Hi,

Got a new P/T job starting next week in a small b soc branch. Is shoes off behind the counter ok?

Id say no. Seems unprofessional to me. Is there a reason that you need to?

busymom123 · 13/05/2015 16:03

Just that I do it in my current job and it will be a 10 hour day including travelling.

Plus I hate flats!!

There was a long thread on this recently - the concencus was a big fat NO to being shoeless at work.

RightSideOfWrong · 13/05/2015 16:21

No. Especially not in finance.

cricketqueen · 13/05/2015 16:23

Haha I guess I'm very unprofessional then cause I take my shoes off all the time behind the counter in the building society I work at. I just slip them back on if I need to stand up/ walk anywhere. Your not my maternity cover are you haha.

avocadotoast · 13/05/2015 16:24

Erm, I'd imagine not. Won't you be sitting down anyway? Just wear comfortable shoes Confused

(As an aside - I'm sure a lot of companies require you to keep shoes on for health and safety reasons. Fire alarm goes off or something you need to get out quick, you can't be faffing about putting shoes on.)

busymom123 · 13/05/2015 16:28

Cricketqueen - thanks that's what I planned to do. Has it ever been a problem?

OP posts:
cricketqueen · 13/05/2015 16:30

No not for me anyway. I don't think my manager ever even noticed. But we are a small branch with only 5 staff so i guess it depends on your colleagues etc.

TheRealMaryMillington · 13/05/2015 16:33

No yuck, gross and unprofessional

QueenBean · 13/05/2015 16:34

It's fine if literally no one notices, you don't have stinky feet and you can slip them back on again pronto if you need to get up

Fingers crossed the crazy barefoot teacher lady from the other post doesn't stumble across this one...

polyhymnia · 13/05/2015 17:43

No way. Very unprofessional.

Snowberry86 · 13/05/2015 17:54

There was a very long thread on this recently because I said I was a teacher and teach my lessons barefoot!

I was slated for it and told it was unprofessional.

I still do it anyway!

Snowberry86 · 13/05/2015 17:55

Queenbean... Too late I'm afraid!

I am still shoeless in my classroom... But I think crazy is a little harsh!

MadisonMontgomery · 13/05/2015 18:08

Umm maybe wear flats then see what your new colleagues do? Where I work it would prob be fine at my desk but not appropriate when walking around the office.

QueenBean · 13/05/2015 18:09

Snowberry!

I mean crazy in a good way - we all had an accentric teacher; I think that would be you!

Lovemylittlebear · 13/05/2015 18:10

Fuck it and take your shoes off if you want- life's to short and worse things happen...even in finance :)

expatinscotland · 13/05/2015 18:13

I'd look at what everyone else is doing.

I worked a lot in law and shoes off would definitely be noticed and you'd be pulled up on it.

Finance, too.

Bunbaker · 13/05/2015 18:14

What is your problem with flat shoes? They aren't all frumpy you know.

Personally, if you didn't have smelly feet and were sat behind a counter I wouldn't care if you wore shoes or not.

burnishedsilver · 13/05/2015 18:20

Is it ok to go skirtless at work? Its just that I'm so much more comfortable with bare legs and the office is quite warm. Its just behind a desk. I'll slip my skirt back on if I need to walk around.

burnishedsilver · 13/05/2015 18:24

I should add, I don't really like trousers. They look less professional.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 13/05/2015 19:57

It depends will your clients be able to see if yes then it's not a good idea as it will look unprofessional.
I mean with this the greatest respect but are your feet smelly if not and you're sitting behind a desk then fine. You can easily skip them back on.
However if you're constant contact with your clients and if they see your feet then keep your shoes on.

expatinscotland · 13/05/2015 20:01

When did all these people going half-dressed happen?

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 13/05/2015 20:04

Just wear comfy shoes?! I regularly used to work 12 hour days (in finance Wink) plus commute and never felt the need to take my shoes off.

Everythingsgonegreen · 13/05/2015 20:05

Shoeless at work??

When did the world of employment go so mad and ....er casual?
