How to make my teeth whiter

Any ideas on how best to whiten teeth?

I suppose in the long run I might save up and get a proper whitening treatment at the dentist (anyone know how much this might cost?) but in the short term I'm wondering if anyone has tried anything that works...

I have some whitening gel stuff but no trays (I did have some but they were rubbish so I threw them away). I also heard baking powder is good...

Have you found any whitening toothpastes that work?

What foods/drinks should I be avoiding?

All advice appreciated!

I use Whitestrips but I think they're messing up my teeth, as I've had no end if dental problems since I started using them. They do work though, really well.

I can recommend this toothpaste! It's AMAZING for whitening your teeth.

I linked to the wrong Rapid White product in my earlier post. These are what you want - so pleased with the results: www.boots.com/en/Rapid-White-Express-Max-Effect-5-minute-dissolving-tooth-whitening-strips_1287182/

I'm sorry, but I'm placemarking!

Well I have just used my hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash before cleaning my teeth before bed and although there was a slight bleachers taste to it, it was ok! And my mouth feels super duper clean!

What Durham said!

Bakeoffcake - you're going to love the Crest strips!

I can't recommend them highly enough. Since I started using them three years ago people are always complimenting my white teeth and asking for 'the secret'. Can't believe that people pay hundreds of pounds when you can just spend 20 quid.

A tip - they're much more effective if you go to the hygienist first. Otherwise you're just bleaching the plaque rather than the teeth themselves.

Also seconding Beverley Hills as a brilliant every day toothpaste.

If no one has mentioned it (I've not read the whole thread), but Colgate have this new whitening toothpaste called optic. It looks grey with bits in on the brush but goes bright blue and foamy in the mouth. I think that my teeth look whiter some using it and I think it works in the principle of adding blue to washing powder.

I'm a dentist. Crest whitening strips are illegal in the uk although you can buy them. Whitening from a dentist is around £250.

Make sure whatever you do you see a hygienist first, it's amazing how many people come in requesting whitening and then change their mind one they've had their teeth cleaned.

KoalaDownUnder · 29/04/2015 07:52

You know, I'm getting the horrible feeling that they're illegal in Australia as well, and I'm going to have trouble getting them shipped here.

NoArmani, do you know why they are illegal when other whitening products are not?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 29/04/2015 08:05

Because the level of peroxide in them is banned by the EU over safety concerns. Ingesting bleach isn't a great idea and you should only really be whitening teeth with guidance from a dentist. Yes they are cheap but could cost you far more in fixing dental problems.

KoalaDownUnder · 29/04/2015 08:11

Hmm...food for thought.

I know you can't buy the highest-percentage carbamide peroxide gel refills from Australian dentists anymore. (You used to be able to when I first had my trays made, years ago.)

49again · 29/04/2015 08:27

I got the trays and whitening kit from the dentist for about £250 which is a lot of money but has made a massive difference to my teeth.

I have a friend who has never drunk tea, coffee or alcohol and she has the whitest teeth you have ever seen.

goodasitgets · 29/04/2015 08:50

Second the White glo smokers toothpaste above. My hygienist commented I had gone from a lot of staining to none

avagosling · 29/04/2015 10:59

Oil pulling with coconut oil, every morning for 5-10 min, you will see the results in a couple of weeks
