Tips on how to deal with colour on very dark hair going grey

I have very dark brown hair that I get coloured (roots) at hairdresser every four weeks or so. After two weeks the roots are really showing so am not sure what to do as colouring at hairdresser is too expensive as it is. What does everyone do at this stage?? Dye at home kits no longer seem to cover the grey. I'm 42 so def not ready to embrace the grey... Hmm

IfAtFirst same here - I'm 35, started going grey at uni at 19!

I'm also starting to go lighter using home dye, and considering highlights.

Apparently there is a name for the grey strip that never quite goes the same colour as the rest of your hair when you dye it (cos it's grey): root glow. Urgh!

Root glow happens if you have colour build up on the rest of your hair ( ie you don't just touch up the roots) or you use a lighter colour thinking it will lift the old dye out. It won't. A permanent lighter dye will struggle to lift another darker permanent because the peroxide levels aren't high enough in shop bought ones.

I'm 34 and have lots of grey! Totally white at the temples and strips in my fringe as well as them scattered through the rest. I was planning on stopping dying it but I'm at the crap stage where it just looks shit. I'm going to have it dyed a steely grey colour with some lighter bits. The grey will blend in better and I can live with dark roots if the greys not as visable.

Another one who has gone lighter from natural dark- Im now 48 with warm brown and random highlights, all done by myself though I wont go near a hairdressers! I get the poly colour box,1.99 only- every 4-5 weeks and put on my roots only, dont put it on the rest of my hair now and again I mix up a lightening powder and apply a few random highlights - not near the roots tho- and this seems to work for me!
I also cut my own hair(have done for many years, so have learnt all the misakes and now Im quite good at it!)

Sorry sunbeam, just see your question now. I leave it on 12-15 mins, they recommend 10mins on the box. When my hair was longer I used 2 boxes, now hair short 1 box does the job

Thanks Skyler. Right, I'm going to try leaving a bought colour kit on for a it more than the box says and see if this works first...
