I want a perm

I think I've done this before but I can't find the thread.
So at the risk of repeating myself (and why shouldn't I bore you lot as well as people in RL?)...
...your tips please.
I want it sort of spirally.
I pincurl my hair almost all the time - twice a week at least - but it takes so much product to make it hold that it feels horrible.
I've got v fine almost shoulder length hair.
I know there was some expensive perm that someone mentioned - about £200 - I might save up for it.

Digital perm? I think they look very nice! If worry about a very tight perm looking a bit 80's though, have you had one before?

Hello CuttedUp

A few years ago I had a perm on shoulder length hair. It looked brilliant, and I think I suited curly hair much more than I do straight. However, in my quest to get the perm, I was told all sorts of horror stories and put off by several hairdressers that I requested the perm from. I felt very intimidated by them, after all, they know about hair/ hairstyles/ fashion, and I don't...

But it turns out they were all wrong. Perming has a terrible rep, and all the friends I discussed it with thought I was mad. But when it was done, it looked really, really good. I'm not deluded here, it just really was good.

I asked (a willing) hairdresser to perm it in the best way she knew how, and so she did. It cost about £50 in all. I can't advise on types of perm, though I gather digital perms are excellent. But the normal one I had worked beautifully.

Really, I just wanted to say, try not to be put off by people telling you perms are automatically awful (sadly, this will almost certainly happen- one hairdresser told me in horror that my hair would end up looking like pubes... she had a crap hairstyle btw!). That's what everyone told me, and my hair never looked better.

After a while I tired of the length and cut it all off. I'm now growing it back and will be perming again soon.

Ah that's really interesting Margaret. Where was this miraculous hairdresser? It might be worth the travel!

Grin She is in Derby! And very lovely.

But I know for a fact (I sound obsessed with perms!) that the local college hairdressing courses are NO LONGER TEACHING PERMING... as it's so uncommonly requested in salons now, it's a dying art. (Though maybe digital perms are the future!)

Very good luck to you and your hair! And if you're in the area I can PM you the hairdresser details!
