Can I wear this dress to a wedding?

here

... Or is it a bit drab? Wedding is in 2 weeks time; an evening do in a fancy hotel in Florida. I bought this a few weeks ago but haven't worn it yet, and I don't really have the money or inclination to get anything new.

I won't flatter myself by saying my figure looks just like that of the model, but I'm the same height and similarly proportioned.

looks a bit too casual for a wedding in my opinion

2LittleFishes · 12/05/2015 22:12

I like it, some heels and a big statement necklace an I think it's perfect!!

SunnyL · 12/05/2015 22:13

I've seen others at weddings wearing something similar and looked fab

Mrsfrumble · 12/05/2015 22:20

Well big heels are out of the question as I've never worn heels before! I was thinking of getting a pair of the sandals that the model is wearing as they are on sale at the moment, and painting my toenails nicely.

Staying cool and comfortable is as much of a concern as style, as Florida in late May is likely to be sticky and I'll be wrangling 2 toddlers for most of the evening.

What sort of statement necklace do you think? I'm crap at accessorizing and need all the help I can get!

I think it looks way too casual.

2LittleFishes · 12/05/2015 22:31

Id be concerned that with flats you might be drifting into drab- I think it's possible to dress it up, but don't think sandals will so the job unfortunately.

Mrsfrumble · 12/05/2015 22:42

Arghh! I've just looked in my closet, and or my dresses are a similar level of casual, or above the knee. I have visible thread veins on my thighs that I usually cover with tights or leggings, neither of which I want to wear on this occasion.

I'm going to look at the Gap website and see if they have anything smarter and knee length on sale. I'm not a "dressy" sort of person (hence no heels!) and my usual style is gamine / tomboyish, so I don't like the idea of spending lots of money on something I may never wear again!

Gap really wouldn't be the easiest place to find something to wear to a wedding.

Mrsfrumble · 12/05/2015 22:51

No, I know Sad

But I'm in the US and I don't know where to look for smarter and more affordable stuff! I'm a hopeless case.

Any chance you could borrow something?

SunnyL · 13/05/2015 06:54

Add a pair of gladiator style sandals and i think that dress would rock.

Anyway its the bride everyone remembers - not the guests.

Whatamayday · 13/05/2015 06:59

It's very casual for an evening do in a fancy hotel. You might just get away with it with heels but with flat sandals, you will look like you are on the beach.

Amaxapax · 13/05/2015 07:01

I think you'll be fine. Everything is so much more casual in the U.S. I'd get a big coral-coloured statement necklace and maybe some beaded sandals.

Alternatively, do you have Filene's Basement, Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx or similar near you? They would almost certainly have something a bit dressier at a decent price.

Oly4 · 13/05/2015 20:10

I think it's too casual for a fancy hotel reception. It just looks like a Gap dress. Can you get to an outlet mall? Even a cheap banana republic dress would prob look smarter.
I think heels or wedges are a must for a wedding.... Sorry!

Twinklestein · 13/05/2015 21:20

Try Ted Baker or Banana Republic or J Crew

There's ASOS in the US no?

Mrsfrumble · 13/05/2015 21:25

Okay, what do think of this?

My dear mum back in Blighty has offered to get it for me and post it so it arrives in time. Is it smart enough? I like it enough that I would wear it day-to-day as well.

I've got away with flats at plenty of weddings, including my own! I never wanted to wear heels when I was younger because I was self-conscious about being tall. These days I'll see the odd pair I like and wonder of I should give them a try, but I'd need to practice walking in private A LOT! I can always tell when I see an occasional heel-wearer because their gait is really odd.

I've just looked at the JCrew website. Their dresses are gorgeous but about 5 times more than I can afford.

I think the white stuff dress is lovely :) Will look beautiful. There is 20% off whitestuff for today and tomorrow so you will need to decide quickly.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 13/05/2015 22:09

For an evening do at a smart hotel, wouldn't you be better off in a long dress? Even a lovely maxi, with sandals underneath?

If you're tall and slim, a maxi would look amazing. I'm sorry but both those dresses look too casual to me.

Try Asos. I LOVE Asos, massive selection, not expensive, delivery is great and you can return anything you don't like.

I love this type of thing

Mrsfrumble · 13/05/2015 22:39

That dress is stunning whatsgoingon, but on a level of glamour I'm not sure is compatible with wrangling two lively toddlers. I can imagine the 2 year old trying to use the skirt as a tent, or yanking the top open and exposing my boob.

Do I need to think cocktail dress then? I've never been to an evening wedding before, only traditional English church / country hotel affairs.
