Wearing high heels-not used to it. Does it get easier?

I always wear flats these days and havent worn high heels for years. Ive just bought some for a special occasions and Im hobbling around on them at the moment. My ankles ache already.
Is it just a case of getting used to them or should I give up? They fit ok

How high are they? I'd go for a smaller heel (but not kitten heel) if you're not used to it, or a wedge if it'd suit your outfit.

niceandwarm · 24/04/2015 12:32

They aren't very high - 3 1/2 inches and also have a small platform. Ive tried wedges before and found them uncomfortable - but maybe Ill give them another try. Meanwhile I've already bought these shoes so Im going to have to persevere

There are a few videos on YouTube that teach you how to walk in heels.

niceandwarm · 24/04/2015 14:16

Thanks burnished I'll have a look.

I'm sure the Chinese ladies got used to footbinding eventually - after they had knackered up their hips, backs and feet.

you have a choice. Doesn't mean you need to go round in dead flat shoes (which you shouldn't anyway). But silly high heels look ridiculous and make you walk like a constipated duck.

3.5 inches is VERY high!! Ignore the dumb websites which tell you that is 'medium'. Is it hell.

niceandwarm · 24/04/2015 17:45

Specialsubject is it really?

I think 3.5 is high, it's a big change for your feet to get used to.

If you're determined though you'll just have to grit you're teeth and bear it.

specialsubject · 24/04/2015 18:31

the rules have changed - it is now very difficult to buy smart shoes with walkable heels. Some fashion type has indeed decided that your kind of heel isn't high - but of course it is. Compare with your feet.

as an example, this nightmare is listed on the 'New Look' site as 'flat heel'.

couple that with my size 42 feet and I can't buy shoes for 'office' wear. Just as well I don't need them because I think the two pairs I own will have to last for the rest of my life!

ChaiseLounger · 24/04/2015 19:03

What? 3.5 inches is huge!!

niceandwarm · 24/04/2015 19:14

Well no wonder I'm having trouble then! However I'll re-measure the heel as they don't look very high to me.

I think it all depends on the shoe. I tried on an M&S mule which had 8cm heel...so comfortable, then tried on many lower heeled sandals which were awful. The mule had a solid heel and soft leather front....and was £50. I think if you want high heels to be comfortable you have to pay.

I don't mind buying taxi shoes but appreciate that I will never walk far in them.

I'm currently looking for a pair of Riekers.

niceandwarm · 24/04/2015 22:57

/mine are Clarks and are very comfortable to walk in all day long, according to user comments.

I do 3.5 inch heels most days. It's a standard work heel for me. Maybe I'm looking at a different shoe but New Look heels were listed as 'block heels' when I looked at the link, not 'flat'. They're a lovely daytime heel.

I love heels - just try and relax your hips and you'll find them easier.

niceandwarm · 26/04/2015 12:56

Well I'm wearing the shoes for a short time each day and they are gradually getting easier to walk in. I'm no longer waddling like a duck and can go up and down stairs. My ankles don't hurt so much so maybe they'll do.

Well done! I can't go over 1 1/2 inches and don't even try anymore.
