DIY Deva Cut?

CapnMurica · 17/04/2015 21:56

Has anyone done this? My hair is desperate for a cut (have ravaged the ends by accidentally putting my hair tongs on too hot) but there is NOWHERE that will do it. Unless I go to London. Where I do not live. And can't afford anyway.

I have been watching millions of YouTube videos and it looks kind of easy...but naturally I want the Mumsnet approval Grin.

I will buy or order the scissors tomorrow I think.

What's a Deva cut?

I'm in desperate need of a haircut myself!

CapnMurica · 17/04/2015 23:08

It's a cut for curls lucysmam. You basically dry cut it, each individual curl at a time.

I've had a tricky time googling it though as it seems to be mainly for afro hair which my hair isn't.

It looks good on the YouTube videos
Do you how they get their curls to look so good apart from the cut?
I would love to try this

lucysmam · 18/04/2015 10:04

Ah, I don't have curls! Never mind.

I do have a very curly 5yo who hates having her hair cut though so will have a look at it. thanks Smile

I do what is essentially a Deva cut on my DDs' hair. They are mixed race so biggish ringlets and a lot of them.

I take the bulk off with normal hair cutting scissors, then soften each curl with thinning scissors. I would definitely definitely suggest using thinning scissors; it's virtually impossible to stuff up with them, anything you do will blend in!

ZaraW · 18/04/2015 10:45

I have curly hair and got a deva cut last year. I would trim it myself after having a cut but I'm not sure I would be brave enough to restyle my hair. Personally I wouldn't use thinning scissors on my hair. Someone posted a You Tube clip a few months ago which was really good, I've trimmed the front part of my hair after watching it.

CapnMurica · 18/04/2015 11:31

Zara where did you get your hair done?

I'm going into town in a bit, will buy some scissors. It's a lovely sunny day so I'll be able to see what's going on!

I'm so tempted to try it. But how can you do the back?

I assume you know about Matt James and also Treat Me Suite in Birmingham? Don't know if that is better for you than London, or worse.
Have you looked on the British Curlies forum? There are lots of hairdressers recommended there. Sadly, none near me.

I'm thinking of putting out a wanted sign on my local FB pages for a hairdresser who would be prepared to read the Curly Girl manual, then cut my hair accordingly.

ZaraW · 18/04/2015 13:32

CapnMurica I went to see Matt James, he's fantastic and really loves what he does. He's based in Birmingham a couple of minutes walk from New Street Station. He transformed my hair. My regular hairdresser gives me a trim but I will back to see him later this year as I want a restyle getting bored of my long curly hair I will probably go for a shoulder length bob.

The Curly Girl book also shows you how to trim your hair.

I did it!

Went into town this morning, there is a new shop opened that specialises in ethnic beauty products and wigs. I got some scissors, spray oil, cowash and some waxy stuff.

Cut my hair this afternoon. Took a while and I'm sure it would look raggedy as hell if I wore it straight, but curly it just looks nice now. It has a shape, the ends are straight and scraggy. I bought some moisturising lotion for hair which is really nice on, my hair feels lovely.

So, all in all, a successful day!

And I might see if I can get to Birmingham for a proper cut in the next few months. Thanks for the tip - I didn't know at all!

There was a woman recommended to me as good at cutting curl hair because she has curly hair - I went to her for a restyle. I had a picture (incidentally, was a pic of someone from britishcurlies!) and she said the the curls weren't natural Confused. She did a nice cut.....but it was the same as any other cut I've had. And she used cones Angry.

Oh well. At least I know now I can do it myself!

Well done. it looks good! Might try it myself.

chocnwine · 19/04/2015 10:24

I cut my hair Deva style. I have 3c curls ans went from an all around boring shoulder lengs cut to a a shorter layered cut with fringe. looks brilliant. I get lots of comments. and washing esp drying is sooo much quicker.

CapnMurica · 19/04/2015 10:45

Go for it DontForget.

There was one bit that the second I cut it, I knew I'd done it too short. But the beauty of curls I suppose is that one little mistake like that is not noticeable at all.

Chocnwine - you can't tell from that first cut but it actually had layers but into it! My hair grows a lot faster in the top layers, when it starts getting triangular I know it needs cutting.

I thought it would take hours as well but it didn't, less than an hour for sure (minus the time buying scissors and washing hair of course)

I find now once I have the cut it is easier to maintain and just snip little bits off if it grow too long on certain places. I also use non-poo shampoo and conditionor without silicone and my hair has really been transformed :)

CapnMurica · 19/04/2015 20:12

chocnwine - you know what has annoyed me the most? I've spent the last 6 years (since my twins were born) basically getting my hair into the best condition it has ever been. I don't use sulfates or silicones, I also only use conditioner to wash. I use a diffuser to dry.

Then I get some admittedly great tongs, and burn the fuck out of my hair in one go! I suppose I was lucky it didn't burn bits off though!

Trills · 19/04/2015 20:22

If I did that, and then washed my hair, my hair would go into different curls than it had at the time of washing.

Trills · 19/04/2015 20:25

*at the time of cutting I mean

CapnMurica · 20/04/2015 19:59

I washed it this morning and it looked even better! Less frizzy and fluffy than just after.
