Help with Uniqlo sizing

I've never bought from uniqlo before and just wondering if anyone can advise on the sizing. I'm a small 12, sometimes a 10, on top, is medium likely to be huge on me?

I'd get a small, I wear an xs at size 8/10 and my get my mum who's a size 14 m tops.

IME it varies a bit. eg At the same time, a small sleeveless dress and medium jersey tops are good fits on me - body measurements very close to what most shops' size charts call a 12.

It is generally supposed to cut small but this doesn't bear out with every garment.

Depends. I'm a 12/14 and usually go for a medium, except their heattech thermal longsleeve tops, which I need a large in. Maybe worth ordering both sizes and accepting that you will need to return the wrong ones?

I think their tops sizing is quite generous considering it's a Japanese brand - maybe a European medium is bigger than a Japanese medium? My only experience of them is their tops - I can't bring myself to try and squeeze my generous arse and thighs into their skinny jeans.

What Uniqlo needs is some stores outside London. Why have about 10 shops in the capital and none elsewhere?

Surely shops in Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff etc would succeed?

AmelieinOz · 24/04/2015 10:30

Depends on what you're going to order, I agree. I'm mostly a Medium (AU12-14). I'm also a Large in the Heattech long-sleeves, but a Medium in the fleece Heattech L/s. Medium in Ultralight Down.

StellaAlpina · 24/04/2015 10:32

There used to be one in Brighton years ago before it was 'cool' but no one really shopped there and it shut. Apart from my mum who regularly makes me go buy her heattech tops in every colour.

They did expand when they first came over but had to close all the out of London stores by the mid 2000s

Seen reports from 2013 that they signed for a store in Manchester but it doesn't seem to have opened. Their trading history in several markets looks rather unsteady!

I think Uniqlo sizing is all over the place. I'm a 10 with broad shoulders and find S in tops can be a bit snug. I've just bought a down jacket in an M and that's a bit on the snug side too. Trousers on the other hand seem to come up quite big!

TheGonnagle · 24/04/2015 11:34

In uniqlo I buy a l top (34f boobs!) and xl trousers to get my thighs in! I'm a 14 on the high street in the UK.
HTH.

I always go to Uniqlo when I'm in the far east, I love it!

TheVeryThing · 24/04/2015 14:32

Thanks for all the replies, it seems sizing can vary quite a bit. I have very narrow shoulders but a bit overweight so tops can be tricky. I was planning to order the cardigan jacket and a cotton jumper (sorry, haven't figured out how to do links on my kindle).
I'm in Ireland and postage is fairly pricy so might follow the advice to buy two sizes as don't want to re-order, never actually thought of doing that Blush

Their sizing chart is pretty accurate as it is item specific. I'm between 8 and 10 and S is a good fit for jumpers but not for cardigans. XS fits too if I want a more preppy type look. I wear xs trousers and have 34.5" hips.
