I think Next are the worst.
I'm usually a 12, but lately their 12's drown me they are so big.
Yet their arms are usually too tight- on everything.

NEXT clothes were fitted on real people in the past, I don't know about now. The DDS used to be fitting models and when they were under 3 months old, they were used for fitting clothes sized up to 6 months and neither of them were big babies. However , I think it was more to do with seeing how the clothes looked, whether fastenings would catch ect, than sizing. They did used to advertise for people who were a standard size 10 ect,for adult clothes fitting.

I'm a 6 now, after losing 5 1/2 stone a few years ago. I mostly wear children's clothes or charity shop clothes as it's hard to find clothes small enough these days.
Primark 6 is huge, Boden age 11 fits, as does M&S age 10 and H&M 12-14 (if I turn the legs up a bitBlush).
I'm 5'0", 34-23-36, those used to be normal proportions for women, except the height obvs I'd love to have the budget for vintage clothes though...

likalixer · 30/04/2015 08:40

And I notice next is doing a 6 now. I can wear the size 6 tops as they are all baggy atm. By sizing up they introduce smaller sizes. Soon they will have to do size 4!

If they keep on the way they're going, it won't be long before most of us are Size Zero Grin

All of them, I was a 14 in 1982, now I'm an 8-10. I still have some of the 1982 ones and they still fit.

likalixer · 30/04/2015 10:07

wide leg trousers are in, but the pairs I've tried on, you could fit 10 people in one leg.
There's wide and there's WIDE! Shock

It's not just clothes btw. Our feet are getting bigger as we get heavier. Some brands are doing wide fit (like new look). Others are probably just widening their normal shoe offerings.

I am one of those small people with measurements around 32 24 33. Jeans I have on at the moment are TopShop from about 5 years ago. The top is new and from some random brand via ASOS but it is a good fit, label is XS (arms possibly a bit long but I am happy with it). Most coats are too big for me but I have a couple of neat fitting jackets from Toast in a 6. The Boden 6 can be ok but I also sometimes buy the Jonnie B plain tshirts/stripe tops.

PastPerfect · 30/04/2015 13:04

They all vanity size - although cheaper end high street are worst.

I wore a size 10 in Next 20 years ago and wear a size ten today despite being two stone heavier and having significantly more inches.

PastPerfect · 30/04/2015 13:06

Actually Zara are true to size

A University of Michigan study found that when a woman thinks she wears a smaller size, she buys more clothing. "What designers and manufacturers started doing was taking what was once their measurements for their size 8, for example, and putting a size 6 label on it instead, knowing that a woman would be more likely to make a purchase,"

"The problem with this method is that, while it can be psychologically encouraging for the shopper, stores have had to introduce smaller sizes to fit petite women. It's why we're now seeing size XXS."^

Plus a lot of jeans and trousers have Lycra in them now so you can make a pair of trousers for as they have 'give'. In the past once you grew to fat for your jeans it was either a diet or nothing.

sebsmummy1 · 30/04/2015 15:53

*fit

I like this advice:

Rather look at the actual size and shape of the garment, and cut out the size tag after purchasing the item,"

OP posts:
likalixer · 30/04/2015 15:57

I hate stretchy jeans. The ones without any give in them fitted far better.

Next, definitely. I've no idea what they base their sizes on.

I'd disagree with H&M though. I'm normally a 10/12 depending on the shop but in H&M I'd easily need a 12/14. But then the basics stuff they do fits me in size S. Weird.

On the flip side of this, I remember going to New Look a few years back and being adamant they must have amended their sizes because 12s were too big all of a sudden. Turned out I had lost weight. So sometimes it is us that have changed Wink

TwoLittleTerrors · 30/04/2015 17:05

avocado I think H&M S is 12/14 and XS is 8/10 maybe? I always needed a XS there and I wear 6/8 tops depending on brand.

avocadotoast · 30/04/2015 17:52

Yeah I know they re-jigged the sizing on the S/M/L stuff fairly recently. Which is annoying because I used to be a solid M there and now I dither between S/M!
