Posh day at Wimbledon: outfit help please!

I love all the gorgeous dresses out there for summer events but what do you wear if you have Celtic milk-bottle, veiny calves? I'm very self-conscious about them and don't feel good in knee length dresses without tights.
I also get sweaty backs of thighs so it's all particularly horrendous on a hot day sitting on a plastic seat watching tennis balls flying by. Unless bottom half items are lined, of course.
But it's a lovely corporate do with champers. Any ideas? Was thinking culouttes with Swedish Hasbeens but not sure if they'd work and if I'd get blisters. I don't own any yet.
I'm 5'4'', sort of neat pear/hourglass, small boobs.
I'm feeling at a low ebb so would love some lively inspiration, please!

How smart do you need to be?

Could you wear wide leg trousers, a silk top and some flat shoes?

Oly4 · 13/05/2015 08:43

Hello! I've been to loads of the corporate dos at Wimbledon And most of the women wear dresses, though quite a few wear lovely trousers.
What about an amazing maxi dress in a lovely flowing fabric. You can then just throw a shawl or cashmere cardigan round your shoulders if it gets chilly.
A smart pair of wife leg trousers with a lovely silk top or shirt would also work.
As for shoes, I've always worn heels to these events, though with a Ma I dress i would hunt out some flat leather sandals with pretty embellishment, as expensive as I could afford.
Do your nails and you're all set to go!
With a maxi dress you could wear an knee length underskirt and nobody would know.

Oly4 · 13/05/2015 08:43

Sorry for the typos!!!

BumbleNova · 13/05/2015 10:00

I second the idea of a maxi dress, something simple yet elegant. Asos always have a great selection.

I personally think hasbeens are too casual.I would wear some wedges with it, mostly because I am short-arse and it makes me feel more elegant but some metallic or embellished sandals would also be lovely.

have you got a jacket or a blazer you can stick over the top? that can smarten something up. I think a pashmina can just be a bit of a faff and I'm constantly battling to keep it in place.

Brookville · 13/05/2015 21:34

Just back to check in.... Thanks for your replies, ladies. Do you think maxi dresses work on short people? I have a friend who is 5'9'' with big boobs and she looks great but moi? Not sure. I like the silk top idea, Oly and Pantsalive. But Pantsalive do you not think the Warehouse one would look a bit baggy and make me look fat with the wide leg troosers?
Bumble interesting you think hasbeens look casual. They are outrageously expensive anyway so I'll just throw that idea out the window. Yes have a silk top I got made in Vietnam a few years back and a lovely jacket. Good idea. I'm also rubbish with scarves. They get in the way.

Would a touch of fake tan sort out your veiny legs? I use johnsons holiday skin in the light colour on my milk bottle legs. It covers a multitude.

GenericDietCola · 13/05/2015 22:18

If it's a corporate event, then I wouldn't wear a maxi dress. I do like the idea of wide leg trousers and silk top, but if you're shortish, I'd make sure you get one that fits nicely and doesn't drown you.

Pantsalive · 13/05/2015 22:41

I agree, that top wasn't quite the right one. I wanted to find a more fitted one, possibly a wrap but still a bit floaty. If you already have one that you think would be good, I'd definitely go for trousers.

Brookville · 13/05/2015 22:43

burnished I have got holiday skin or the Garnier one on the cupboard. The colour is nice but it takes FOREVER to dry when I apply after my shower I feel like I need to walk about on the nip for the next hour so as not stain my clothes. Not being a natural nudist I prefer to make breakfast for the family fully clothed so tend to get lazy about using fake tan. Any tips? Using a mitt? Does that help?

I was lucky enough to go to the Men's finals last year and just to give you an idea wore almost the exact Masai outfit on the right. My trousers were a darker khaki though.
I felt comfortable and fab all the , long , day.

Maxi dresses might be a pain on the steep stairs in centre court .

Bugger ! Wrong thread. As you were !

Trumpton · 14/05/2015 04:43

Jet lag catching up with me . Grin right thread , I was confused by the fake tan post above mine. I don't get my legs out ever. By the 5 ft 4 ins and size 14 .

Twinklestein · 14/05/2015 13:14

I'm 5'5" OP so almost the same height. I steer clear of voluminous maxi dresses, but slim-fitting ones are fine.

CurlsLDN · 14/05/2015 13:15

I really recommend the sally Hanson leg spray. It's like an airbrush foundation, rather than a sticky tan, so dries v quickly and provides actual coverage.

This stuff m.boots.com/h5/cat_hub?unCountry=uk&path=/en/Sally-Hansen-Airbrush-Legs-Tan-Glow-75ml_1154646/

It comes in about four shades, so you could get the lightest one. Just thought it might be worth you trying out, if it would open your options for shorter dresses. I think a midi length dress with smart wedges would look lovely, and not show too much leg

CurlsLDN · 14/05/2015 13:20

Just found this hilarious review of it

Curls this looks great. I'll definitely give it a go. Thank you!

The corporate dos are more dressy than trumpton's pics. Sorry trumpton.
There's nothing wrong with a maxi dress if it's beautiful, such as silk or with a gorgeous print and nice jewellery. But if you're worried OP, I'd go for lovely trousers and a silk top. You can't go wrong with that.
In my experience (about 10 Wimbledon corporate dos), most women dress up. Just think elegant and you can't go wrong

Brookville · 14/05/2015 19:26

Thank you Oly, I might not actually have to buy anything now! Will definitely try out that airbrush leg tan though. Looks great.
