Sick of red nose and cheeks - blotchy skin

HotSweetTea · 23/04/2015 15:01

I'm pretty good at covering it up with makeup, however I would like to go without makeup whenever possible, especially in the summer months.

But my skin is very red and blotchy, especially around the nose and cheek area, but also just above the brow bone.

I was off work yesterday and just caught the end of some woman on This Morning talking about a cream which is a solution to this. All I remember was that it was £85 Shock

But it got me thinking - is there a solution other than makeup?

If anyone can advise I would be very appreciative. Even if its to tell me the name of the cream on This Morning although obviously I want info on the cheaper brands

TIA Flowers

I have similar blotchiness since my last pregnancy and apparently laser treatment is the only thing that will actually shift it. Though I can't get it done til I finish breastfeeding as [hand-wavey thing about hormones].

CMOTDibbler · 23/04/2015 15:12

Have you tried using rosacea products?

possumbird · 23/04/2015 15:13

Have you asked your GP if you have roseacea?
There are some treatments for this but not all work for all people

HotSweetTea · 23/04/2015 15:19

Rosacea - that was the name of that product on This Morning I think

Would I need to get it on prescription then?

Not sure I would be up for / could afford laser treatment Confused

Soap-free cleansing bar from Avene (or a mild cleanser if you prefer) and their Epitheliale moisturiser used afterwards. You can browse the range here and buy it in larger Boots branches. Nowhere near £85.

I have the same red skin around nostrils and a little between my eyebrows and I've found the Clarisonic I got for Christmas has really helped with it, so the right kind of exfoliation is part of the solution too.

possumbird · 23/04/2015 15:30

Hotsweettea Roseacea is the name of a skin condition, the cause of whcih is unclear.

There are several treatments- oral antibiotics, topical ABs and a new gel called Mirvaso which doesn't treat the Roseacea but treats the resulting redness.

You need to see a GP to be sure that is what you have got wrong with your face

Ohanarama · 23/04/2015 15:33

I have the same problem and nothing has totally cleared it but the best products for me were Palmers Cocoa Butter Calming Formula - you can get this quite cheaply from Superdrug, Rosacea products from La Roche Possay and Metrogel on prescription.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/04/2015 15:40

I'm the same, used to have fantastic skin and now I'm a mess! I've just ordered some lily lolo blush away and foundation. Bare minerals bisque concealer is fantastic too, really a miracle product.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/04/2015 15:45

The Palmers lotion looks good, I'll try that. Thanks Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/04/2015 16:00

I do think we have all been brain washed into thinking we should all have flawless skin at all times due to photoshopping etc.

HotSweetTea · 23/04/2015 16:05

Thanks everyone

MonsterousRatbag - having a look at that link to Avene products, was going to buy online - but looks like I can't?

GRRRR

Like the sound of the Palmers cocoa butter, nice and cheap. I used to use it on my legs...isn't it a bit thick for the face?

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/04/2015 16:18

It's a specific one for the face not the thick one you use for your legs.

HotSweetTea · 23/04/2015 16:22

Ah. I see.

Wow, I'm coming across as rather a dim article on this thread apart from my radiating face Blush

HST - I get rosacea sometimes, and I take oral ABs from the doc. I've tried Metro Gel but didn't find it effective. Not everyone with rosacea will have sensitive skin (I don't) so creams and stuff don't make that much difference.

Go to your GP and see what she says.

MonstrousRatbag · 23/04/2015 18:01

HST, try boots.com and see if you can order from there.

BallroomWithNoBalls · 23/04/2015 18:23

If it's not rosacea, you might just need to wear sunscreen - I get redness very quickly in the sun, not even high summer. Redness that stays and becomes a feature of my skin, not just sunburn or heat rash. My skin is much more even and happy when I wear a daily high SPF.

Summertimemadness · 23/04/2015 18:25

I was diagnosed with rosacea and tried metrogel but it made it worse. I use neutrogena dermatological cream which I have found is the only thing that doesn't aggravate it.

I actually think I have seborrheic dermatitis not rosacea as I am convinced I have flare ups due to diet.

gonegrey56 · 23/04/2015 20:24

I wash my face with a very mild product called Cetaphil, not expensive and recommended by many top doctors . My rosacea is kept at bay by this and the minimum of products . Metrogel, a prescription gel from my GP , did nothing . I watch my diet, take fish oil supplements, keep out of the sun /wind / bitter cold , wear hats and use mineral make up as a sun barrier rather than sun block ( have not yet found one that does not make my skin react).

HotSweetTea · 24/04/2015 06:33

Thanks everyone

lots to consider.

It never occurred to me that perhaps the stuff I use might be a contributing factor. A friend of mine gave me some rose oil stuff and I use it daily. My face seems to have reddened since then. I think.

I'll stop using it and see what happens.

I will definitely be changing my skincare routine. I just need to decide which products to switch to...

What has made the biggest difference to my skin was changing to cleansing with cetaphil, moisturising with Dermalex (great but smells foul) or La Roche Posay rosaliac (I don't think it works as well, but is nicer to use) and wearing spf every day without fail. I really, really notice the difference if I don't wear a decent spf, and its not just a one day thing

HotSweetTea · 24/04/2015 08:51

I have noticed a really big difference this morning!

I ditched my usual facewash and used a clarins gentle foam wash (it was one of those sample packets in the back of the bathroom cupboard) instead. Then I ditched the rose oil, and just used my usual Garnier moisturiser for sensitive skin.

My face is no where near as red as it usually is. Its still red, mind. So I am going to spend a large part of teh day trying to figure out what new products to purchase!

Thanks ladies Flowers

Another vote here for Cetaphil, cleanser and moisturiser.
Very sooting and cheap as chips

HotSweetTea · 24/04/2015 14:24

I have made my Boots order!

Avene Soap FreeCleansing Bar 100g
Eucerin Face Sun Crème SPF50 50ml
Cetaphil Moisturising Lotion Soothes and Hydrates 236ml

Hopefully these goodies will help with my beacon face.

Thanks everyone!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/04/2015 16:28

Go careful with the Cetaphil, I'm finding it very drying.

HotSweetTea · 24/04/2015 17:10

Thanks for the heads up. I won't go overboard. I'll probably cover it over with with the spf anyway Grin
