I have bought a new pair of prescription sunglasses every year or so for the past few years, it is getting costly as the PC keeps changing.
Do any over you wear fit over sunglasses, are they ok? What would you recommend style wise?

Don't specsavers give you a free pair of prescription sunglasses if you get new glasses? That's what DH does to avoid paying for them.

Floisme · 23/04/2015 07:06

Try Raybans - they fit over my specs and I think they look pretty cool (although everyone may be secretly laughing at me).

If we had better summers I might invest in prescription sunglasses but it never seems worth it just for a few weeks. Plus I'd be forever switching between sunnies and normal glasses which seems a bit of a pain.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/04/2015 08:04

I would wear them,I was looking at them yesterday. They are the same price as spec savers px ones though and you get 2 pairs for 69 quid.

dementedpixie · 23/04/2015 08:18

my optician sells wee clip on sunglasses frames that attach to your glasses to make sunglasses

dementedpixie · 23/04/2015 08:19

If your prescriptions haven't changed too much I would just wear last year's sunglasses for another year

LtheWife · 23/04/2015 08:28

Maybe look at getting an old pair reglazed. Glasses direct charge from £25 for a reglaze, tints are normally an extra £10 but appear to be free at the moment.

readyforno2 · 23/04/2015 08:39

Have you considered contacts?
I pay for mine monthly with optical express and the give you £100 off any normal frames and 50% off sunglasses every year.
I only pay £9.99 a month which gives me 10 pairs a month. I usually build a wee supply up for summer as I barely wear them in the winter

homebythesea · 23/04/2015 11:38

Specsavers do indeed do free sunglasses.

I'm afraid I think over glasses are tragic

Can't believe you only wear sunglasses for a few weeks a year- do you not feel the need on bright winter days for example? Don't you worry about eye wrinkles from squinting?

As PP have said I wear lenses more during the summer so I can just pop on normal sunglasses (and because I get lenses from Specsavers the eye test is free and I get 50% off glasses plus the free sunglasses!). However prescription sunniest are v useful to keep in the handbag for unpredicted brightness

Your alternative is to get reactolite type lenses that darken when necessary although I don't think they go dark enough for me (my mums got them)

PerspicaciaTick · 23/04/2015 11:53

My normal glasses are quite small, so I just buy giant cheapy sunglasses and wear them over the top.
It is the easiest, cheapest and least invconvenient (in terms of popping them on and off as I go into shops etc.) solution for me and with dark lenses you can't really see my normal glasses underneath unless you look hard. It also means I have can have lots of pairs of sunglasses (in the car, the house, my handbag) without breaking the bank.

ImpatientGriselda2 · 23/04/2015 12:02

Haven't touched the clip on sunglasses since I was a nerdy preteen, and wouldn't dream of wearing standard sunglasses over prescription frames.
I'd wear non prescription sunglasses for sunbathing and reading in the garden at home, but for anything else I'd need prescription ones.

Seconding the idea of reglazing an old pair of sunglasses if the budget is tight and the prescription has changed significantly enough that the old ones aren't usable.

In the long term, it's a good idea to get a really classic frame that can take prescription lenses (like some Raybans) so a reglaze doesn't feel frumpish.

funnyossity · 23/04/2015 12:14

I just got some overglasses (Fitovers) for a trip to the mountains. They worked really well.

I think I'm just too tragically far gone to bother about style.

I did live in Australia for a while and got desensitised / used to seeing folk wearing that sort of thing!

FrugalFashionista · 23/04/2015 12:18

I went to a very chic opticians and tried some Oliver Peoples frames that I really liked - until the optician helpfully brought out the clip-on attachment.
My DH almost fell off his chair, he laughed so hard.
So trust me, it's a no

FrugalFashionista · 23/04/2015 12:22

He looks way hotter in thhem than I ever did Wink

dd's clip on ones didn't clip on at the bridge - they were spring loaded and wee tiny hooks attached round the edge of the frames. They looked good but did make the glasses a bit heavier

Well it might look a bit odd if you get close up but tragic! Grin Really?

You're right, most years it's not even for a few weeks.

Do you not feel the need on bright winter days for example?
Days like that are lovely but I doubt we have more than a couple a year. Depends where you live of course.

Don't you worry about eye wrinkles from squinting?
No.

flightywoman · 23/04/2015 18:44

I've been looking for the same thing today!

Maybe they are "tragic" but I can't wear contacts, my prescription has changed enough to need new glasses and I hated ALL the specsavers frames so ended up elsewhere that didn't do a sunglasses offer. I looked at a re-glaze for my old glasses, they were going to be £300. It's the frames that attracts the offers.

And I've tried my old wayfarers over the top but they're just a tiny bit uncomfortable and not quite right.

reup · 23/04/2015 18:52

I can't post images but If you look at Paul McGann in his clip overseas in Withnail & I tragic is not the adjective I would use.

reup · 23/04/2015 18:55

Not sure why "in" became overseas!!

I like the amazon ones. I have terrible cheap ones with a visible clip but I only used them for driving.

Orangeanddemons · 23/04/2015 19:04

I wish there was an answer to this too. I can't wear contacts, and just don't like Specsaver frames. I think I'm going to try the wearing over the top ones! I'm too blind to manage without my specs, even for sunbathing

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/04/2015 19:12

I've just bought my first pair of prescription ones for years. I usually make do with a giant pair of sunnies over my normal glasses. People would have to be looking pretty closely at me to see the pair underneath, and who cares, anyway?

Having said that, I do really like my prescription ones - but I'm having to chop and change them all the time, which is a bit of a pain. Am tempted to get some of those old lady chain things!

MrsRossPoldark · 23/04/2015 19:21

I simply cannot afford a separate pair of sunnies! My new spex (sadly I couldn't use the 'prescription hasn't changed enough yet' excuse any more) were so expensive (I did try honestly!) I asked for Transitions so my everyday spex do double duty as sunglasses. However (there's always a 'but') they don't work in the car so I have 'fit over' sunshades from Boots. They aren't expensive (£7 I think) & are pretty boring but I found some pretty nail stickers that I have used to bling them up a bit! As I only wear them in the car it doesn't matter too much. It does make you feel like you're wearing goggles as for some reason the makers assume you don't want any sun at all anywhere near your eyes!
