of eyeliner in a flick and mascara and then it would work with your features.

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 15/05/2015 11:30

A crop would work on you. Helps that you've a good bone structure. May I venture to suggest a heavy dark fringe and some eyeliner would look absolutely killer on you in the meantime?

Dowser · 15/05/2015 15:02

Ah thanks dr boo, was a bit worried for a minute. My greys are just starting to come through and I find the blonde highLights really do lift me. I have the Celtic brown tinged with auburn hair and the pale skin.

About 40 years ago I decided my hair was too dark for my skin tone so I began with highlights which I love. Now at 63 there's still plent brown in there and what grey is well covered by blonde.

I'm fortunate to have my hairdresser come to me. £20 for highlights and 1/2 inch trim . It's just below my shoulders so u can pin it up but I rocked the highlighted bob for years.

You don't have to straighten every day you can crimp and curl for a messy look.

Lunastarfish · 15/05/2015 15:07

I love having a crop but with naturally wavy hair it was a bit more work than my current shoulder length hair (same style as you OP). I had it very short at the nape but longer at the front (similar how Sarah Harding from girls aloud use to have her crop)- the front sections needed to be straightened most mornings otherwise it looked a little messy. I also dyed it blonde from my mousy colour so would have to have it dyed every 6-8 weeks as it was harder to pull off routes with a crop. A crop is more expensive to mainatin but that said, I really miss having one.

Go for it - It's only hair & will grow back.

doctorboo · 15/05/2015 15:38

I think it will definitely be a post-baby gift to myself. What better way to get some time out of the house, kid free, to get something which is purely for me.

This is how I look this afternoon on the school run with my hair in a pony tail. Once I start shedding I won't be able to do it because I get noticeable patches (maybe I'll be lucky though with #3?)
My two oldest are now able to entertain each other for small blocks of time so I'm able to love my hair in the mornings, if I'm not being lazy.
