Trying to find an outfit for 12yr DSD for a party - can anyone link to examples of what is acceptable to a nearly teen

Help please, unfortunately there won't be any time to take her shopping with me, so I need to find a few things for her to try on and choose from (on a budget).

I have been trawling the net and shops and can't figure out what is suitable for a 12 year old, it seems such an in between age. Everything is either too grown up or too young and I don't really know what is considered 'fashionable' to that age group for occasion wear.

She is tall and very slim, hormones are kicking in so going through a very self-conscious stage. Currently lives in jeans and hoodies.

If anyone could shed some light on it and let me know what their DD's of this age would wear, I'd really appreciate the insight.

Thanks

It is an inbetween age.

My DD hated johnnie b, but spent a lot of time in Primark, New Look, etc.
I think it was mainly skinny jeans and a teeny top at that age. Or leggings and crop-top. Or teeny shorts and top...

Patatas · 06/05/2015 14:00

Thank you, unfortunately my local New Look doesn't have the teen range, will have to go further a field.

She doesn't seem interested in the shorts/crop tops look yet.

Is this outfit suitable or totally wrong? It's a day time party www.hm.com/gb/product/73332?article=73332-P&cm_vc=PRA1#article=73332-Q hopefully the link will work, but its the turquoise one.

I like the last one, the light green trousers and the cream top. Is that the one you mean? Yes that would be fine. My DD would wear that and if yours is tall and slim it would really suit her.

Bramshott · 06/05/2015 16:16

DD1 (also 12, also lives in jeans & hoodies) is a fan of those dresses that fall straight from the neckline, worn over leggings.

She has one along these lines:

Could you not sit down with her tonight at the PC, set a budget and let her choose her own thing? Most places do next day delivery if you order before 8pm- I know New Look do for example which has already been suggested.

IKnowRight · 06/05/2015 16:25

Have a look at New Look online, they will deliver to store for free if you spend above a certain amount - I always make sure that I spend enough, ordering additional sizes etc, then return what doesn't fit. My tween is a new look addict. Hang on will have a look for the sort of thing she would wear

Patatas · 06/05/2015 16:25

Yes it was the green trousers outfit.

That dress is really pretty bram, I didn't think of Debenhams.

sherbet it's my step daughter, so won't be seeing her until the day of the event unfortunately. I will buy a selection so she has a choice and hope for the best that one is right.

This jacket from H&M in various incarnations has always been a part of my DD's wardrobe.

It will 'tough up' any dress if she's a reluctant dress wearer.

Patatas · 06/05/2015 19:45

Thanks for the links, they're lovely. Love the idea of the jacket too. Thank you.

DD has that jacket! She has worn it so much that I fear it has actually permanently attatched itself to her. Total bargain price too.
