I don't think it is a case of women being in a bubble and needing woken up. They are often under pressure to conform, particularly if they are young and still under the control of their fathers. I went to school with many girls who weren't allowed to cut their hair, wear makeup or wear trousers, or sandals. One of my school friends went for her first ever haircut when she started university. She explained that she could only have the tiniest trim to neaten it up, but the scissor happy hairdresser, let loose on 18 years worth of hair that had never been cut, hacked inches off and cut a fringe. The girl was sick with worry. She wasn't able to visit any family or friends for months because she knew that her father would hear about her haircut. And he would physically punish her for disobeying him.
She was reliant on her father's support to continue through university, so of course she needed to toe the line, she couldn't just stand up and say 'I'm an adult now, I'll dress as i please'. It's so much more complex than that. Plus, she loved her parents, and they her, and she didn't actually want to fall out with them over something like a haircut or a pair of shoes.
