Shall I dye my highlighted hair dark with a shop bought semi-permanent colour?

I have been having my shoulder length hair highlighted for about a year (a vain attempt to hide my grey roots) but I HATE it.
The final straw today was my 7 year old Dd saying, 'your hair is so rough mummy' She is right though, it is.
I want to go to boots first thing and buy a home colourant but will that be a big mistake?
Any help gratefully received

I would try an intensive conditioner first, see if that helps. Your hairdresser should be using one after your colour of she's a decent hairdresser.

I have been using intensive conditioners, oils, balms - you name it I've used it but my hair is like candyfloss. Also I just don't suit being blonde, I want to be a brunette again!

You could try a light brown. It will need some red in it so your hair doesn't go green.

As the other post said you must have some thing with red/warm tones in .. Anything ashy will turn out greenish !! ( voice of experience ;) ) always choose a shade lighter than you need as the bleach will really make the colour grab !! Try recital dark blonde , that will go a light brown

My advice would be not to go too dark as this can just look harsh.

Secondly, potentially head to the salon for the first colour? I'm only saying this because my MIL dyes her own greying hair and at first it is shiny and smooth and then it foes rough and dull too. And her grey roots can be seen pretty much a week after dying, so there's that to think about too.

What about high lights and low lights, gradually bringing in more honey shades so only need a tint and not bleach?

There is also a very good conditioner by Sebastian. It's called Penetrait which is good. I used to have platinum blonde hair and these really did work well for making it slick and shiny.

Just to also add, that I tried going darker from blonde to make my hair look better and to cover the grey.
Grey roots can be very noticeable on dark hair!!
I've ended up with a full head blonde tint (no bleach) and my hair is in far better shape than with highlights, as only the roots are coloured, not bleach applied the full length of hair.
My roots do look dark, but not dreadfully so, I have it done every 6 weeks. But I'd rather dark roots than grey ones!!

Thanks all, I think I will have a chat with my hairdresser instead of attempting it myself. I needed talking down from making a potentially horrendous mistake. I think the lowlights idea might be the way forward rather than a whole head as it might tone it down a bit without obvious grey roots. I wish it was all grey and not salt and pepper as I would be tempted to let it grow out naturally. I don't think I would be blessed with beautiful silver locks unfortunately
