Is there a magic product out there that'll help the girls' hair hold the style dp's mam has chosen for them?

For her wedding day?

It's a half up bun, done with a donut then plaited down the length iyswim?

I've tried it on hair that hasn't been washed for a few days & it slides out & looks scraggy by the time we get to school Confused

Or any tips for making it stay put just long enough for the (church, so maybe longish) ceremony & a couple of snaps afterwards?

Dry shampoo might help.

Have you tried good old fashioned hairspray?

TheCraicDealer · 27/04/2015 10:14

The only thing I could think of would be setting lotion, but how you'd go about using that is beyond me! If it doesn't work with day(s) old hair and a bit of dry shampoo to add grip then I don't think it'll last the car journey and ceremony.

Maybe you could do their hair again, leave it an hour or so, take a picture, send it to your DP's Mum and say, "Did this an hour ago; you sure this is the style you want?". If it's going to look like poop I'd want to know.

I have some dry shampoo.

I'll leave their hair unwashed until mid-week, give it a blast with that, style it and then blast with hairspray.

If it's still slipping out after that then I'll email her a picture & see if she wants something else.

It's worse on dd2's. She's very curly & it just slips out into a mass of fuzz Grin

Thanks.

if it's an immoveable bun you need then go to poundland and get their version of this

you will need to practise a bit, but they are truly amazing at keeping a bun in fine silky hair.

I can't quite visualise the style you are discussing, but you can do buns around ponytails/plaits with these as well

ALSO if hair is very fine you can shorten the poundland bun things with some heavy scissors....just make sure to sew the ends of the fabric cover back up as the inside is sharp on the edges otherwise.

Also recommend their Spin Pins for up dos...totally brilliant for silky hair....keeps mine up all day.

I can't quite picture what you mean either.

My dd has very fine hair and was a bridesmaid recently. They wanted her to have a Dutch flower braid and I did it myself. I washed her hair and then towel dried it and put firm mousse through it. I then let it air dry a little, styled and pinned it and then used super duper hair spray. It held perfectly all day. Usually, I put nothing chemical in dd's hair at all and style it with grips but it was the only way I found of holding something so intricate for the duration of the wedding and photos.

burnishedsilver · 27/04/2015 10:52

Get a hairdresser to do it. I don't know what they do that's so different but it will hold for days.

lucysmam · 27/04/2015 10:56

It's a bun in the top half (like you'd do a ponytail but a bun instead). Then the remaining hair that isn't up in the bun, plaited.

I've tried both pinning the ends of the bun away and plaiting them with the rest but it didn't go well Hmm

I'll have a look at mousse as well. I have a good while to practise - just like to be organised with time to spare if you get me.

Hairdresser's not an option really, unless the one up the road from dp's mam is super cheap. I'll pop in and ask next time I walk down there.

Small local hairdressers aren't usually hugely expensive to put children's hair up, I've had DD's done for about a tenner before.

From watching them, I think what they do differently (other than skill, obviously, lol) is about three times as many Kirby grips as I'd think to use and twice as much hairspray.

GingerLDN · 27/04/2015 12:05

Can't imagine this hairstyle. Dry shampoo and firm hold hairspray

BallroomWithNoBalls · 27/04/2015 12:06

You could do it while their hair is wet, with mousse, then copious hairspray to fix.

lucysmam · 27/04/2015 13:49

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try again towards the end of the week & if still no joy we'll come up with something else Smile

Hair powder is also very good but its tricky to use.
