This is almost certainly under the wrong category but I'm hoping someone can advise me if you know of a good way to clean your wedding/engagement rings yourself? I called 3 jewellers today and they each charged about £40 per ring!! Replating is on my to do list...

I have a pot of "gold jewellery cleaner" from John Lewis that you immerse rings etc in, it comes with a little brush so you can get bits of grot out from behind stones and settings. You can't use it on pearls or emeralds I think. When I can't be arsed to get it out of the cupboard I hold rings under the tap and have a scrub with an old toothbrush.

In Hatton Garden they boil up bits of gold jewellery in soapy water which breaks down all the manky ingrained bits. Gold is pretty tough.

Are you going abroad this year? I always have mine cleaned abroad, never been charged in Europe :)

I had a Saturday job in a jewellers and we used to just dip rings in a cleaner like pp mentioned. Can't remember the brand name off the top of my head

Soft Toothbrush and fairy liquid, rinse then dunk in vodka works brilliantly for rings with stones in, especially diamonds but not sure if you just mean cleaning the gold bit?

I use one of those battery operated ultrasonic cleaners with Stardrops (which was recommended by a MNetter jeweller)

Itsalldramarama · 16/04/2015 20:53

Was just going to say the ultra sonic ! I bought one to clean my vaping gear but got a links of London braclet covered in bleach and went brassy .. Came up a treat :) also usin liquid and a tooth brush works fab on rings

Allie82 · 16/04/2015 20:56

Pickledlilly yes sorry I mean the stone aswell, it seems to go a bit dull where I guess hand lotion and stuff builds up but I don't want to be forever taking my rings on and off

Fairy liquid and soft toothbrush

bonzo77 · 16/04/2015 21:07

What are they made of? Mine are platinum and diamond and come up beautifully with an electric tooth brush and toothpaste. Anything else this is too harsh for: use liquid soap / fairy liquid / shampoo instead. And FGS put the plug in the sink first!!!

IAmcuriousyellow · 16/04/2015 21:14

Ha yes, plug in sink!

Allie82 · 16/04/2015 21:14

Bonzo77 ha! Yes I'm bound to drop them down the plug hole! They are white gold. Need replating really just can't afford it at the moment.
Thanks everyone for all the tips!
