Dressing a fat person on low budget for summer?

What would you recommend this year? I'm never in style and would rather stay in and not be seen tbh but that's not fair on my DS who would like mummy to do beach/park etc a bit more

Are there any cheap light cover ups you can recommend that don't look like tents?

Please can you give us some details - size/hair colour/current clothing likes & dislikes e.g. which bits are you happier showing vs which bits would you rather were totally covered (without needing to rely on wraps, scarves etc) whether you prefer skirts or trousers.

I'd start with making sure you have a decent bra and good sandals so you are starting with a good frame. My sister just bought these in tan and they give a good base for anything in khaki, denim, or navy.

ShootPeppaPig · 11/05/2015 15:26

I'm a 16-18, and 5ft6

I don't mind showing arms/calves but that's about as far as I can cope with.

I'm probably fairly conservative - not keen to draw attention to myself but would like to be slightly more in style than leggings and a hoodie with uggs which is about as trendy as I get Wink

16-18? Thought you were going to say size 32, when you said you would rather stay in and not be seen!
Asda is cheap, and goes up to size 22 so you will get what you want in there, look on the website.

Fairylea · 11/05/2015 16:03

You're the same size and height as me... you need to work on your confidence. There is no way you (or anyone) should be hiding away. I don't consider myself huge by any means.

I currently wear skinny jeans with t shirts that end just below my bum, lots of tunics and leggings (tu at sainsburys great for these) and I love summery dresses from new look and seasalt.

A size 16 to 18 is pretty average. You can shop mostly anywhere and wear mostly anything!

Oly4 · 11/05/2015 16:03

I've just bought this and plan to wear with linen vests and flip flops. Very flattering on and you'll prob only need a 16 medium length.
Ignore the fact it says asymmetrical - and the weird bad review. It is a great Jersey comfy skirt at a bargain price.

I'm a size 16 and this year I'm going for lose fitting cotton trousers with lose fitting t shirts and shirts. Peacocks have loads in at the moment, most of them are pattened so need plainish tops. Three quarter length trousers can be good too, and can be worn with more fitted tops, the trousers also solve the problem of the dreaded chub rub if like me you've been, ahem, blessed with big thighs. Otherwise I wear maxi dresses or skirts (again with t shirts and shirts with the skirts) and Evans comfort shorts to deal with the chub rub.

Oly4 · 11/05/2015 16:05

These £20 chinos are also super flattering, I've got them in navy

UnspecialSnowflake · 11/05/2015 16:07

Loose, I meant loose!

Oly4 · 11/05/2015 16:08

Another absolute winner in M&S. I'm a size 12/14 but got a 14 so it wasn't too clingy. Looks fab with a slim leather tan belt

Oly4 · 11/05/2015 16:09

Ps in 5ft6 and got a medium length in that dress so it was a bit below knee

Oly4 · 11/05/2015 16:11

Ps it comes in green stripe too

Oly4 · 11/05/2015 16:13

These Biden linen vests look good with the maxi skirt and chinos. I've got the stripes and they are fab, they wash well. They are pricey but there's always a 20% off code about (I have one if you need one). Worth ordering a couple of sizes

I do understand those saying it's my confidence not my size and you're right - it somewhat is. I became this size recently as a result of medication side effects and comfort eating and not at all used to it. I ballooned a 12 to a 22 till recently and have slimmed a few stone so far...

Even at size 12 I was always an odd shape with a giant bum so needed 14 to get over that but then rest would be baggy until my ankles which are cankles - they actually get wider at the ankle... Shock

So a few body issues, yup lol

I would never have considered the chinos or the maxi skirt but I'm going to check them out Grin

I Envy the dress! Does it hide the love handles or would it need a waistcoat/cardi type thingy over?

OP posts:
Oly4 · 11/05/2015 22:38

It is lovely
And thick stretchy Jersey and I find it skims the boys I don't like. But I did size up and I wear a belt to give it a more flattering shape. You don't need cardis!! You're a 16, not a 32. Just try and think of shapes and clothes that flatter your figure. Hiding under cardis and coats isn't the answer.

Oly4 · 11/05/2015 22:38

Bits not boys! ??

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 12/05/2015 08:22

Firstly you're not fat!. No where near it! Yes sightly over weight but size 16-18 is hardly fat, small wonder youngsters have such negative connotations about their bodies when adults with womanly curves are referring to themselves as far.
I'm what you call fat but I'd rather my daughter see me embracing and celebrating my curves than be ashamed of them.
Sorry for the lecture. I just hate people undermining themselves.
Anyone on to the question.
New look does the inspire range size 14-32. Very reasonable
Asda go up to a size 24
They've got a sale on in Evans at the moment.
primark go up to size 20.

SunnyL · 12/05/2015 08:31

Avoid all polyester crap and go for classic styles in natural fabrics.

Asda is horrible for polyester (and the conditions their garments are made in are horrible).

Sainsburys often has fair trade cotton and is surprisingly good value.

Next is using a lot of rayon which is better than polyester but not as good as cotton.

H&M has some organic cotton but you have to search through a lot of shite first.

I'd suggest Gap in the sales is the best place for classic tailoring in natural fabrics. When i was size 16/18 I got some crackig things in the sale that I'm still wearing now inc a trench coat from 90 reduced to 20.

Lj8893 · 12/05/2015 08:49

I'm the same size as you, but I need to cover my arms and boobs. I live in maxi dresses and t shirt dresses in the summer, and am loving all the kimonos in the shops this year. I bought a lovely one in adds yesterday to wear on top of sleeveless dresses.
