Elizabeth Arden 8-hour cream - or a tub of vaseline?

Anyone care to share re: EA 8-hour cream?

I have just bought some - after hearing for years that it was a miracle worker - and really can't see the difference between applying this and liberally slathering vaseline all over my face. My skin does get very, very dry and flakey but I also suffer badly with spots (best of both worlds) and am a bit worried this is going to be a pore-clogger extraordinaire...

I think it's great for problem areas but no way would I put it all over my face!

Astral cream is the best thing in my bathroom, I smother it on dry bits after the shower and on face for a night cream - and it is very cheap - about £6 for a huge pot that lasts months. Remember the state of your skin depends on what you put in your mouth - I'm no fan of Gillian Mc Keith but.....

castlesintheair · 04/11/2006 15:36

I use it on dry patches only. Especially in cold weather, though I am sure vaseline is just as good. I agree it's so thick and greasy I wouldn't put it all over, I am sure it is a major clogging agent.

mousiemousie · 04/11/2006 15:38

Its only for the lips and for tiny problem areas - I love this stuff but my mum prefers vaseline

WaitingForGodKnows · 04/11/2006 16:09

Will definitely not be smearing it all over then It does feel nice on the lips and I have dry flakey patches around my nose and under my eyes, so will try it there. I think it's going to last for aaaages at this rate.

Multitasker, if only it were that simple but the state of my skin is almost emtirely unaffected by what I put in my mouth. Its the things I can't control that are my problems.

I sometimes put a layer all over my face and sleep in it OR put a layer on and then take it off with a hot rough flannel for a really bright face I love it and the smell and the little tube feels nicer in your bag than a big tub

mousiemousie · 04/11/2006 16:13

yep, lasts for ages and a good thing as its not cheap.

I use it on chapped bits of dd's face in the winter too

pollypeachum · 04/11/2006 16:41

i used to get huge enormous painful boils on my chin but at the same time my skin was dry - flaky, red, sore, tight - basically a disaster zone. i used to wash my face in proper foaming cleanser and water then slather on moisuriser to patch up the dry patches. the best thing (well i exaggerate but its not far off) i ever did was to throw myself on the mercy of a makeup lady who advised me to use a cream cleaner for oily/combination skin. you could have knocked me down with a feather - i thought, indeed my mother had always told me and like a fool i beleived her - that i had extremely dry skin. i don't!!! it is much more stable now and i hardly use any moisturiser at all!!!
that said, am still looking for the perfect age defying cream to iron out the creases!

wheelsanddollbaby · 04/11/2006 22:33

I have put 8hr cream on my face. I cleanse and then last thing at night, put a thin film all over my face. Vaseline is good but I think the EA cream is a bit medicated and I prefer it. I bought Clarins beauty flash balm recently after hearing good things about it, but I honestly can't see a difference. What exactly is it supposed to do?

hermykne · 05/11/2006 14:48

8 hr works really well on my nails and any dry skin. vaseline doesnt have the same effect on my nails - they get hangnails and are quite weak.

mousiemousie · 06/11/2006 09:24

hermkyne what does 8hr do for nails - I have never thought of using it on mine!

Tutter · 06/11/2006 10:26

vaseline is just a barrier gel isn't it?

i use ea8hr cream when lips really bad and on elbows in winter

good value cos you use it so sparingly - i've had one for about two years now

hermykne · 06/11/2006 10:27

mine get quite dry mousie and if i put it on them every night for 3 nights its amazing the difference even in 24hrs. if i lived a non cleaning life (ha ha) then they would be fab but washing ten hundred times a day doesnt hep them.

plus i get broken cuticles as welll and it works in them,

expatinscotland · 06/11/2006 10:30

I make a non-petroleum jelly salve from beeswax, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil.

I'm not near the recipe now, but will try to post it tonight.

It's dead easy - you just melt it all down in a metal pan over a pan of boiling water.

mousiemousie · 06/11/2006 11:31

ooo thanks hermkyne - my nails are rubbish, can't wait to give it a go!

lorina · 06/11/2006 17:03

I'm not a fan. i think its very sticky and smells a bit yukky. It wont block your pores though. It is excellent quality and does work. Just not very pleasant to use .
I used mine up on my feet and it made them look wonderful

elclose · 07/11/2006 21:55

its great but dont buy it in the shops get it online for about £9.50 delivered from island cosmetics or buy cosmetics.com or direct cosmetics and dont put it too close to skin around eyes it can sting a little and cause irritation
