Looking for a hat or "substantial fascinator"

Anyone fancy showing me some pictures before I start traipsing round actual real life shops?

I have a large head so will have to buy in RL rather than online (which I prefer for buying most things).

Oh - and that's a picture of the dress.

this? John Lewis has lots. If you have time do a trawl of charity shops/vintage shops/TK Maxx for a bargain. Charity shops always seen to have hats in and most are a wear-once thing so are in vgc.

Trills · 10/05/2015 15:57

TK Maxx is a good idea - I hadn't thought of that.

Charity shops would be a separate trip to going to the place with department stores.

That John Lewis one is the kind of thing that I want, yeah. Or maybe the "pillbox" type.

Any more thoughts, or suggestions?

Or tips on potential fascinator pitfalls that I have not anticipated?

Are you going to a Royal Garden Party, by any chance OP? I recognise that phrasing!

I wore a 'hatinator' Hmm I got from John Lewis that i liked and didn't make me feel frumpy or like a mother of the bride - it's always a good bet to look for rental agencies too if you can't be bothered to own one (mine is just sitting in the bottom of my wardrobe Blush )

Epsom derby in the Queen's stand - probably the same rules!

I'm aiming for cream so I will be able to wear it again if the occasion arises - I figure I can wear any colour dress with cream accessories.

OP - not sure where you live but I discovered there are lots of independent milliners who will rent hats out. I've done it a few times now and it often means you can get something really lovely/unusual/striking for the same as an off the shelf fascinator. I've never worn a hat twice anyway!

Maybe have a look on google for somewhere like that nearer you?

Trills · 11/05/2015 09:21

I like the pillbox but I think I will have to try it on to see if that style suits me.

One of my friends is "renting a hat from a hat lady", but it all sounds like a bit of a faff. I don't want to go and make an appointment to have a conversation with someone for whom hats are very important, I want to look around some shops and pick something that I think is nice.

Hiring a hat seems to start from £35+, and it's unlikely that I'll find something I like right at the bottom of the range, so if I can get something from a department store and wear it twice, it'll be worth it. I do wear "going to wedding" type outfits multiple times, if I have events with different groups of people.

Yikes, our place (SE England on the Thames) starts from £10 for basic styles and then anywhere up to £50 for a week's hire!

Hope you find something Smile

Is the background of the dress pale pink? I can't seem to enlarge it.

How about this www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_087010432909_-1

or www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_087010422905_-1

The ones on a hairband stay put well though some people don't like having the band visible.
If you're getting your hair done for the occasion bring the hat or fascinator to the salon so they can see it and if it's a fascinator tehy will fix it in place for you.

SunnyL · 12/05/2015 08:36

I go to charity shops in nice towns. The one where my mum lives is stuffed full of really expensive hats and fascinators for under 15 quid. Often they'll come with the matching handbag and shoes that have only been worn once.

Trills · 12/05/2015 21:44

I only had a brief look online but the first couple of places that appeared in my search started from £35 and I just don't want to have to think if I go to a BBQ after the event and tomato sauce goes everywhere will I have to spend £200?.

The dress background is a little iridescent in a no-particular-colour kind of way. I thougt it was blue for a while.

I could wear pink with it but I'd going to get cream so that I can wear my cream shoes/bag/fascinator with a different dress again.

The shape of that saucer one is nice.

I'm not getting my hair done because hairdressers are rubbish at doing my (curly) hair and again faff. You have to talk to them about what you want.

But THANK YOU for taking an interest in my very mundane request.
