Upper lip hair removal for a 13yo with sensitive skin

She's really self-conscious about it, and it does show now quite a lot.

I'm nervous about her using any creams. She gets a bit of a reaction to soaps and suncream, although might not be too bad for a couple of minutes and then washed off well.

She doesn't want to do anything that will hurt! (no waxing etc) and I'd rather avoid anything that could cause spots as that will be worse.

Any ideas?

I would get her a lady shave and avoid threading/waxing/creams/bleach with get sensitive skin.

It's fine, even Caroline Hirons does itWink

OK great. The clue was in my username all along!

When I was her age I used to sneak into my parents' room and use my dad's philips electric razor. Are they pretty similar?

Nair facial cream for sensitive skin. Do it in the evening and afterwards smear her upper lip with Sudacream and keep it on until the morning. It will take any redness away.

BumbleNova · 24/04/2015 09:26

have you tried bleaching it? I use the nair sensitive cream above and i have not had any adverse reaction. my skin is even allergic to shampoo. its the most painfree and non intrusive i can think of.

Only1scoop · 24/04/2015 09:27

Bleach with Jolen but hair will appear thicker I used that at dd age and then started waxing. It's non existent almost now.

glittertits · 24/04/2015 09:28

How fine is the hair? Only, if it is quite fine waxing wont hurt at all. Mine is dark black, but very fine and I wax it. Taking a plaster off of your arm hair hurts more than waxing my top lip.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/04/2015 09:32

I have a 13yo DD
When she wanted to do her legs, I bought her Boots own brand sensitive. Fine on legs but irritated her underarms.
So for the armpits, I got NADS underarm hair remover cream, worked well, no reaction.

She does have upper lip hair, but I wouldn't go down the shaving route (it will grow back blunt)

I bought Jolen cream bleach for DD (patch test first) and it had a really good result. (I use hot wax but it feels really weird to have a completely naked top lip and there are always a couple of tiny spots)

DD has her brows threaded. (The threaders can do top lip but I think she'd be to Blush and wimpy to sit there and have that done)

Oh the joys of teenage daughters Smile

I've always found Boots cream bleach / hair lightener much easier to use than Jolen, both in terms of mixing it, and it staying on the face as long as it's suppoed to. At that age I worried terribly about regrowth/stubble from any actual removal, so went for the bleach (though on someone darker skinned, the bleached hair might be more noticeable). Skin was always slightly red afterwards but that soon faded.

KatyS36 · 24/04/2015 11:04

I use a lady shave. Works perfectly if hairs are fine :)
5 seconds every few days and free after initial outlay :)

leedy · 24/04/2015 11:08

I'd be very wary of going down the shaving route, as PP have said the hair will grow back blunt and may look more visible between shaves.

I have very sensitive skin and threading actually works best for me, plus lasts ages and the regrowth isn't obvious at all. Though it's a bit ouchy.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/04/2015 11:14

The shaving is no different from when it grows back after plucking or waving or whatever. There's no way I'd put even cream for sensitive skin on delicate skin,I had a huge reaction to Nair sensitive. I'm the same with waxing, skin just goes into shock!

leedy · 24/04/2015 11:29

"The shaving is no different from when it grows back after plucking or waving or whatever."

Really? I definitely see the difference on legs - if you shave you basically cut the hair off flat so when it grows back you get quite clear "stubble". If you wax/pluck/thread/epilate you pull the entire hair out and it grows back with a narrower tip == less visible regrowth.

Think threading is good for sensitive skin because nothing actually goes on your skin, IYKWIM: the thread just grabs the hairs and yanks. You'll still get redness because, well, you've just pulled a hair out by the roots, but it's not skin irritation.

oigetoffmycheese · 24/04/2015 17:23

I am v sensitive skinned - had bad reactions to veet, Mair, immac, bleach etc. shaving does give the appearance of thick stubble. Wax gives me spots - threading is the only thing. No issues at all - and I am stupidly sensitive.

I get threaded every 4 weeks and it's perfect - I can even do my top lip myself - you tube it - but my eyebrows I leave to the professionals!

specialsubject · 24/04/2015 17:34

bleaching is the only one that means no stubble. But she needs to do a patch test elsewhere first.

oigetoffmycheese · 24/04/2015 17:45

Bleaching still leaves you with hair though - it's just a different colour which I think looks worse - like a ghostly halo effect Confused. Threading doesn't leave stubble the new hair grows back with a narrow tip as someone else pointed out.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/04/2015 19:23

You can still get irritation form threading not just red skin, proceed with caution!

Methe · 24/04/2015 19:28

I can spot someone who has bleached their lip hair from a mile away.

Would she try an epistick? It does hurt a bit but not that much and it it really easy to use and costs about a quid.

MsAspreyDiamonds · 24/04/2015 23:00

I have very sensitive skin on my upper lip & I smear Vaseline on first to act as a barrier before applying hair removal cream on top. I leave it for 10 mins before gently rubbing off with a damp face cloth. I have been doing this for 20+ years & haven't suffered any redness or burns.

MadisonMontgomery · 25/04/2015 09:53

I use Veet hair lightening cream - very sensitive skin & this is the only one that i don't react to. It does tingle a bit when on but not bad, and I do it at night then wash off with Cetaphil & whack some Vaseline on afterwards so I don't get any redness. Disagree with people who say you can spot it - maybe if you know what to look for but unless you have a major tache going on its very subtle.

oigetoffmycheese · 25/04/2015 11:39

I guess everyone is different and reacts differently but I have permanent scarring under my arms from hair remover creams (used as directed). I am so glad they are under my arms and not on my face Confused
